{"title":"Self-fashioning and othering: Women’s double strategies of travel writing","authors":"B. Boter, Irene Villaescusa Illán","doi":"10.14198/2020.36.04","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.14198/2020.36.04","url":null,"abstract":"This essay examines early 20th century travel texts written by two European women: the Catalan journalist Aurora Bertrana (1899-1974) who lived in French Polynesia from 1926 until 1929, and her contemporary, the Dutch journalist Mary Pos (1904-1987), who travelled to the Dutch East Indies in the fall of 1938 and returned early in 1939. Our research is double-focused: on the one hand it examines issues of empire, colonisation, and orientalism, and on the other hand it explores issues of modernity and feminism. The travel texts under study offer personal registrations of self-fashioning strategies that both authors employ, which significantly question gender expectations regarding women’s social and sexual practices, their professional, familial and marital roles, and their opportunities for education. Explora criticamente la literatura existente sobre el trabajo flexible para examinar el enfoque de politicas del Reino Unido a traves de una lente de genero y adoptando el marco de Bacchi «?Como se representa el problema?». A partir del marco teorico, se identifican y exploran tres temas para problematizar los supuestos y silencios que estan profundamente arraigados y sostienen la politica: a saber, el predominio de la logica de los negocios; la subestructura de genero de las organizaciones; y la brecha entre la politica «en papel» y la politica «en la practica». A traves de la lente de Bacchi, el articulo destaca que los «problemas» que yacen debajo de la legislacion sobre el derecho a solicitar trabajo flexible del Reino Unido y las politicas de trabajo flexible de las organizaciones no son fijos ni estaticos, cambian discursivamente a traves del «tiempo», y que las politicas de trabajo flexibles deben estar situadas analiticamente dentro de sus contextos sociales y economicos. EnglishThis article focuses on organisations’ flexible working policies and the UK’s Right to Request Flexible Working legislation first introduced in 2002 and progressively extended in 2009 and 2014. It critically explores the existing literature around flexible working to examine the UK’s policy approach through a gendered lens and by adopting Bacchi’s framework «What’s the problem represented to be». Three themes from the literature are identified and explored to problematise the deep-seated assumptions and silences underpinning policy: namely, the dominance of the business case rationale; the gendered substructure of organisations; and the disjuncture between policy «on paper» and policy «in practice». {"title":"Gender mainstreaming in action? The Scottish Structural and Investment Funding Program 2014-2020","authors":"L. A key feature of the EUs approach to gender equality was the development and promotion of Gender Mainstreaming (GM) as an innovative approach to achieving gender equality. GM has been used as an approach to integrate gender into programme formulation, design, implementation, monitoring and evaluation across the EU policy programmes, including the European Structural and Investment Funds (ESIF), which plays a key role for both the inclusion and promotion of the contributions of women in economic development. GM is a well-researched gender equality strategy, however there is little consensus on its effectiveness and its ability to transform the policy paradigm and attempts to operationalise GM have been limited. Despite a large body of academic literature, there is limited recent research which links GM and the ESIF, specifically at a local level. Therefore, this article aims to do that by considering whether GM as part of regional development policy can be utilised as a tool for delivering transformative changes. Scotland’s approach to GM within the ESIF is analysed utilising process tracing and semi-structured interviews with ESIF stakeholders in Scotland. Here I am interested in the images, or lack thereof, fashioning the mulatto body and what was their intention behind such signifiers. I use the interpretative keys to intersectional feminism and an interdisciplinary methodology applied to the study of this sexualizing and racializing representations of bodies. I suggest that the mulatto woman is a discursive construct of otherness (re)signifying the objectification of the black body. It analyzes the senses of feminism that emerge from the volume dedicated to women published by Victoria Ocampo in Sur. The general objective of this is to demonstrate Ocampo’s progressivism by intervening with feminist demands that were barely seen in the country. Then, the reconstruction that Ocampo and other militants make of the history of Argentine feminism will be analyzed first. Second, the different feminist perspectives that interweave in the volume will be analyzed. Sin embargo, actualmente se mantienen unos evidentes desequilibrios y sesgos de genero que discriminan a las mujeres, asi como un notable deficit de la integracion del analisis de sexo/genero en la investigacion. EnglishSince the adoption of the Constitution in 1978, various measures and actions have been taken to achieve equality between women and men in the Spanish research framework, incorporating gender equality and the gender perspective in the Law of Science, Technology and Innovation (2011), in the Spanish Strategy for Science and Technology and Innovation (2013-2020), as well as in the National R&D&I Plans. However, there are currently evident gender imbalances and biases that discriminate against women, as well as a notable deficit in the integration of sex/gender analysis in research.
