Two other systems introduced are cockpit display of traffic information (CDTI) and traffic advisory and collision avoidance system (TCAS). All these systems will use navigational signals emitted by the Global Positioning System (GPS) constellation of satellites. A conventional DSP system clocked at 50 MHz would require approximately 200 DSPs to have the same performance as our FVIP system. We have estimated the size and power consumption of our FVIP system to be 3 dm/sup 3/ and 200 W. With these MPD studies together with previous LPD studies we are confident that a \"VIP-type\" architecture can handle all typical pulse Doppler radar waveforms currently used in airborne radar.","PeriodicalId":326587,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings International Radar Conference","volume":"649 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116420493","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper discusses some methods for the detection and resolution of range and radial speed in a radar with a burst oriented waveform, featuring PRF and RF changes from burst to burst. Two methods of detection are compared: (1) initial detection on a burst by burst basis and subsequent combination of the detections obtained from each burst; and (2) first unfolding the Doppler-processed video in both range and radial speed, summation of the corresponding received normalised powers and finally detection of the summed results. The results of both methods are compared, showing that the processing gain of the second method is significantly above the first method. An important aspect of these methods of detection is the power to resolve ambiguities. Without particular measures, the number of so-called ghost detections, i.e. detections at incorrectly resolved position and speed, may be significant. Two procedures to reduce the ghost rate are illustrated for a three burst scenario. The results indicate that the ghost rate may be reduced to low levels at the expense of a part of the processing gain.","PeriodicalId":326587,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings International Radar Conference","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121567795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such a system could steer one or more high power beams for search or tracking radars, and the system could possess wide instantaneous bandwidth. Experiments have demonstrated that a planar plasma mirror can be formed with electron densities high enough to reflect X-band microwaves. Estimates of microwave beam power handling capabilities of such a plasma Sheet exceed 3 kW/cm/sup 2/ for microsecond duration pulses at kilohertz repetition rates. The plasma minor is formed by driving a glow discharge between a hollow cathode and a flat plate anode which are immersed in an axial magnetic field of 150-300 Gauss. The plasma sheet could in principle be steered in one plane using the magnetic field, and in another by designation of the cathode. A 50 cm wide, 1 cm thick, 60 cm long plasma sheet is formed between the cathode and the anode 10 /spl mu/s after the voltage is applied. The discharge also extinguishes within 10 /spl mu/s of the voltage being turned off. For a 4 kV voltage pulse, plasma densities /spl les/10/sup 13/ cm/sup -3/ are achieved within the plasma sheet. The discharge gas is air at 130 mTorr. Single mirrors have been formed with pulse widths of 20-1000 /spl mu/s, and burst mode operation at 10 kHz has been achieved with 30-70 /spl mu/s long pulses. Measurements of the phase using a heterodyned microwave interferometer show that the critical surface is stationary during most of the pulse. A 30 cm diameter Cutler-feed antenna is being used to illuminate the mirror at 10 GHz. The H-plane radiation pattern (for a 90/spl deg/ reflection) measured 4.3 m from the plasma mirror, is very similar to that obtained from a metal mirror of comparable dimensions.","PeriodicalId":326587,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings International Radar Conference","volume":"11 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122206488","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This Doppler spread effect can be overcome by use of adaptive space-time clutter filters which implicitly compensate for the radar platform motion. To apply space-time processing a multi-channel antenna is required (spatial dimension of the space-time filter). In the existing literature on airborne MTI only the sidelooking case is considered. We focus on a forward looking antenna configuration. While sidelooking MTI is based on the DPCA property (physical motion compensation) this is not true for the forward looking antenna. Numerical calculations have shown that near-optimum clutter rejection can be achieved even for forward looking radar. Some basic considerations are made to explain the underlying principles of forward looking MTI. Optimum and suboptimum adaptive receiver structures are compared. An overall comparison of sidelooking and forward looking MTI is presented. It turns out that in general the forward looking configuration is more sensitive to interfering effects, such as system bandwidth, range ambiguities and jamming.","PeriodicalId":326587,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings International Radar Conference","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117305001","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Research results have demonstrated a reliable computer modeling technique for predicting the BSE of electrically large radar-radome systems. This technique, based on a ray-trace receive formulation using geometric optics (GO), was extended to investigate the dependance of radome-induced BSE on various combinations of aperture scan angle, element polarization, and incident wave polarization. The results obtained compare very well with available empirical, published, and measured data for the specific scan angles and polarization cases considered. Generally, the BSE exhibits less dependance on incident wave polarization when the aperture elements are linearly polarized and a higher degree of sensitivity when aperture elements are circularly polarized.","PeriodicalId":326587,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings International Radar Conference","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121037357","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The introduction of the AN/MPS-39 multiple object tracking radar (MOTR) at these launch facilities has expanded the tracking and mission characterization capabilities at these facilities. MOTR is a phased array instrumentation radar that can simultaneously track up to ten objects within a 60 degree cone. A new Doppler processing algorithm, called the Doppler domain localized generalized likelihood ratio detector, is considered, and its performance compared to the approaches currently in use for weak target detection in severe clutter. It is shown that a significant performance improvement can be achieved by augmenting the existing Doppler and constant false alarm rate signal processors with this new approach.","PeriodicalId":326587,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings International Radar Conference","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1995-05-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121122354","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
