It is argued that measurements of spin observables in this reaction can provide new information on the three‐body (contact) interactions. Such an information is not available from measurements of NN observables and can be obtained from the analysis of the 12 amplitudes which describe p‐d elastic scattering. We discuss the sensitivity of the spin observables to such three‐body interactions in the framework of a realistic model in which each of these amplitudes is separated into 1) ‘‘trivial part,’’ involving single and double scattering terms, unambiguously expressible in terms of physical nucleon‐nucleon (NN) scattering amplitudes and 2) the ‘‘nontrivial part’’ which can not be expressed in terms of two‐body interactions, and represents contributions generated by three‐body forces. We find that the agreement between the data and the model predictions is considerably improved when such three‐nucleon inte...","PeriodicalId":316054,"journal":{"name":"Intersections between particle and nuclear physics","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115592008","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Dudley Miller showed how the basic phenomenology of the major shell and spin‐orbit splittings constrained the relativistic scalar/vector structure model to values of the potentials incompatible with the observed magnetic moments of nuclei one nucleon away from closed shell [1]. In this talk the resolution of this problem is presented from three different perspectives. First a self‐consistent Landau‐Migdal approach is used to define the single particle isoscalar current in infinite nuclear matter. The constraint of self‐consistency provides a vector suppression factor to the single particle current which returns the current to its nonrelativistic form and resolves the problem. The same suppression factor is shown to follow as well from either a consideration of gauge invariance or (equivalently) the relativistic random phase approximation. Local density approximation calculations of isoscalar magnetic moments of nuclei one nucleon away from closed shell recover the Schmidt values, thus resolving...","PeriodicalId":316054,"journal":{"name":"Intersections between particle and nuclear physics","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132129092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
