It is argued that there still is merit in combining the human longing for securitas with a biblical sense of certitudo. First, a short selection of religious or ecclesiastical thought and action on the topic of security and safety is examined. Then, today’s thinking about security is analyzed through the lens of Adam’s timescape concept. Finally, I advocate the need for a biblically informed eschatological interpretation of security concerns that reorients the existing administrative, social scientific, or other academic approaches to fear, danger, threat, and insecurity.","PeriodicalId":319208,"journal":{"name":"Christian Faith, Philosophy & International Relations","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114392516","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Both in his work and in his speeches he promoted an attitude of international service. He perceived the quest for maturity and maturity of mind as basic elements of this attitude. This article explores Hammarskjold’s search for maturity in three aspects: first in his capacity as an international civil servant; then the personal quest of his inner person; and finally in his role as moral leader. As an explorative case study, the article traces Hammarskjold’s main thoughts and insights in response to his mission to Beijing and its follow-up in 1955. It further illustrates the relevance of his approach in the world we live in today.","PeriodicalId":319208,"journal":{"name":"Christian Faith, Philosophy & International Relations","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-05-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123183835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This article argues that the ethical critique of carbon commodification derives moral coherence and strength from its implicit religious foundation, that is, the “Protestant” understanding of social ethics on which it relies. The argument is threefold. First, the ethical critique of carbon commodification is not a strictly ethical position, as it typically depends on prophetic indictment as well as moral-philosophical concerns. Second, the ethical critique of carbon commodification involves a secularized continuation of the “Protestant” tradition within Christian thought. Third, its “Protestant-ness” gives the ethical critique of carbon commodification critical power, as the very occurrence of climate change implies coherency problems for the opposing dominant “Roman” tradition.","PeriodicalId":319208,"journal":{"name":"Christian Faith, Philosophy & International Relations","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126995035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first is to recognize and deal forthrightly with the normative dimension of international political responsibilities. The second is to seek a big-picture understanding of our shrinking, diversifying world with all of its rapidly changing, intensifying complexities in domestic governance, non-government organizations, and international administrative and adjudicating bodies. The final challenge is to ask self-critically how Christians should be approaching the responsibilities they exercise in domestic and international affairs as well as in research, writing, and teaching in the field.","PeriodicalId":319208,"journal":{"name":"Christian Faith, Philosophy & International Relations","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122249719","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
