{"title":"Social wasps (Hymenoptera: Vespidae) associated with Eucalyptus sp. plantations from an Altitude Field in Southern Minas Gerais State, Brazil","authors":"Taiguara Pereira de Gouvêa, Marcos Magalhães de Souza, Mireile Reis dos Santos","doi":"10.35249/rche.49.2.23.05","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.35249/rche.49.2.23.05","url":null,"abstract":"In Brazil, there is little information about social wasp communities in Altitude Fields (Campos de Altitude), a phytophysiognomy of the Atlantic Forest with a high rate of endemism, which is being altered and reduced in area by human activities, such as the cultivation of Eucalyptus spp. Therefore, the present study aimed to inventory the species of Polistinae (Vespidae) presente in an Altitude Field associated with Eucalyptus sp. plantations in the municipality of Poços de Caldas, Southern Minas Gerais, Brazil. The study was conducted in Morro do Ferro, central region of the Poços de Caldas Plateau, from 2020 to 2021, using active search and Malaise traps. Thirteen species of social wasps were recorded, which have a wide geographic distribution, and explore anthropic environments, such as agricultural areas, pasture and Eucalyptus sp. plantations. Many of them behave as synanthropic, suggesting this altitude field to be a degraded area in Poços Caldas, MG. Phenotypic (external morphology) and molecular studies were performed to contribute to the taxonomy and phylogeny of triatomines, since few studies on the internal morphology of these were found. In order to contribute to the biological, morphological and taxonomic knowledge of the subfamily Triatominae, this work describes the internal morphology of the reproductive apparatus of adult males and females of T. melanocephala. For this work 30 specimens from Jequié, Bahia, Brazil were used. Triatoma melanocephala’s reproductive system included slim spermathecae insertions, large/medium rounded terminal bodies, and irregular ellipsoid-shaped testicles with a transparent, vitreous appearance. This work aims to report a new occurrence of T. jatai in the state of Ceará and update its geographic distribution in the country by means of a map. In August 2022, during sampling in Dr. José Maria Soares Barata private collection, a female specimen of T. jatai was found. This specimen was collected in 1998 at a wild environment in the locality of Coqueiro, municipality of Salitre, Ceará. The identification was based on the original description of T. jatai. The specimen was donated and deposited in the collection of the Faculdade de Ciências Farmacêuticas, Unesp, Araraquara, São Paulo, Brazil. This study reports the first case of predation of the scorpion Physoctonus debilis by the assassin bug Microtomus tibialis in a Brazilian Seasonal Dry Tropical Forest biome. During a nocturnal collection, an adult individual of M. tibialis was observed, with the head and body facing downwards, while holding a female of P. debilis, with the aid of the mouthparts under the vegetation. Se utilizaron cinco tipos de alimentos conformados por insectos vivos y cuatro frecuencias alimenticias diferentes. El monitoreo de sus poblaciones en zonas urbanas mediante ovitrampas ha permitido actualizar la distribución y el conocimiento de la riqueza de especies. Este estudio reporta las especies recolectadas con ovitrampas en Jalpan de Serra, Querétaro, México, localidad adyacente a la Reserva “Sierra Gorda”. Se colectaron 5.580 papeletas de oviposición colocadas aleatoriamente en aéreas peridomiciliares. En laboratorio los huevos eclosionaron y las larvas fueron criadas hasta estado adulto. Un total de 5.956 adultos de cinco géneros fueron determinados taxonómicamente. De manera oficial se reporta la presencia de Haemagogus equinus en el estado de Querétaro. Esta especie es reconocida como vector de fiebre amarilla, con importancia médica y veterinaria debido a ciclos urbanos y selváticos. Adicionalmente, se reporta a Aedes aegypti, Ae. albopictus, Ae. epactas y Ae. podographicus, las dos primeras con relevancia en salud pública.
