It aimed to find out the similarities and differences between these two literary works and how these works were able to convey the perspectives of self-actualization. This is a qualitative method and implemented the theory by Abraham Maslow that focused on hierarchy of needs and self-actualization in analysing the data through the texts or the scripts. The findings showed that the two literary works that had been objects of this study showed similarities and differences for the physiological, safety, love, esteem, and even self-actualization needs. Each literary work might offered various style or uniqueness. However, they still portrayed a spot of similarity to each other especially in conveying moral lesson and Indonesian culture and behaviour such as respecting or being polite to each other and praising others sincerely without being envious. In addition, these two literary works showed that the fulfilment of self-actualization is important for human being and literary works were able to portray it properly.","PeriodicalId":32048,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Bahasa Lingua Scientia","volume":"248 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135359214","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method used is literature search and the approach used is hermeneutics to interpret the meaning of the texts contained in the poem. The poem explains Taufik Ismail's views on the debate regarding the determination of the beginning of Islamic months in Indonesia. In conveying his views, Taufik uses a dialogue model between a 13-year-old child and the moon. The results of the research through the interpretation of the text in the poem show that there is a Muhammadiyah Falak Science reasoning in Taufik Ismail's view regarding the determination of the beginning of the Islamic month in this poem. This can be seen from some of the characteristics of Muhammadiyah Falak Science, namely the belief in the regularity of the circulation of the sun and moon, where with this regularity one can predict the position of the sun and moon in the future by means of mathematical calculations with the criterion of Wujudul Hilal. Taufik is also of the view that determining the beginning of an Islamic month is a worldly affair where a person based on religion may decide in his own way.","PeriodicalId":32048,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Bahasa Lingua Scientia","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135751235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The teacher could use several strategies during the learning process to be able to achieve the learning objectives. This study aimed to optimize the use of the Survey, Question, Read, Recite, Record, Review, Reflect (SQ5R) method in teaching reading during online learning at SMPN 3 Lamongan. The researcher used action research with direct observation during the learning process. The results showed that the SQ5R method could improve students' reading comprehension. The minimum score obtained by students in the initial test was 45. This value increased up to 65 in the final test, which indicated that all students had reached the minimum passing criteria standard that had been set. Meanwhile, the observations showed that students were able to analyze visual information, predict content and improve their notes. Overall, it was evident that the SQ5R approach has a positive impact on students' reading comprehension.","PeriodicalId":32048,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Bahasa Lingua Scientia","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135090307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the mistakes is the error in explaining graphs in English. This competency is highly needed to be applied in many aspects, especially for vocational university students. For example, explaining a chart in English is somehow mandatory in composing a budget or presenting a project to a client. Thus, this study is aimed to identify the types of grammatical errors typically done by the learners. By applying the descriptive qualitative methodology, the 30 data used in this study are taken from the sample of students’ writing in explaining a chart in English. The steps taken are done by doing data categorization based on Dulay’s surface strategy taxonomy which mentions four types of errors: addition, omission, misformation, and misordering. The results show that omission is the type of error mostly done by learners with 34,78%, followed by addition with 31,88% occurrence, and the least error found in the data is misorder with 10,14%. It is suggested that students should be equipped with basic Grammar understanding in explaining a graph in English, so this kind of error will be minimized. This study is also expected to give insight to lecturers in composing the General English syllabus that emphasizes the student’s understanding of basic Grammar.","PeriodicalId":32048,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Bahasa Lingua Scientia","volume":"168 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135860622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, many areas remain to be explored. Even though previous research studies often portrayed the beneficial impacts of integrating reading and writing, yet they do not suggest how such impacts affect the students in a specific course. Hence, the present research study aims to propose a design of reading-writing teaching strategy that needs to be addressed within a specific course especially the academic writing course. This research study employed the adapted model of ADDIE (Dick et al., 2015) to develop the proposed teaching strategy. The process of need analysis was carried out through analysing the introduction section of research articles written by the undergraduate students using Swales and Feak’s CARS model (2004) and examining the syllabus of reading and writing courses. Meanwhile, as the primary frameworks for the teaching strategy development, the rhetorical reading strategies and academic writing were adopted. The results of need analysis show that, mostly, undergraduate students’ research articles lack 1 step in Move 1, 2 steps in Move 2, and 3 steps in Move 3 particularly in the introduction section. The omission of steps in the CARS model by these student-authors seems to happen due to two major factors, namely the scarcity of (1) control over the writing process and (2) linguistic resources. Hence, suggesting the reading-writing teaching strategy for academic writing courses is considered essential.","PeriodicalId":32048,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Bahasa Lingua Scientia","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135860624","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It examines ESP students' attitudes towards the use of Jamboard in enhancing their self-introduction skills through a mixed-method approach, using both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A survey questionnaire was administered to 131 ESP students. The study found that the respondents have a high perception of Jamboard's usefulness, ease of use, appearance, and interaction towards their self-introduction, with a mean score of 3.8. The technology was found to be user-friendly, easy to use, and helpful in presenting ideas and showcasing creativity. However, some students also encountered difficulties with Jamboard's usability and features. The recommendations include providing support and training for the effective use of digital tools like Jamboard and incorporating user-friendly features. These implications can inform educators and developers in promoting student engagement, creativity, and collaborative learning. Further research can explore the impact of Jamboard on student learning outcomes and their perceptions and use of digital tools in the classroom.","PeriodicalId":32048,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Bahasa Lingua Scientia","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136370191","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It examines the way the post editor reads, thinks, speculates, and makes decision to the machine translation results and correcting the problems founds from the translated text. Thinking Aloud Protocols (TAPs) is used as the approach of the study to record the meta-cognitive strategies applied by the post editor. Several instruments such as video recording tools, machine-translated text, and timer are operated during the data collection. From the study, it is shown that reasoning and problem solving become the most running strategy from the post-editor. It occurs since the post-editor mostly looks for the problems and tries to find a way of correcting mistakes from the translation. The result also shows that the post-editor tries to comprehend the problems and decides the accurate decision when song the post-editing. The cognitive process and meta-cognitive strategies are quite different between the translator and the post-editor.

Linguistic competence is largely concerned with a notion shared by language teachers and learners when using language knowledge in real performance. English teachers are expected to have this competency. The present study aimed to examine linguistic competence in morphology teaching, which was demonstrated by an English teacher. The morphology teaching was sourced from a series of YouTube videos which were broadcast by a teacher on a Youtube channel. This study was carried out by analyzing the linguistic competence of the teacher in each video by analogizing the teacher’s knowledge with the theory from the linguistics book written by some experts. The selected books which were used to analyze were: “How English Works, A Linguistic Introduction” (Curzan & Adams, 2012); “Linguistics, An Introduction” (Radford et al., 2009); and “Contemporary Linguistic Analysis, An Introduction” (O’Grady & Archibald, 2016). The study’s findings revealed that the teacher had sufficient linguistic competence while delivering the course. The findings also assisted in recognizing that linguistic competence is a significant part of the analysis in terms of how a teacher may remain competent while providing the course. In short, linguistics is considered valuable because it may increase teacher’s awareness of language, making the teacher more competent and, hence, a better language teacher.","PeriodicalId":32048,"journal":{"name":"Jurnal Bahasa Lingua Scientia","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135144625","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
