This study focuses on the culture that exists in the Banyuwangi area, East Java, specifically the Gajah Oling batik motif in the Gandrung dance outfit. This study uses descriptive research methods with observational research techniques and literature studies. The Gajah Oling batik motif will be studied using an ethnosemiotic and aesthetic approach which aims to describe the Gajah Oling batik motif and its innovations and its application to the Gandrung dance fashion. Through this study of ethnosemiotics and aesthetics on the Gajah Oling batik motif, the researcher hopes that the public will be more open and understand the importance of preserving the Gajah Oling batik motif of the Osing tribe of Banyuwangi Regency, including its application to the Gandrung dance costume. This research is very unique because the meaning & visual signs that appear in it are able to identify a place according to the demographic & geographic classification of its visitors. The category in this study is included in the realm of visual culture with a qualitative descriptive model, using the semiotic method. The problem read by the researcher tries to answer whether a cultural artifact in the form of a visual identity can describe the concept of a private-public space in the form of a Coffee Shop & Coffeeshop which is determined by the cultural presence of the citizens of Surabaya. In order to achieve this goal, the observation process is carried out by observing & documenting visual identity, then analyzed using the Saussure Visual Analysis Method to find the meaning behind the documentation of the coffee shops produced by the owner. The researcher’s point of view is the main point assisted by references from sources related to the topic in research as a perspective in dissecting the unit of research analysis. The visual methodology is used as an analysis of the existence of branding, typography (text & writing), illustrations/images, equipment, & the overall design of the space. The urgency in research can add to the repertoire of visual culture research which concludes that the existence of private-public places/spaces has an identity that involves physical & social aspects, whereas the City of Surabaya is the study aspect. The coffee shop is closely related to the ‘Arek’ & ‘Cangkrukan’ culture in Surabaya. Warung Kopi is synonymous with a simple & open ‘coffee’ place. Meanwhile, Coffeeshop is synonymous with private public space which is exclusive to the public. The differentiation of these two objects makes this research on visual identity need to be developed further. Because the object in the research object is a cultural artifact that can develop a civilization, so there will always be an ideological element in the visual element that continues to develop following culture & technology. This research is descriptive qualitative by using a multidisciplinary approach, culture, aesthetics in the hope that it can answer all the problems. Changes caused by internal factors can occur due to new interpretations and perceptions of the Pacitan community, as a community that supports batik cloth. Pacitan people have a sense to participate in the development, innovation, ideas, and new creations of Pacitan batik. Changes caused by external factors generally occur because of relationships, communication, and social and cultural interactions with other cultures. Pacitan batik products have also experienced developments and changes, both in quantity and quality. Broadly speaking, the changes that occurred in Pacitan batik were marked by a change in its function, from the beginning as a long cloth worn by women during official events or during celebrations, to now becoming a trade commodity product. The motifs applied to Pacitan batik initially contained deep philosophical symbolic meanings, but now these meanings have been put aside, and only evaluated for their aesthetic aspects. This debate is often a stumbling block for musicians and also in the field of formal and non-formal education. They are in a confusing position because of the various terms that exist and the identification of the concept of Indonesian vocal music composition which is less comprehensive. Therefore, there is a personal selfishness that tends to reduce the true meaning of the work itself. The author uses a musicological perspective as an entry point to provide a new discourse regarding the composition of Indonesian vocal music. This musicological approach is a process of study, investigation and reflection while still paying attention to the relationship between context and compositional work. The author is also aware of the limitations of the space and time of the research, so that this research is not possible to fully cover all vocal music works composed by Indonesian composers.
