Rose","doi":"10.1109/TDCLLM.1998.668333","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/TDCLLM.1998.668333","url":null,"abstract":"This paper describes the analytical studies and seven full-scale foundation load tests that were conducted to study the behavior and improve the analysis and design of laterally loaded drilled shaft overhead power line foundations partially or totally socketed in rock. Finite element analyses were conducted to develop new theoretical pressure versus displacement (p-y) relationships for the four-spring subgrade modulus MFAD model. The results of the drilled shaft tests are discussed and compared to the behavior predicted by MFAD. The Rock Mass Rating (RMR) system was used to evaluate the strength and deformation parameters of the rock strata. (KEPCO) has actively strived for development of a semi automatic hot-line work robot system, called Phase II. At this point, to expand automated tasks performed by the robot, we have developed a two-point laser measuring method based on measurements of the work object's position and orientation. Additionally, a simplified robot language exclusively for Phase II was developed. We have also produced a training system for robot operators. Incorporating these functions in the existing Phase II made for remarkable work efficiency with the robot. With these developments, the robot system's efficiency in terms of operation has been entirely achieved. The CASE investigation focused on the effects of a triggering event on a transmission line's integrity rather than the cause for the initial failure. The accurate modeling of the system components as well as lines, transformers, machines, loads, shunt reactors and surge arresters is presented by taking into account the saturation of transformers and shunt reactors and corona V-I characteristics. The excitation systems of machines are also used in this study. Several events that can produce high TOV levels such as three-phase load rejections and single-phase opening with contingency are examined by using the EMTP. The energy dissipated in the surge arresters is determined. Finally, the methods of limiting the magnitude and duration of TOV levels applied to equipment are presented. A program capable of interfacing with the EMTP is developed to study TOVs and other transient phenomena. Studies indicate that economic growth, as measured by gross domestic product (GDP), is directly related to consumption of electric energy. Overhead transmission lines (OHTL) play one of the most important roles in the operation of a reliable delivery system. At the same time, because of their length and bold exposure to the elements, OHTLs are vulnerable to catastrophic failure from a variety of initiating events. Unfortunately, there isn't a test book or published procedure readily available that deals specifically with the problem of determining the economic risk to a particular electric system due to the loss of a specific OHTL. The principles required to do such an analysis, however, are known and in wide use in other applications such as insurance. The device provides improved limitation of overvoltages at the worksite in comparison with the traditional portable protective gap that has been in use for several decades. The new device consist of a rod air gap connected in series with a highly nonlinear ZnO resistor. The sparkover voltage of the device is 1.5 to 1.7 times the peak phase-to-earth maximum nominal system voltage. The superior performance of fired wedge-connectors is pointed out. Significant savings have been documented in field investigation efforts, data collection, design time, line outages and construction costs. Advancements in software and data collection instruments have been combined with innovative line engineering to improve the accuracy and reduce the costs of uprating projects.
