Through the process of quilting, I story my experience of resisting the Sleep Industrial Complex. I explore the biocultural arena of sleep and critique the biomedical construction of sleeplessness as insomnia. I argue that the medicalization of sleeplessness works to support multi-billion-dollar industries that purport to cure insomnia through consumerism (Barbee et al., 2018; Williams, 2008). I describe how radically accepting sleeplessness as a facet of my existence, and not a medicalized disorder, is an expression of self-acceptance and an act of self-care. Such an approach is predicated on a continuous movement of situated stories as the heart of the learning encounter, generated relationally between object-body-space, or artwork- learner-museum. As a forum for deliberation, the purpose of this conversation is to consider how emotions, as the basis for teaching with caring and sensory awareness, bring vitality, aliveness, and feelings to the fore. This conversation explores affective epiphanies sourced from personal practical knowledge as an expression of arts- research-in-progress. By drawing on autoethnographic life writing, I explore an alternate approach to three museum collections that demonstrate how and why the aesthetic relation of stories operate as pedagogic pivots in ways that reconfigure conventional museum engagement. Watfern","doi":"10.18432/ari29546","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18432/ari29546","url":null,"abstract":"\u0000\u0000\u0000\u0000At Studio A, a supported studio for neurodiverse artists, the prolific painter, performer, photocopier, and installation artist Thom Roberts frequently reaches out to connect with friends and fellow artists by running his hands across the backs of their heads; “reading” their crowns. It’s a blessing I have been lucky enough to receive countless times over the course of my ethnographic engagement with Studio A, and as my relationship with Thom has developed. During my research, I have witnessed Thom read crowns in all kinds of contexts, from pubs to art galleries, in a performance artwork that could also be understood as an experimental artist talk. Here, I trace the narrative of this facet of Thom’s practice. Ethical incongruities exist between theoretical perspectives regarding right action for protection of women’s dignity and the tangible dilemma presented by systemic silencing. A fictive imagination found in the arts – and literature in particular – often plays a role in bridging that ethical gap between theory and practice. Using my arts-based approach of poet(h)ic inquiry (Duff, 2016a), I portray the symbolic power of women’s voices, fictionality, and textual polyvocality in a research-based play. Poet(h)ic inquiry is a method for ethical reflection incorporating spiritual and poetic-aesthetic values: a pedagogical space of inquiry within a non-fixed site of teaching, life-long learning, creativity, and knowing, located at the confluence of the creative writing process (in the context of fiction as research), ethics, and spirit. In “Story about Story. Toronto 2001,” I inquire poet(h)ically, in a speculative fictional tale about a woman’s journey with her baby, using research journal data and “freefall writing” notes as springboard for a “fictive leap” (Mitchell, 1977). Through the fictive writing process, knowledge is generated with respect to themes of isolation and connection towards re-finding the lost self’s language. Voices heard and unheard, pinpoint an ethic of meaning towards transcending silence, suffering, and colonial injustices. My story evokes ironies and eco-ethical queries within wildlife research, as well as questions evoked by the sensory overload of urban commerce, and an unspoken class system. Reviewing some traditional literary and rhetorical analyses alongside social theory, I reflect on ways of reading and citing, which inform our own fiction writing practices. In the first section, I consider how to read the text seriously as the starting point of sharing literary social worlds, followed by a vignette of critiquing fiction through citations to subvert dominant narratives. Research and curriculum design are rarely available for the purpose of improving juvenile postsecondary correctional education thereby not improving recidivism rates of formerly incarcerated students. The pilot program in this study attempted to provide a comprehensive university program for long-term incarcerated juveniles to get them on track to obtain a bachelor’s degree. This study addressed the academic experiences, including the School to Prison Pipeline and the academic experience to provide information, justifying the importance of creating postsecondary academic opportunities for incarcerated juveniles. Then, the study analyzed interviews with recently released students of the program to give insight to correctional education experiences vis-à-vis artistic representations, in this case, short fiction. With guests and artists from the year 2030, it discussed how the transition to a climate-proof city had happened since 2019. In this article, we present and frame the development of the show and provide insight into the participative creation process. The radio show exemplifies (a) how future fiction can be used as a tool to evoke change and (b) how the participatory development of futurist fiction can be used as a method to trigger imagination and conversation on what citizens want for our cities. We argue that there is an opportunity for researchers to explore fiction as a method, as a format and as a space. This second newsletter is followed by a commentary and references for both newsletters. \u0000Attentive to local and global mental health realities and the emergent need to provide intercultural mental health perspectives, resources, and methods that work across cultures in school contexts, I (the first author) conducted a participatory poetic inquiry, “Image, Body, and Voice: Supporting Girls’ Sense of Wellbeing,” with grade-6 girls in an inner-city school in Alberta. It sought to: (i) meet new Teacher Quality Standards (TQS) “to build positive and productive relationships with students [and] peers” (AB Education, 2018, p. 4); and (ii) be “aware of and facilitate responses to the emotional and mental health needs of students” (p. 6). I was guided by the following research question: In what ways might girls’ experiences with art-integrated activities and body-centred methods inform educators about pedagogical practice and mental health interventions? \u0000Findings indicated the transdisciplinary praxis that emerged—arts-based, contemplative and somatic methods—enhanced the girls’ sense of self and wellbeing. The youth reported that these activities had explicit value: sharing circles used for check-ins and - outs, ceremony—which welcomed witnessing—relational and body-centred practices, and one-on-one time with the PI. The life-size body maps as research creation illustrated that the participants learned to externalize sensations and emotions in a safe way, aiding them in the development of skills needed for emotional self-regulation. Body maps broadly defined are life-size body images, while body mapping is the process of creating body maps using collage, photography, painting, or other arts-integrated methods to visually symbolize aspects of people’s lives, their bodies, and their worlds. \u0000Funding from Research Impact Canada, VP Research & Innovation University of Alberta and the Kule Institute for Advanced Study aided to mobilize evidence-informed knowledge from this research through professional community engagement with pre- service teachers at a full-day workshop. Presenters at the workshop were members of a Community of Professional Practice (COPP) where the activities of educational research and trauma-sensitive practices were shared, including culturally aware methods for diverse populations.
