Wollam","doi":"10.2307/1347823","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2307/1347823","url":null,"abstract":"similar to a description of clothing and, indeed, the two may be paired to indicate a person's character or mood. The concluding chapter focuses on the multiple transformations in the Conde Olinos, in which the young lovers' souls change into embracing plants, then into birds, a healing spring and finally a shrine. In some versions the last stage predominates, in an obvious attempt to emphasize the Christian motif, while giving rational explanations to the supernatural elements. A minor point that may be noted is the bizarre use, for English, of the misleading and long discredited term \"Indo-Germanic\" (p. 136) in place of Indo-European. In addition, it would have been a welcome service to provide, whenever possible, the original versions of ballads from less common languages, which appear in the text only in translation. Finally, a more substantial introduction than the useful but sketchy five pages offered would have been helpful to tie together the six images discussed. In particular, one sorely misses a preliminary theoretical statement stating precisely how the author interprets the terms image and imagery, symbol, motif, and theme, which sometimes appear to be used virtually interchangeably. The dust jacket promises that this book will make \"available important new critical tools sure to have significant results for ballad scholarship.\" This may be its most serious long-term aim, for which it is certain to be of great value, but it also offers the scholar and advanced student alike new, richer interpretations of many well-known ballads and it does so in a most lively, readable style.","PeriodicalId":326714,"journal":{"name":"Rocky Mountain Review of Language and Literature","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121216852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Gallagher","doi":"10.2307/1347425","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.2307/1347425","url":null,"abstract":"This book is comprised of six lectures delivered at the University of Cincinnati during the spring of 1976, as well as a prologue and epilogue by the editor. Included are texts by literary critic Leslie Fiedler; sociologist Herbert Gans; art scholar Alan Gowans; John Kouwenhoven, author of Made in America; The Arts In Modern American Civilization; Constance Perin, social anthropologist and city planner; and philosopher Willis Truitt. As might be expected, the material covered is diverse, ranging from SAT scores and Marxism to shopping centers and fast food eateries, yet fundamentally all of the texts address the same dilemma: The standards by which we differentiate between art and craft, between any art form and its popular counterpart, are ultimately elitist standards, and as such are at odds with the spirit of a democratic society. But by what standards then, if any, should art be judged? And what role should it play in a society such as ours? Much of the material here is thought-provoking, but too often it is difficult to get through. These texts were originally meant to be delivered aloud. Gowan's detailed comparison of architectural styles, for instance, must have played nicely as a slide presentation, but hunting photos, flipping back then forth, makes it tiresome in a book. Professor Kouwenhoven's \"Art, Disorder and American Experience,\" was delivered with wit and charm, I'm sure. On the page, however, it just seems coy. The central difficulty with Mann's collection of lectures is that they remain too much that; a collection of lectures.","PeriodicalId":326714,"journal":{"name":"Rocky Mountain Review of Language and Literature","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127342215","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Of course, they were providing for Guerin's livelihood as well, and there was some mildly interesting irony in that, he thought. In their travelling, these drivers were contributing toward his own voyage, though his would be a trip to transcend the earthbound scurrying at his feet. He had balloons on his mind, clean air, free floating on the natural wind. After all, if not to save for such a trip, why else be doing what he was presently doing, and for such a boss as he had ? It was a normal Southern California summer morning, the sun already white hot on his back, the air dry but thick with a chemical haze that obscured even the enormous humps of the dirigible hangars where his eyes lingered momentarily. Not more than a mile away, he realized, as he traced the dim outlines rising incongruously from the vast vegetable fields to the south. He had never seen the great cigarshaped craft themselves, but he knew they were waiting there, as eager as he to set sail. Well, it might be that his own voyage could serve to set them free, he thought. And meantime, it was fortune enough that such ships could find a home at all these days, drydock or no. Married at age thirteen and widowed at fifteen, this strongminded woman entered a Franciscan convent in Pisa in order to avoid another marriage arranged by her family (121-22). Later, as prioress of her religious community, she supervised the building of dormitories, churches and convents, which were later decorated by artists. Even though the exact relationship between the artists and the nuns is not known because of lack of documentation, \"certEiinly the nuns and the prioress determined the subject\" ( 130), thus influencing the lives of secular and religious men and women Qf their times by the themes depicted in the paintings. Suor Maria Clemente Ruoti is lauded as a writer. Supported by the wealth and partial freedom of convent culture, she wrote plays to be performed in front of a limited audience of nuns and female relatives, which allowed her to act as \"spokesperson to the world for her convent sisters and her sex\" (290). Among the other women considered in the collection, we can number Clare of Assisi, Angela of Foligno, Maria Maddalena de' Pazzi, Maria Domitilla Galluzzi, Lucrezia Orsina Vizzana, and others who are often forgotten notwithstanding their contribution to culture and society. This collection fills the void in recognizing some less known women as primary contributors in their times, such as Giovanna D'Aragona, Isabella della Rovere and the Marchesa della Tolfa, who participated actively in financing a number of religious projects, especially in connection with the Jesuit Order. Up to now they have not been fully credited for the accomplishments of their patronage. The book is accompanied by a precise bibliography, detailed notes after each essay, and many fine illustrations. Some of the concepts presented in the essays might become tedious because of repetition, but their reoccurrence shows consensus of critical voices. This collection must be greeted as an important and valuable addition to women's studies.","PeriodicalId":326714,"journal":{"name":"Rocky Mountain Review of Language and Literature","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125874788","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These comic, perverse figures who come to dominate Jefferson, Mississippi, in the Snopes trilogy stand out among Faulkner's more familiar characters, the introspective intellectuals or brooding misfits and the good-natured, naive country people whom we are used to finding in his stories. We usually see them, moreover, through the distinct narrative distance of Gavin Stevens' or V. K. Ratliff's interpreting consciousness, and as a consequence, even the more fully depicted Snopeses remain alien and somehow one-dimensional. Both the narrative modes through which we encounter them and the bizarre circumstances characterizing so many of the episodes in which Snopeses appear have led to critical confusion and to a paucity of commentary that successfully ties the Snopeses to Faulkner's larger fictional concerns.","PeriodicalId":326714,"journal":{"name":"Rocky Mountain Review of Language and Literature","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-01-06","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126100967","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
