Because physical phenomena affect transceiver pipelines in difficult to predict ways, detailed simulation of the entire transceiver system is needed to evaluate even a single processing block. Further, some protocol validations require simulation of rare events (say, 1 bit error in 109 bits), which means the protocol must simulate for a long enough time for such events to materialize. This requirement coupled with the heavy computation typical of most physical-layer processing, rules out pure software solutions. In this paper we describe WiLIS, an FPGA-based hybrid hardware-software system designed to facilitate the development of wireless protocols. We then use WiLIS to evaluate several microarchitectures for measuring very low bit-error rates (BER). We demonstrate, for the first time, that the recently proposed SoftPHY [16, 30] can be implemented efficiently in hardware.","PeriodicalId":323366,"journal":{"name":"(IEEE ISPASS) IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128256184","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This shift to CMPs has created many challenges for fully utilizing the power of multiple execution cores. One of these challenges is managing contention for shared resources. Most of the recent research address contention for shared resources by single-threaded applications. However, as CMPs scale up to many cores, the trend of application design has shifted towards multi-threaded programming and new parallel models to fully utilize the underlying hardware. There are differences between how single- and multi-threaded applications contend for shared resources. Therefore, to develop approaches to reduce shared resource contention for emerging multi-threaded applications, it is crucial to understand how their performances are affected by contention for a particular shared resource. In this research, we propose and evaluate a general methodology for characterizing multi-threaded applications by determining the effect of shared-resource contention on performance. To demonstrate the methodology, we characterize the applications in the widely used PARSEC benchmark suite for shared-memory resource contention. The characterization reveals several interesting aspects of the benchmark suite. Three of twelve PARSEC benchmarks exhibit no contention for cache resources. Nine of the benchmarks exhibit contention for the L2-cache. Of these nine, only three exhibit contention between their own threads-most contention is because of competition with a co-runner. Interestingly, contention for the Front Side Bus is a major factor with all but two of the benchmarks and degrades performance by more than 11%.","PeriodicalId":323366,"journal":{"name":"(IEEE ISPASS) IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE","volume":"181 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133055635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To maximize the performance of such systems requires measurement, analysis, and optimization techniques that specifically target multicore environments. This paper first examines traditional unicore metrics and demonstrates how they can be misleading in a multicore system. Second, it examines and characterizes performance bottlenecks specific to multicore-based systems. Third, it describes performance measurement challenges that arise in multicore systems and outlines methods for extracting sound measurements that lead to performance optimization opportunities. The measurement and analysis process is based on a case study of the HOMME atmospheric modeling benchmark code from NCAR running on supercomputers built upon AMD Barcelona and Intel Nehalem quad-core processors. Applying the multicore bottleneck analysis to HOMME led to multicore aware source-code optimizations that increased performance by up to 35%. While the case studies were carried out on multichip nodes of supercomputers using an HPC application as the target for optimization, the pitfalls identified and the insights obtained should apply to any system that is composed of multicore processors.","PeriodicalId":323366,"journal":{"name":"(IEEE ISPASS) IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE","volume":"113 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128483322","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many publications have demonstrated phenomenal performance and have reported speedups as much as 1000× over code running on multi-core CPUs. Other studies have claimed that well-tuned CPU code reduces the performance gap significantly. We demonstrate that this important discussion is missing a key aspect, specifically the question of where in the system data resides, and the overhead to move the data to where it will be used, and back again if necessary. We have benchmarked a broad set of GPU kernels on a number of platforms with different GPUs and our results show that when memory transfer times are included, it can easily take between 2 to 50× longer to run a kernel than the GPU processing time alone. Therefore, it is necessary to either include memory transfer overhead when reporting GPU performance, or to explain why this is not relevant for the application in question. We suggest a taxonomy for future CPU/GPU comparisons, and we argue that this is not only germane for reporting performance, but is important to heterogeneous scheduling research in general.","PeriodicalId":323366,"journal":{"name":"(IEEE ISPASS) IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122905777","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work, we present an in-depth analysis of 177 SPECpower_ssj2008 results published between 2007–2010 to understand the changes of server's power behavior over time. In particular, we identified simple nonlinear functions appropriate for modeling the power behavior of today's, aggressively power-managed, machines. We consider this work as an important first step towards developing capability for power signature analysis of a high-end computer system.","PeriodicalId":323366,"journal":{"name":"(IEEE ISPASS) IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133807648","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the high energy consumption of writes and limited number of write cycles, reducing the number of writes to PCM can result in considerable energy savings and endurance improvement. In this paper, we introduce the concept of useless write-backs, which occur when a dirty cache line that belongs to a dead memory region is evicted from the cache (a dead region is a memory location that is not used again by a program). Since the evicted data is not used again, the write-back can be safely avoided to improve endurance and energy consumption. This paper presents a limit study on the improvement that passing information to the memory system about useless writebacks has on the endurance and energy consumption of systems based on PCM main memory. We developed algorithms to measure the number of useless write-backs to PCM for three different types of memory regions and we present an energy model to determine the maximum energy savings that could potentially be achieved through such a scheme. Our results show that avoiding useless write-backs can save up to 19.8% of energy and improve endurance by up to 26.2%.","PeriodicalId":323366,"journal":{"name":"(IEEE ISPASS) IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE","volume":"94 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121146366","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the main challenges when trying to evaluate storage system options is the difficulty in replaying the entire application in all possible system configurations. Furthermore, code and datasets of DC applications are rarely available to storage system designers. This makes the development of a representative model that captures key aspects of the workload's storage profile, even more appealing. Once such a model is available, the next step is to create a tool that convincingly reproduces the application's storage behavior via a synthetic I/O access pattern.","PeriodicalId":323366,"journal":{"name":"(IEEE ISPASS) IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129757599","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Efficient memory tracing by program skeletonization","authors":"A. Ketterlin, P. However, instrumenting every memory access incurs a large overhead, in the amount of code injected in the original program as well as in execution time. This paper describes how static analysis of the binary code can be used to reduce the amount of instrumentation. The analysis extracts loops and memory access functions by tracking how memory addresses are computed from a small set of base registers holding, e.g., routine parameters and loop counters. Instrumenting these base registers instead of memory operands reduces the weight of instrumentation, first statically by reducing the amount of injected code, and second dynamically by reducing the amount of instrumentation code actually executed. Also, because the static analysis extracts intermediate-level program structures (loops and branches) and access functions in symbolic form, it is easy to transform the original executable into a skeleton program that consumes base register values and produces memory addresses. The first advantage of using a skeleton is to be able to overlap the execution of the instrumented program with that of the skeleton, thereby reducing the overhead of recomputing addresses. The second advantage is that the skeleton program and its shorter input trace can be saved and rerun as many times as necessary without requiring access to the original architecture, e.g., for cache design space exploration.","PeriodicalId":323366,"journal":{"name":"(IEEE ISPASS) IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121668316","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a result, the latency of DRAM access not only depends on the circuit timing parameters but also memory access patterns. This study derives an analytical model that predicts the DRAM access performance using DRAM timing and memory access pattern parameters. As a performance metric, the bank busy time of DRAM is used. The pattern parameters employed represent memory access characteristics such as the number of row-buffer misses, the number of read or write requests that hit the row-buffers, etc. The proposed model not only relates the DRAM access performance with the memory access pattern but also provides information for timing optimization of next generation DRAMs. The model is evaluated with SPLASH-2 benchmark by using cycle-accurate timing simulations with DDR3 timings. The evaluation results show that, in memory-bounded cases, the execution time is limited by bank utilization, not by the data bus occupation ratio.","PeriodicalId":323366,"journal":{"name":"(IEEE ISPASS) IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE","volume":"3 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129201621","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Minimizing interference through application mapping in multi-level buffer caches","authors":"C. Patrick, Nicholas Voshell, M. Kandemir","doi":"10.1109/ISPASS.2011.5762714","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ISPASS.2011.5762714","url":null,"abstract":"In this paper, we study the impact of cache sharing on co-mapped applications in multi-level buffer cache hierarchies. When the number of applications exceeds the number of resources, resource sharing is inevitable. However, unless applications are co-mapped carefully, destructive interference may cause applications to thrash and spend most of their time paging data to and from disks. We propose two novel models which predict the performance of an application in the presence of other applications and an algorithm which uses the output of these models to perform application-to-node mapping in a multi-level buffer cache hierarchy. Our models use the reuse distances of the application reference streams and their respective I/O rates. This information can be obtained either online or offline. Our main advantage is that we do not require profile information of all application pairs to predict their interferences. The goal of this mapping is to minimize destructive interference during execution. We validate the effectiveness of our models and mapping scheme using several I/O-intensive applications, and found that the error in prediction of our two models is only 3.9% and 2.7% respectively, on average. Further, using our approach, we were effectively able to co-map applications to maximize the performance of the buffer cache hierarchy by 43.6% and 56.8% on average over the median and worst mappings respectively in the entire I/O stack.","PeriodicalId":323366,"journal":{"name":"(IEEE ISPASS) IEEE INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON PERFORMANCE ANALYSIS OF SYSTEMS AND SOFTWARE","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-04-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114358319","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
