Clustering infrastructure which allows efficient use of available resource has great potential in solving the problems of resource limited wireless sensor network. Attempts are made in this paper to propose a new routing algorithm that have been named as Hierarchical LEACH (H-LEACH) and Hierarchical LEACH-DT (H-LEACH-DT) which are basically hierarchical extensions of existing LEACH and LEACH-DT protocols respectively. Further simulation based performance evaluation of the proposed two schemes has been compared with LEACH and LEACH-DT protocols. The outcome of the paper suggest that hierarchical routing protocols perform much better than LEACH and LEACH-DT protocols which will ultimately lead to improvement of the lifetime of the WSN.","PeriodicalId":311953,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Grid Computing","volume":"107 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124792794","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Compared to balanced and unbalanced power control schemes adopted by 3rd Generation Partnership Program (3GPP) in downlink direction proposed power control scheme during soft handoff reduces the additional interference caused by multiple site transmission and minimizes the overall transmitted power, thus increases the downlink capacity but compromises in the macro-diversity gain due to soft handoff. The proposed scheme is particularly suitable in the environments which face poor propagation attenuation.","PeriodicalId":311953,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Grid Computing","volume":"7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121908975","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recognition of scene text is a challenging problem compared to the recognition of printed documents. In this work a novel approach is proposed to recognize text in complex background natural scene, word formation from recognized text, spelling checking and word translation into user defined language and finally overlay translated word onto the image. The proposed approach is robust to different kinds of text appearances, including font size, font style, color, and background. Combining the respective strengths of different complementary techniques and overcoming their shortcomings, the proposed method uses efficient character detection and localization technique and multiclass classifier to recognize the text accurately. The proposed approach successfully recognizes text on natural scene images and does not depend on a particular alphabet, text background. It works with a wide variety in size of characters and can handle up to 20 degree skewness efficiently.","PeriodicalId":311953,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Grid Computing","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132027707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Selection of coordinator node in distributed environment plays an important role in the system performance. In the real world, it is not possible that the coordinator node is always available because of some failure occur sometimes it get crashed, out of service. In literature various approaches have been proposed in order to conduct an election mechanism when coordinator node gets crashed. Although these approaches provide different techniques to conduct elections and also to minimize the number of messages required. But these approaches have some drawbacks such as wastage of network bandwidth In order to overpower these drawbacks we proposed an algorithm for Coordinator selection that is used in the centralized distributed system. This gives a better performance than bully algorithm and the other existing proposed algorithm for coordinator selection. Our algorithm selects a coordinator in O (n) time as well as it handles the failure of nodes in less number of message exchange the message is O (n) message but practically it is very lower than O(n).","PeriodicalId":311953,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Grid Computing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131321441","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Live migration techniques of Virtual Machine (VM) can be useful for load balancing, energy efficiency and fault tolerance. Xen hypervisor is widely used in virtualization for its better performance and integration with different architectures. In this paper, the pre-copy approach of Xen is evaluated for Live Migration of virtual machines. The Framework of Xen-4.1 based pre-copy is configured using DRBD (Distributed Replicated Block Device) on Intel-VT architecture to get a practical understanding of the algorithm. Xen's pre-copy can have better results in terms of performance metrics-downtime, total transfer time, total pages transferred if bitmap structure and writable working set are improved. For avoiding repeated retransmission of memory pages, techniques based on prediction are used to get information about dirty pages. Prediction based two different techniques are discussed: i) LRU Stack Distance ii) Probability Prediction. Memory Compression, a faster migration technique, is the second step of a combined approach. Various compression methods named RLE, Huffman Coding, MEMCOM, WKdm and LZ are classified. Prediction and compression based combined approach is surveyed to improve pre-copy for efficient live memory migration on Xen.","PeriodicalId":311953,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Grid Computing","volume":"172 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133745048","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mitochondria and synapses are two prominent and important structures with neurological interest that play an important role in neural functionality. Manual segmentation of these structures in EM images by an expert neuroanatomist is a very tedious and error prone job. In this paper comparison of different feature sets based on Local Binary Patterns (LBP) and Gabor Filters for automatically performing this task are presented. In this study result analysis uses a random forest classifier and Jaccard index and ROC curve as comparative measures. A combination of Gabor filters and LBP features extracted from Gabor filtered images produce the best segmentation result.","PeriodicalId":311953,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Grid Computing","volume":"190 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133729027","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Virtualization technologies are used in the clouds to aid the efficient usage of hardware. Virtual machines are utilized to satisfy the user needs and are placed on physical machines of the cloud for effective usage of hardware resources and electricity. Optimizing the number of physical machines used helps in cutting down the power consumption by substantial amount. An optimal technique is to map virtual machines to physical machines such that the number of required physical machines is minimized. The Virtual Machine Placement problem with the target of minimizing the total energy consumption by running physical machines is an indication of increasing resource utilization and reducing cost of a data center. Virtual Machine Migration is another approach to minimize the total energy consumption and to increase resource utilization. Due to the multiple dimensionality of physical resources, there always exists a waste of resources, which results from the imbalanced use of multi-dimensional resources. Migration support can balance the utilization of multi-dimensional resources, reduce the number of running physical machines and thus lower the energy consumption. In this paper, we present a platform to test different Virtual Machine Placement and Virtual Machine Migration algorithms on real time scenarios (Cloud) and enable them to conduct different experiments. For this purpose, OpenStack private cloud is suggested as private cloud environment and OpenStack Neat is used to provide dynamic Virtual Machine Migration. Here, we have integrated OpenStack Neat with OpenStack Cloud and shown the experiment of dynamic Virtual Machine Migration in real time.","PeriodicalId":311953,"journal":{"name":"2014 International Conference on Parallel, Distributed and Grid Computing","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133410686","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Particularly, the new evolving threat to the enterprise cloud makes the firewall systems of enterprise cloud to slow down the operation. On the other hand, one of the central challenges to deploy, Cloud applications into the existing environment is to configure the Cloud firewalls. The state of art technology is to open the ports as many as required. Such firewall policy is so hazardous, and a more dynamic means of checking the firewall is called for. Adaptability in transaction oriented grid service is a challenge due to the extreme complexity and the occurrence of failures in the grid system. This paper presents the design, implementation, and evaluation of an adaptive model, ATOGS, using adaptive fault-tolerance (i.e., checkpointing and replication) during the execution of services. We evaluate our adaptive model experimentally comparing with the Dynasa and the experimental results have demonstrated that ATOGS enables the application itself to handle the failure problems efficiently and it achieves better performance in terms of execution time, network bandwidth, load, resulting in up to a lower overhead. The results indicate that the performance of transaction oriented grid service is better than the performance of general grid service when replication technique is used.
