In this article, we suggest to use Quality of Life (QOL) to investigate the characteristics of game play and to evaluate games. We measured emotional changes caused by game play using a QOL questionnaire specialized in the detection of the mental change (POMS-Brief Form) in Interrupted Time-Series Design. As a result, the analysis of variance showed that in certain cases some negative feelings such as uneasiness and anger are reduced significantly by game play, and such effect is strengthened by repeatedly playing a personal favorite. Furthermore, it was indicated that an appreciative evaluation of the game correlates with a positive effect. Therefore it became clear that there is a need to consider the test participant's subjective evaluation of the game during the experiment. Additionally, the feelings affected were clearly different in each of the 16 titles analyzed. Therefore, a new classification of games from the viewpoint of the POMS change in QOL is possible.","PeriodicalId":326485,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Conference on Virtual Environments, Human-Computer Interfaces and Measurement Systems","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116704539","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More recently the 3D sensor based gaming has spread rapidly in the PC and console gaming and gamers' communities. The sensor based gaming has changed dramatically the gaming design forcing it to move away from triggered scripts to more interactive reactions. This requires that games are designed such that they can adapt faster to the gamer reactions and behavior forcing the characters to react in an intelligent way by analyzing a variety of options and moves made by the user in the real space. The advent of 3D cameras and of the augmented virtual reality insertions into the game space via external sensors detecting users' moves and not buttons or keys pressed requires considering a new way of building a computer game. There is a stringent need to produce more and more intelligent engines to drive the game. In this paper we introduce and discus a series of aspects of game building when a 3D camera and movement sensors are used. The AI engine composition is discussed and shown that it has at its basis the opponent model which helps the engine learn from the data acquired. An evaluation function is also necessary. This evaluation function is built and tested on real data. The AI engine is also investigated in relation to a special language based on body or body parts movements.","PeriodicalId":326485,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Conference on Virtual Environments, Human-Computer Interfaces and Measurement Systems","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115692617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Virtual Reality technology gives a great support to this kind of surgical procedures through medical image processing and visualization, 3D organ's reconstruction and intra-operative surgical guidance. In this paper is presented an advanced visualization and navigation system and the surgeon has the possibility to visualize both the traditional patient information, as the CT image set, and a 3D model of the patient's anatomy built from this. Two different visualization modalities are available in real time and dynamically. According to the surgeon needs, it is possible to obtain the automatic reslicing of the orthogonal planes in order to have an accurate visualization of the 3D model and slices exactly next to the actual position of the surgical instrument tip. In addition, it is possible to activate the clipping modality that allows cutting the 3D model in correspondence of a chosen visualization plane. The system can be used as support for the diagnosis, for the surgical preoperative planning and also for an image-guided surgery.","PeriodicalId":326485,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Conference on Virtual Environments, Human-Computer Interfaces and Measurement Systems","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131427727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Especially for real-time modeling the former estimation of the camera trajectory is an elementary step towards the generation of three dimensional scene models. This paper presents a framework for simultaneous recovery of scene structure and camera motion by combining visual and inertial cues. For this purpose two different system designs are proposed: a loosely-coupled system and a monolithic design, which adapts ideas from non-linear state estimation as extended Kalman filtering (EKF) for structure and motion recovery.","PeriodicalId":326485,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Conference on Virtual Environments, Human-Computer Interfaces and Measurement Systems","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124279611","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The rapid rise and development of brain-computer interface (BCI) technology makes the thought-control of EAS possible. This paper designed a new BCI-controls-EAS (BCICEAS) system by using event related desynchronization (ERD) of EEG signal evoked by imaginary movement. The Fisher parameters were extracted from feature frequency bands of EEG and classified into EAS control commands by Mahalanobis Classifier. A feedback training technique was introduced to enhance the signal feature through a visual feedback interface with a virtual liquid column, which height varied along with EEG power spectral feature. Experimental results demonstrated the validity of the proposed method, including the effective improvement of feedback training on signal feature and reliable control of EAS. It is hoped the BCICEAS can explore a new way for EAS system design and help people who sufferers with severe movement dysfunction.","PeriodicalId":326485,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Conference on Virtual Environments, Human-Computer Interfaces and Measurement Systems","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121186681","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Distributed systems based on smart sensors represent the best solution to many different measurement problems, even if smart sensors provided from different factory are not always compatibility. In fact, the adoption of different communication protocol and the closed management software force the developer to create distributed systems using only smart sensors provided by the same factory. So, it is important to create distributed system accessible using a standard technology. In this paper the authors present an implementation of a Plug-n-Play wireless sensor network based on Web service and adopting open source software and low cost hardware architecture. The sensor network is presented a framework of hierarchical distributed system for metrological application of monitoring. Measurement results are made available as Web services so that all users can build up their own application and access to the sensor present in the network. The particular metrological application chosen to show some preliminary results of distributed monitoring network is the monitoring of climatic parameters. This solution offers great possibility in terms of fast and easy access to measured data, of integration of large complex Web sensor network, of realization of flexible custom applications and of service reusability developing new measurement application starting with different information also coming from different sensors. A proper synchronization protocol has been adopted in order to synchronize to different hardware sections of the sensor performing measurement.","PeriodicalId":326485,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Conference on Virtual Environments, Human-Computer Interfaces and Measurement Systems","volume":"116 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116214013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

New forms of novel Human Computer Interaction (HCI) paradigms are required to be developed for supporting how we currently engage with the collected sensor information. In this paper we introduce Sensor Information Interactive System (SIIS) that presents sensor information collected from a smart object with a multi-touch interface. This system aims to exploit the interaction capabilities of multi-touch technologies by supporting more efficient activities and presentation with digital sensor information, making it more accessible and meaningful. The SIIS system is validated with both 2-D and 3-D applications to demonstrate the effectiveness and flexibility of multi-touch interactions and usability of the multi-touch interface for engaging with real-time sensor information.","PeriodicalId":326485,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE International Conference on Virtual Environments, Human-Computer Interfaces and Measurement Systems","volume":"51 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-10-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121672468","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
