This backward placement of mandible pushes the tongue posteriorly and inturn impairs the position of hyoid bone and total tongue area. Correction of retruded mandible with functional appliances is also considered to have positive effect on hyoid bone position and tongue area. Aim and Objectives: The objective of this study was to evaluate and compare the effects of Twin Block and Forsus on the hyoid bone position and tongue area in the treatment of Class II division 1 malocclusion. Materials & Method: A 2-arm parallel, randomized controlled trial was designed consisting of 24 Class II division 1 malocclusion patients indicated for treatment with functional appliances. 24 patients were randomized and equally divided among Twin Block (Group A) and Forsus (Group B) group. Preand post functional lateral cephalograms of both groups were traced and statistically analysed using paired t-test and T test of Equality of Means. ‘p’ value of less than 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Result: A significantly upward and forward movement of hyoid bone was found with both the appliances. Tongue area also improved with Twin Block and Forsus group. On intergroup comparison insignificant results were observed between both the appliances indicating similar effect on tongue area and hyoid bone position. Conclusion: Twin Block has more skeletal effect than Forsus, still both Twin Block and Forsus are effective in improving tongue area and forward and upward displacement of hyoid bone position while correcting Class II malocclusion.","PeriodicalId":31197,"journal":{"name":"Orthodontic Journal of Nepal","volume":"10 1","pages":"55-64"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3126/ojn.v10i1.31006","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43893635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the conflicting results in the literature, mainly related to the classification of patients according to vertical characteristics, creates a challenge for the clinician in determining the characteristic inclinations of teeth in a specific patient. The objective of this study was to find out dental inclination and thickness of the alveolar bone around incisors and molars in different facial type. Materials & Method: The sample included 51 CBCT radiographs (28 females and 23 males) and subdivided into three subgroups according to vertical facial skeletal pattern (22 normodivergent subjects, 06 hypodivergent subjects and 23 hyperdivergent subjects). Reformatted CBCT images were used to measure the thickness of the vestibular and lingual alveolar bone around the incisors and first molars at two levels of root length (apical and middle) and their inclination. The Kruskal-Wallis test for the comparison of more than 2 means was applied for statistical analysis. Result: Alveolar bone thickness in the apical region of the lingual side in hyperdivergent subjects was thicker than in the other two groups. The bone wall is thicker in the lingual than in the vestibular, regardless of the vertical skeletal typology. These varied inclinations were more pronounced anterior sector. Conclusion: Dental inclinations have close relationships with the alveolar bone thicknesses associated with them. The apex of the root of the lower incisor is closer to the lingual alveolar crest when it was inclined in the lingual direction. There is a significant association between bone thickness around the teeth and facial skeletal divergence.","PeriodicalId":31197,"journal":{"name":"Orthodontic Journal of Nepal","volume":"10 1","pages":"27-31"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"43236206","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Maxillary lateral incisor is also the most common varying tooth in form than any other tooth. The objective of the study is to estimate the prevalence of congenitally missing maxillary lateral incisors and peg laterals in patients receiving orthodontic treatment. Materials & Method: This is a cross sectional retrospective study carried out among 204 orthodontic patients. Panoramic radiographs taken during the diagnostic procedure of orthodontic treatment was used to confirm the presence or absence of lateral incisors. The presence of peg laterals was determined by dental casts. Result: Prevalence of missing maxillary lateral incisors and peg laterals was found 2.5% and 3.9% respectively. Prevalence of missing lateral in male was 5.7% while among female no missing laterals were observed. Prevalence of peg laterals in male and female was 1.1% and 6% respectively. Among the missing lateral incisors, prevalence of bilaterally missing lateral incisors was 60% while prevalence of both right and left unilateral missing laterals was 20%. Among the peg laterals, bilateral peg laterals were present in 50% patients, followed by left unilateral 37.5% and right unilateral 12.5% peg laterals. Conclusion: The present study shows higher prevalence of peg laterals than missing lateral incisors. Prevalence of missing lateral incisors was higher in male and prevalence of peg laterals was higher in female. Prevalence of bilaterally missing laterals and bilateral peg laterals was higher than unilateral presentation.","PeriodicalId":31197,"journal":{"name":"Orthodontic Journal of Nepal","volume":"10 1","pages":"17-20"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46591296","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Canines are important for esthetics and function as they are located in the anterior segment of the mouth and help in tearing of food. An impacted tooth is that tooth that cannot or will not erupt into its normal functional occlusion due to some circumstances. Those impacted tooth are considered pathologic as they might lead to various problems like resorption of roots of adjacent teeth, cystic formation, and infection with partial eruption leading to pain and trismus. Materials & Method: All the patients (550) being treated in department of Orthodontics in Nepal Medical College from January 2017 to December 2019 were included in the study. Patients aged 13-30 years were included in the study. Clinical examinations and panoramic radiographs of patients were taken. Anterior occlusal view was done in those patients having canine impaction to determine the patterns of impaction. Data was processed in SPSS version 16.0. Result: Among 550 orthodontic patients, 31 patients were found to have canine impaction. Among them 18 (58.1%) were females and 13 (41.9%) were males. The overall prevalence of canine impaction was found to be 5.6%. Various dental anomalies were observed in the participants’ radiographs, the most common being the retained deciduous teeth (54.8%) followed by dilacerations of adjacent teeth (51.6%). Peg shaped lateral incisors and root resorption of adjacent tooth were almost equal (22.6%) with least being the odontomas and other impacted teeth. Conclusion: The prevalence of canine impaction in tertiary care dental hospital in Kathmandu was found to be 5.6%. Patients with impacted canines also had other dental anomalies. Knowing the prevalence of impacted canines, will encourage the community to be aware about canine impaction and educate the population about the clinical implications and the importance of performing preventive and interceptive procedures.","PeriodicalId":31197,"journal":{"name":"Orthodontic Journal of Nepal","volume":"10 1","pages":"6-10"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42873651","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The electronic databases of Medline, PubMed and Cochrane library were systematically searched until September 2019. The human studies that had used the conventional Twin block appliance with a control group evaluated by a Lateral Cephalogram were included. A total of 321 articles were examined. 10 articles were selected. Majority studies reported a significant improvement in the mandible and in the vertical height, maxillary restrictive effect was less consistently reported. A restrictive maxillary molar effect and an advancement in the mandibular molar has been suggested. Retroclination of the maxillary incisors and proclination of mandibular incisor inclination has been reported. There is some evidence to suggest a retrusive upper lip effect and a protrusive lower lip effect. Increase in Nasolabial angle and some decrease in the mentolabial sulcus to be expected. In conclusion the conventional Twin Block appliance have shown desirable skeletal, dental and soft tissue effects. However certain inevitable side effects are also seen mainly its effect on lower anterior proclination.","PeriodicalId":31197,"journal":{"name":"Orthodontic Journal of Nepal","volume":"10 1","pages":"65-72"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-09-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"https://sci-hub-pdf.com/10.3126/ojn.v10i1.31007","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45063013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
