ABG crystals can be thought of as the mechanical analogues of semiconductors. In a semiconductor the electronic bandgap arises as the result of a periodic array in electronic potentials. In an ABG crystal a sonic bandgap arises as the result of a periodic array of differing acoustic impedances. We suggest that acoustic bandgap crystals can be used as sensors to detect and quantify submicron damage in substrates by monitoring changes in their acoustic response. More interestingly, is the scalability of the proposed sensors as acoustic bandgaps can be observed in both low-audible frequencies (e.g. seismic waves) and terahertz frequencies (e.g. phonon waves). This article presents the ability of an ABG sensor made of an epoxy matrix loaded with Tungsten scatterers to detect and quantify submicron damage in composite material substrates adhered to the ABG sensor. A finite element simulation, coupled with acoustic wave analysis using finite difference in time domain, is used to present the ability of ABG crystals to be employed as submicron sensors.","PeriodicalId":315415,"journal":{"name":"2008 GSW Proceedings","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133328292","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The integrated lecture/laboratory digital systems design course in the Department of Engineering Technology at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock is no exception. Programmable logic was first introduced to this course in the late 1990’s, with the hardware consisting of simple Programmable Logic Devices (PLDs) and Complex PLDs (CPLDs). VHDL (Very high speed integrated circuit Hardware Description Language) was selected as the programming language. This worked well, with students programming their chips and incorporating them in circuits. The course was upgraded several years ago to use Altera chips and the Quartus II development platform, because the software from Cypress semiconductor, which was used previously, no longer had the desired level of support. Microcontrollers are typically not included in a digital systems design course, however for many digital applications microcontrollers provide a very cost effective solution in a compact package. This paper examines the tradeoffs and suitability of CPLDs, Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), microcontrollers, and their associated software for digital applications typically taught in a digital design course in an engineering technology program.","PeriodicalId":315415,"journal":{"name":"2008 GSW Proceedings","volume":"210 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133196542","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Heat transfer textbooks commonly provide a brief coverage of heat exchangers, which contain detailed heat transfer analysis for parallel-flow and counter-flow heat exchangers. For some of the more complex flow patterns, charts are included in the textbooks to be used in solving heat exchanger problems. The accuracy of solutions is highly dependent on how precise one can read the charts, but also in problems requiring several stages of iteration, the process could become extremely tedious. Use of computer software programs increases the accuracy and eases the task of solving problems involving repeated calculations. Excel is one of the tools that can be used in solving heat exchanger problems. It is simple to use and usually available on almost all desktop or laptop computers. This paper demonstrates how Excel can be used in solving heat exchanger problems. Formulas are provided for replacing charts in solving heat exchanger problems. Several examples are included to demonstrate the application of Excel in heat exchanger analysis and design.","PeriodicalId":315415,"journal":{"name":"2008 GSW Proceedings","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114974806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given that our students come with a diverse background in mathematics and programming, our course has two fundamental goals. Firstly, we introduce two high-level computer programming languages suitable for math-intensive engineering studies, i.e., Matlab and Mathematica, in an effort to develop critical thinking and ensuring that students are able to work through complex problems without getting lost in syntax and programming style. The second focus of the course is to use these languages to construct and analyze computationally intensive problems tackled by BME researchers for cutting-edge research. To achieve this goal, all of our modules and homeworks are based on research problems currently of BME faculty in our department. This approach not only gets students excited about programming and proficient, it also proves beneficial to the faculty in getting fresh ideas about their current problems. Our presentation will highlight the results of monthly student surveys and end-of-term analysis along with challenges in teaching such an integrated course to students with little or no formal training in linear algebra and numerical methods.","PeriodicalId":315415,"journal":{"name":"2008 GSW Proceedings","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128730296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Design as a pedagogical approach was used to deliver STEM related content. Courses were developed to train technology teachers in skills and techniques which will help middle and high school level students pass rigorous pre-engineering courses. One notable objective of this initiative was to provide teachers with curricular content and design based activities that enable engineering relevant learning in the classroom at a low to moderate cost. Three hundred seventy seven teachers took part in the six week summer program at 7 sites spanning the state of New York. Over 25 instructors from seven different states in the U.S., Canada, and England, and six different colleges and universities developed and conducted the courses. The six separately delivered course content areas included Digital Electronics & Control Systems, Engineering & Technology, Engineering & Prototyping, Biotechnology & Bioengineering, and Design & Innovation. Pre and post program surveys were given to all participants. Based on responses, the EoF program has impacted an estimated 27,556 New York State students, of which 40% were female (11,098) and 60% male (16,458). The analysis also shows, with a level of significance of 0.05, that post EoF program participants are now more confident in regards to delivering rigorous pre-engineering curricula in their classrooms, aligning the curricula with state standards, and implementing EoF content in their future classes. use hands-on learning","PeriodicalId":315415,"journal":{"name":"2008 GSW Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129674268","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this course, students are required to work on two projects during the semester: 1) the design of a wide area network for a fictitious company with four locations with their respective local area networks and 2) the design of a voice over IP solution for the same company. For both projects, students use the CoT test bed, a telecommunications network used by CoT and AT&T for training and research. To prepare the students for these subsequent projects, we utilize an educational model that includes: theory through lectures leading to projects, presentations of infrastructure and technologies in class by the telecommunications network manager, demonstrations of and experimentation with the infrastructure and technologies by network manager with teams of two students, a research and design phase when teams bring their projects to the lecturer for approval and corrections leading to the final report and presentation of their designs. We have found that our project-based learning method to be very effective in teaching students about Telecommunications since we first implemented it two years ago. Most students complete the requirements and succeed in learning about the technologies presented in class. This method has begun to be implemented in other courses in the CoT such as data communications and computer networking.","PeriodicalId":315415,"journal":{"name":"2008 GSW Proceedings","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126817687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently these are called Hire-A-Bear Career Fairs, with over 100 organizations represented. Interview-practice and resume-preparation workshops and services, and other career counseling resources are promoted throughout the academic year, including on-line resume uploading and interview signup sites. The Career Services Office grew out of Baylor’s Business School and the fairs have historically had a prominent presence of companies seeking students with business majors. Baylor also has a strong School of Education and school districts are invited to participate in a separate Education Fair. Other specialty fairs are targeted toward student athletes, non-profit organizations, and Greater Waco companies. A large percentage of Baylor students major in the liberal and fine arts and as is a common approach elsewhere the fairs have responded to this student segment using general approaches. Baylor’s School of Engineering and Computer Science (ECS) is a small and young addition to Baylor’s undergraduate academic constellation. For more than a decade a frequent complaint by Baylor ECS students has been that the Office of Career Services and the Career Fairs had little to offer them. Major within this was the lack of companies at career fairs specifically seeking ECS majors. Conversations with Career Services staff ratified some of these observation and overtures to work together to better serve the needs of ECS graduates were initially thwarted. More recently, an emerging partnership is developing that includes a Science Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)-specific Career Fair, and other ECS-targeted activities, with other improvements and services on the horizon.","PeriodicalId":315415,"journal":{"name":"2008 GSW Proceedings","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131637701","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Watching the price of energy skyrocket, in particular electricity and gasoline, seems to elicit disapproval of the price increases but little more. America has become indifferent to energy issues and continues to pay the higher prices without much thought. This paper will begin by examining the state of the general public concerning energy and its lack of energy literacy. Most people have not begun to understand the complex nature of the energy challenge. Poor energy literacy led the authors to submit a proposal to a local foundation in 2006 to develop an “Energy Room” at the Mayborn Museum on the Baylor University campus. The current format of the capstone class has been in place since 2004. From the beginning, it has been necessary to study various factors that impact student academic performance and learning to ensure that the course is fulfilling its educational responsibilities. A key component of this evaluative process has been the development and implementation of a multi-faceted assessment plan. The paper provides an exploratory analysis of the most recent assessment instruments used to evaluate each student and team in the class from fall 2006, spring 2007, and fall 2007. Using multiple-regression modeling, we examine the predictive effectiveness of intermediate assessment tools (e.g. midterms, project proposals) in terms of summative course outcomes. While assessment tools in fall 2006 and fall 2007 generally functioned as appropriate predictors, the specific variables varied slightly. However, the effectiveness of assessments in spring 2007 was tenuous. The paper concludes by discussing the implications of the results as well as outlining next steps in the assessment process for the course.","PeriodicalId":315415,"journal":{"name":"2008 GSW Proceedings","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132919237","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
