The chapter looks at the evolution of the human species, the effects of the shift to sedentism some 11,000 years ago, and how travel can impact our mental state. The author introduces the concept of Deep Travel, a way of using the mind that opens us up to new experiences. Different than either daydreaming or closely focused attention, which both seal us off from the world, Deep Travel is alert to everything around us. This way of thinking, the author argues, evolved due to the altered perspective afforded by bipedalism; and is a state of mind that we must nurture, in our sedentist societies, if we are to foster human well-being in future. The chapter also examines the importance of travel for creativity, mental health, and healthy aging.","PeriodicalId":320799,"journal":{"name":"Why Travel?","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114864714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This chapter shows how, in the ancient world, movement was often viewed as an aid to thinking, and many philosophers built this into their teaching. More recently, the importance of travel for broadening the mind and as a formative part of learning has been emphasised by leading philosophers. At the same time, some philosophers have observed that travel can leave us disappointed, and this chapter explores some of the reasons thinkers have given for this problem. The chapter also examines how travel and movement have begun to be considered a fundamental human right.","PeriodicalId":320799,"journal":{"name":"Why Travel?","volume":"105 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128590061","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The development of transport technology has enabled us to travel more cheaply, more comfortably, faster and for longer distances – hence the massive growth of travel with all its attendant and varied effects. The chapter argues that the impacts of substitutionary technology (e.g. telecommunications) or non-transport technology (e.g. better storage of food) are more complex and difficult to predict, especially since people do not always behave rationally, but these technologies play an important role in shaping our travel behaviours. The chapter briefly examines possible future technological developments before concluding that we need to develop resilient technologies to allow for uncertainty whilst tackling the need for sustainability in future travel.","PeriodicalId":320799,"journal":{"name":"Why Travel?","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125548856","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The examples of the search for freedom and social mobility show how mass movements have occurred due to the desire to move from the place and position in which people were born to different positions in the social structure. Moving from one socioeconomic group to another is strongly related with the ability to move jobs, housing, and social groups all of which are enabled by travel. The expansion of mass travel has enabled family structures to survive even though the traditional three generational family residing and working near to each other has largely disappeared. Of course, such ability to travel freely is not available to all equally and the chapter also flags up the disadvantages caused by lack of travel based on income, gender and disability. The chapter also considers the way in which travel shapes and reinforces political beliefs.","PeriodicalId":320799,"journal":{"name":"Why Travel?","volume":"55 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115044789","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors show how travel, place, and human connectivity are intimately connected with physical, cultural and psychological perspectives. Thus, if the public realm is to work well to incorporate function, beauty, safety, a sense of belonging and also encourage sustainable travel there is a need to build good places and good journeys which meet these needs. The chapter also provides case studies of good examples which emphasise the methods, skills and challenges involved in achieving this outcome. The authors argue that it is essential that we plan for the ‘long-now’, fully considering the needs of the future in order to make good places and good journeys for all.","PeriodicalId":320799,"journal":{"name":"Why Travel?","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133681962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
