Taha","doi":"10.18260/1-2-370-38561","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.18260/1-2-370-38561","url":null,"abstract":"The Department of Civil Engineering at the University of New Mexico is the only department in the United States to offer accredited BS degrees in Civil Engineering, Construction Engineering and Construction Management. In an attempt to better integrate the Engineering students and Management degree students as well as to seek new efficiency in teaching, the Construction Management students were required to take a 4 credit course that was previously required only of the Engineering students. The course on “ Civil Engineering Materials ” includes a significant laboratory component and was to become the only laboratory course taken by the Construction Management students in their 4-year curriculum. Starting Fall 2006, the prerequisites and course content were changed to accommodate the new clientele. The integration proved to be challenging partly due to the diverse academic background of the two cohorts of students (management and engineering). As the class progressed through the semester actions were taken to minimize the influence of these factors on student success. However, in spite of the corrective actions the final grades of the two groups showed distinct divergence. This prompted the authors to explore Kolb’s Learning Style Theory to investigate possible psychological variances among the two groups. The results of this study shows that the Engineering students tend to have a penchant for ‘Abstract Conceptualization’ over ‘Concreteness’, while Management students had a preference for ‘Active Experimentation’ over ‘Reflection’. The 33-110 servo system consists of 3 parts: Mechanical Unit, Analogue Unit and Digital Unit. The 150 servo system has a set of discrete units. The motor is a permanent magnet that is stationary and ideally proportional to the applied voltage when there is no load applied. The tachnogenerator is a small permanent magnet machine which rotates to produce a back EMF proportional to speed, which is used to indicate the rotation speed. The tachnogenerator provides a signal representing speed, independent of the motor loading. The responses of the motor to the varied inputs are not immediately observed which can be recognized as the time constant. Both systems can be used to analyze the stability of system responses. For example, it is a common practice to approximate specific volume, v(T, p), by saturated liquid specific volume, v f (T), the specific internal energy, u(T, p), by saturated liquid specific internal energy, u f (T), the specific entropy, s(T, p), by saturated liquid specific entropy, s f (T), and the specific enthalpy, h(T, p), by h f (T) + v f (T)[p-p sat (T)]. Errors resulting from these approximations will be analyzed in this paper. This paper will show that these approximations are not very accurate at all ranges of temperatures and pressures. The paper will establish limits on the range of pressures and temperatures that these approximations could be used with reasonable accuracies. The paper will also show that the approximations based on constant entropy yield much higher accurate results than those based on a constant temperature. For example, the approximation of u(s, p) by u f (s) is much more accurate that the approximation of u(T, p) by u f (T). Our novel approach is the utilization of hands-on experience in the field of nanotechnology in several undergraduate courses. The approach entails the introduction of “ Nanotechnology Discovery Courses ” that comprise of interlocking undergraduate Engineering Materials Science core courses enriched with nanotechnology. Friedman’s book “The World is Flat- A brief history of the twenty-first century” 1 . The fundamental issues are concerns regarding the large number of engineering (and science) graduates that are being produced by emerging economies such as China and India, and the consequences thereof to the increased off-shoring of technical jobs. Also at issue is the lack of national (United States) prioritization and investment in engineering and science education and research and fear that this trend would continue unabated and inevitably lead to a loss of US economic competitiveness. The book and its premise has become a rallying ground for engineering faculty and has served to coalesce some sense of urgency in allocating more resources to engineering fields. The purpose of this ‘paper’ is not to argue against the basic premise of the book, but to look more closely at the educational system of India as a way to better understand the trends of the past half century and the resulting complexity in economic terms. The discussions are also true of other emerging economies. The main campus of the University is in Edinburg, Texas, 15 miles from the U.S./Mexico border and 75 miles from the Gulf of Mexico. The total service population is two million approximately. The Hispanic Outlook in Higher Education lists UTPA among its top 100 best U.S. colleges for Hispanics. UTPA enrolls the highest number and highest percentage of Hispanics (86%) among Texas public universities. UTPA is the 10th largest university in the state and the fifth largest in the UT System. Retention and recruitment are important tools in solving both university enrollment levels and supplying industry with capable professionals.
