The square is a manifestation of public space, an integral part of the spatial layout of the royal capital. This concept was later adopted by cities in Indonesia, which provides an open space right in front of the palace or government office. Public squares as public spaces can play various roles in enhancing the quality of urban life, especially to express the social economic and environmental values. This paper aims to solely focus on the northern town square located inside the palace complex, especially by addressing the Islamic values of the northern town square of the Yogyakarta Sultanate using qualitative approaches in terms of its social economic and environmental aspects. Primary data were directly obtained from the research location by taking some photographs, field observation, and notes, while secondary data were derived from the literature and the Internet. The research suggests that the northern town square serves as the symbol and manifestation of not only the media to relate mankind to God but also the media to relate mankind to nature. In terms of mankind-to-God relation, the northern town square serves as a place for Eid prayers every year, including the Eid Fitr and the Eid Adha. Also, some annual events like the Sekaten are held every year to commemorate the birth of the Prophet Muhammad. The Sekaten Fun Fair to celebrate the birth of the Prophet highlights the Islamic values related to social economic and tourism activities. In the context of northern town square landscape, the element of 64-banyan trees around the northern town square symbolizes the age of the Prophet Muhammad. This tree concept has been successfully protected the environment around the northern town square and serves as a public open space in the city of Yogyakarta.","PeriodicalId":31237,"journal":{"name":"Tataloka","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46338472","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Tembalang is a sub-district with a population growth of 3.69%. The trend in population growth is used to build gated homes, for middle and upper class individuals who need more comfortable, secure, quiet housing. However, the existence of a gated community makes a physical separation between community settlements. Privatization of public spaces in gated housing potentially leads to social inequality and lack of interaction with the surrounding community. The purpose of this study was to examine the social relations between the villagers around housing and residents of the gated community. The study uses questionnaires and open interviews interviews with 93 respondents from Kampong Gendong and a hierarchical analysis to examine social relations. The results show that there are social relations between gated housing residents and villagers based on residence, and they carry out several activities together. Also, housing typology influences the strength of the interaction between villagers and residents of the gated homes. In general, gated housing appear as a form of exclusive property with separate environmental facilities, which might be used by villagers to strengthen social interaction. The relations with the surrounding community play n important role in increasing the sense of security for residents of gated housing, unlike the use of perimeter fence or the guards.","PeriodicalId":31237,"journal":{"name":"Tataloka","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-05-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"44736754","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It was revealed that the community tourism objects of the Malang Regency had not played an active role in the development of local attractions. In Ngadas Village itself, the community already knew their identity as a tourism village. However, the involvement and participation of the community in the development process has not been optimal. The level of participation was measured using eight stages of Arnstein's participation, divided into four stages of participation; planning phase, implementation phase, phase of use and monitoring phase. The results indicate that the level of community participation in the traditional Ngadas tourism village is still the third of eight stages in Arnstein's participation. Characteristics of the third ladder, named informing are where the community is passively involved by only being informed about the activities and the plans to be carried out, which have been decided before. Opinions and ideas from the community are not being a consideration that can influence the decisions.","PeriodicalId":31237,"journal":{"name":"Tataloka","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-11-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"49369617","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The keyword ‘nonfigurative’ is used because this approach is focused on creating connections and relationship rather than a physical building. Two other keywords are also used to support it. ‘Contextual’ means that history, spirit of place (genius loci), and existing set of rules given by the existing building are the key starting point while ‘flexible’ means that the product of this approach must have the ability to respond to the ever-changing needs of a city. Nowadays, buildings are left obsolete far earlier that its life span initially assumed. This situation often leaves us with ruins in the landscape or even in the middle of our city. In the era of uncertainty where city evolves swiftly due to the rapid changes of economy, policy, and technology, we believe that a nonfigurative approach is a sustainable way to respond to this problem. It will be able to maximize the unexplored potential of an obsolete or even an abandoned building, and equip them with the ability to evolve along with the city.","PeriodicalId":31237,"journal":{"name":"Tataloka","volume":" ","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43838398","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) becomes one of the SC characteristic which transformed into applications and websites. The main purpose of the research is to map the categorization of SC dimension based on the abundance of aplications and web sites for cities management. The explorative and qualitative approach was used as research method involving secondary data collection, categorization scheme, and pairing to Giffinger’s SC dimensions. About 338 SC’s innovation accounted from cities in Indonesia but only 109 registered as applications or websites. From those numbers, we then categorize into 14 typologies of applications/websites based on its methods in tackling urban problems. They are job related information, transport and traffic, education, citizen participation, environmental management, governance, bureaucracy/permission, staffing, health, energy management, disaster mitigation, criminality, entrepreneurship, and culture and tourism. As result, those categorizations are, in fact, more comprehensive than those of Giffinger’s six smart city dimensions by adding two more dimensions namely Smart Energy Management and Smart Disaster Mitigation. Despite the availability of the applications and websites related to them, the implementation is still limited. ","PeriodicalId":31237,"journal":{"name":"Tataloka","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67039003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
