The present study aims to investigate the degree of awareness and comprehension of climate change impacts among marine officers. Specifically, the research focuses on exploring the potential association between the marine officers' ranks and their knowledge of climate change issues. The study utilises a quantitative analytical approach, employing questionnaires as the primary means of data collection and the Chi-Square test for statistical analysis. The findings of the research indicate a noteworthy correlation between the hierarchical positions of the marine respondents and their perspectives on the phenomenon of climate change. The study reveals a deficiency in the knowledge of some marine officers, specifically regarding the role of the shipping industry in generating greenhouse gas emissions and the relevant international policies related to climate change. The results emphasise the significance of incorporating educational approaches in maritime institutions and universities, with a focus on curricula related to climate change. The incorporation of this element can furnish forthcoming mariners with a thorough comprehension of the origins, effects, and measures to alleviate climate change. Moreover, enhancing knowledge and understanding of climate-related policies and agreements may facilitate individuals' ability to make meaningful contributions to the promotion of environmental sustainability. The International Maritime Organisation (IMO) has acknowledged the significance of climate change as a critical concern. However, our research indicates that there is a requirement for a more efficient approach to disseminating information to seafarers to increase their level of awareness. The present study represents a noteworthy advancement in comprehending the perception of climate change among seafarers, and it is anticipated that this will stimulate additional inquiries in this domain","PeriodicalId":325307,"journal":{"name":"Blue Economy","volume":"20 5","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135873079","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fish catch and productivity have decreased sharply. The Egyptian government interfered in 2017 and introduced action plan for restoring the lake’s vitality. NIOF research team took part and conducted a research that aims at estimating the secular trend of total fish catch and of the major marine and brackish waters species: Tilapia, Catfish and Mullet, before and during the plan. The research also aims at assessing optimal catch-effort relation before and during the plan, and the effect of the plan on the fishers’ livelihood. The methodology involves time series analysis and Schaefer Surplus model. Field visits and meetings with the plan team and GAFRD officials were held. The results of the study revealed a decreasing secular trend of total fish catch and of major marine and brackish species in the first period of study. During the plan works, it was found that the real catch data of Tilapia, Catfish and Mullet species published in GAFRD statistics were higher than the forecasted catches of the first period by about 14%, 36.2% and 99.3% respectively. The money value of this increase will assist greatly in improving fishers’ livelihood and gross fish income of the lake’s fisheries. It was also found that the actual number of boats (2.7 thousand) in the first period is lower than the estimated allowable limit (3.2 thousand) by about 500 boats, and that the real fish catch (54.9 thousand tons) is also lower than the allowable estimated catch (66.1 thousand tons) by about 11.2 thousand tons. It is recommended to increase the number of licensed working boats by about 500 boats. Updating data, increasing the accuracy of catch-effort data, and reducing lag period are also recommended.","PeriodicalId":325307,"journal":{"name":"Blue Economy","volume":"18 6","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135872980","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
