Use of auxiliary wind propulsion is a natural choice as wind is free, globally available, and it is provided “on-site” instead of having to be transported with the ship from the port. Norsepower has modernised the Flettner rotor concept to obtain a highly efficient and robust solution to utilize the propulsive potential of the wind. Norsepower Rotor Sails harness the wind to provide a clean source of propulsion for various ship types. This paper addresses the need and means to provide the shipping market with verified information on the obtained savings with Rotor Sails. The paper also reviews the experiences of recent installations and finally provides an outlook of the global wind propulsion potential with respect to the busiest shipping routes.","PeriodicalId":313785,"journal":{"name":"Power & Propulsion Alternatives for Ships 2019","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132694205","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
{"title":"Towards Electrification of Ro-Ro Passenger Fleet in the Adriatic Sea","authors":"M. Perčić, I. Ančić, N. Vladimir","doi":"10.3940/RINA.PPA.2019.06","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3940/RINA.PPA.2019.06","url":null,"abstract":"With the recent introduction of new requirements for ships energy efficiency, as well as continuous rise of fuel price, there is a growing interest by many shipyards and shipowners to reduce fuel oil consumption. This is particularly important for ro-ro passenger ships in the Adriatic Sea. Various innovative energy efficient technologies could be implemented for these ships in order to reduce their environmental footprint. In this paper the viability to electrify these ships is analysed. This was done by analysing the energy efficiency of the current fleet, including the estimation of the fuel oil consumption and the analysis of ferry routes in the Adriatic Sea, as well as the number of passengers and vehicles transported. Based on this analysis, it is concluded that the electrification of the ro-ro passenger fleet in the Adriatic Sea could be considered as a viable option in the future.","PeriodicalId":313785,"journal":{"name":"Power & Propulsion Alternatives for Ships 2019","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-01-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130122518","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
