During the planning phase, it is important to design an optimal, economical and safe dewatering system and technical solutions aimed to eliminate the influence of underground structure on groundwater levels in the neighbourhood. Mathematical modelling of groundwater filtration allows creating a prognosis of excavation dewatering process and influence of new buildings on groundwater levels in subject areas during both execution and operation of structure. The paper presents an example of groundwater filtration modelling for a shopping mall in the centre of Budapest, using SPRING software. The project includes the construction of a large building with an underground story for cars. With filtration models, it was possible to assess the changes in groundwater flow fields caused by projected structure and its excavation dewatering system and the prognosis of groundwater levels around the building, taking into consideration the influence of the flood wave from the Danube on groundwater filtration in the investment area. Based on modelling results the suitable technical solutions were proposed, which allow limiting the effect on the surrounding buildings and the potential changes of water levels in the investment area.\u0000\u0000

Among the balance areas documented directly by the PGI-NRI is the Wisłoka catchment and part of the Wielopolka catchment covering the Flysch Carpathians. The geological and structural structure of the Wisłoka catchment brings about the diversification of hydrogeological conditions, and the largest amounts of groundwater are found in the Quaternary formations of river valleys. Disposable resources were located within them due to the thick (considering the Carpathian conditions) packages of well-permeable sediments. In a situation when part of disposable resources (calculated by the hydrological method) could not be used in a given drainage basin, due to exceeded permissible groundwater table reduction in protected areas, it was decided to transfer unused reserves to balance areas of midwives in lower sections of rivers in a manner that does not interfere with the protection of their minimum acceptable flows.\u0000\u0000

In case of the Potok Służewiecki, the most important problem is a significant difference in the chemical composition \u0000of surface and groundwater. An important part of the Potok Służewiecki water originates from polluted water discharged from rainwater sewage collectors. Discharged groundwater is mostly categorized as the quality class II, but significant concentrations of Fe and Mn reduce its categorization to quality class III. In order to determine the extent of changes in the chemical composition of the Potok Służewiecki water due to water mixing process, geochemical modelling in various quantitative ratios was carried out. Obtained results show lowering \u0000of the pH and almost complete transition of all Fe speciations into the Fe3+ form, regardless of the mixing ration of ground and surface water. This implies the appearance of coloured water in the Potok Służewiecki. Therefore, assuming the use of additional aeration measures, the oxygen amount needed for complete removal of iron from groundwater before its discharge to the Potok Służewiecki was calculated. Their exploitation is possible with a mining concession and permission of use. Geothermal groundwaters in Poland are used in heating, balneotherapy and recreation purposes. Over the last years, investigations have been carried out to intensify the use of geothermal groundwaters. They can be used as new geothermal products, for example as a mineralised concentrate. Investment projects related to geothermal groundwaters should be prepared with care about safe and sustained exploitation in long-term perspective. Using of geothermal groundwaters is determined by technical and economical conditions. However, successful exploitation depends also on natural conditions e.g. water temperature, physical features, chemical composition and durability of parameters, and renewability of resources. Recognition of these elements give a basic information that nowadays can be integrated as mathematical models. The models are created to analyse and simulate the conditions of geothermal systems. It often happens before starting project operating activities. The paper presents examples of projects carried out over the recent years. They have been associated with the using and management of geothermal groundwaters and the key role has been played by mathematical modelling in the field of geothermy and hydrogeology.

Such medium is composed of two subdomains, each characterized by different hydraulic properties (including transmissivity, T). Dewatering of excavations affects exploitable groundwater resources. It causes only temporal changes, but if they last several tens of years, local population is forced to modernize existing or even build new groundwater intakes. Mines discharge water into rivers, and local residents have problems with water supply. The municipality has the right not to agree for dewatering, but then it limits the activities of the mining industry. Therefore, it is very important to recognize not only the mining excavations affected by water inflow, but also the scope of hydrodynamic changes and their impact on groundwater intake facilities. The basic computational tool for prediction the effects of extraction of mineral resources below the water table should be a properly constructed mathematical model of a dewatered aquifer. The model should be stationary and should be used to prepare further forecasts for the assessment of damage caused by mining operations, depending on the progress in the exploitation of minerals. This will allow anticipating actions to cover possible losses in water supply to people, agriculture and the local industry. The forecasting of water circulation and the dynamics of the process of pollutants leaching and their migration is supported by numerical modelling programs that allow assessing real conditions to follow changes in the processes over time. In case of reclamation of an open pit with post-mining wastes from hard coal mines, model research for the assessment of its impact on the aquatic environment should be supported by a complex of modern, uniform and mutually complementary methods of testing rock materials. The numerical models of groundwater flow and migration of pollutants required, among others, data on hydrogeological properties of rocks deposited in a storage site. They are based on both the results of field and laboratory tests. An important element in forecasting the impact of post-mining waste used in the reclamation of an open pit on groundwater is the quantitative assessment of the absorptive capacity of deposited wastes (mainly Carboniferous rocks) and the volume of free spaces of rock debris as a zone particularly susceptible to mineral weathering and pollution leaching. These tests must be carried out simultaneously with the simulation, in the laboratory, of changes in the filtration coefficient of loose materials depending on the thickness of the dump and changes in the vertical pressure exerted by rocks filled up during reclamation. Based on the example of research conducted on the material stored in the excavation after exploitation of backfilling sand, the authors proposed to adapt the research methods originally developed for the purposes of forecasting water hazards in mine shafts and underground excavations for the need of assessing changes in water circulation conditions within the dump.

The impact of water pumping at depression areas on the dynamics of the first (shallow) aquifer was analysed in the Natura 2000 site called “Uroczyska w Lasach Stepnickich PLH320033”. Simulation of the impact of water pumping on lowering of groundwater levels based on hydrodynamic modelling shows that the minimum groundwater level variations in the depression range occur only in a small southern part of the area, and the impact is of short-term nature. The basic factor affecting shallow groundwater in the analysed area is the water table level in the Odra River.
