While fieldwork has gradually evolved into standard practice in IR research, the question of possible failures in field-based knowledge production remains conspicuously absent from both graduate training and writing in IR. This volume fills that lacuna by engaging with fieldwork as a site of knowledge production and inevitable failure. It develops methodological discussions in IR in two novel ways. First, it engages failure through experience-near and practice-based perspectives, with authors speaking from their experiences. And secondly, it delves into the politics of methods in IR and the discipline more generally to probe ways in which the realities of research condition scholarly claims.","PeriodicalId":311735,"journal":{"name":"Czech Journal of International Relations","volume":"414 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115918158","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As thepandemic advances, it seems that the prediction of populism surviving thepandemic due to its own diversity has been proved right, given thevariation in responses by populists around the world. One commondenominator stands out though: populists across the political spectrumunderstood the benefits of performing the Covid-19 crisis as a tool tostrengthen their political positions. They tried to politicize the pandemic toincrease the antagonism between the people and the elites. In this article, Iintroduce the notion of crisis as both a construct and a performance, and asa useful concept to analyze populist reactions to the pandemic. I argue thatnotwithstanding the attempts to politicize the pandemic, the Covid-19 crisisended up imposing its own reality. In other words: the crisis could not beowned by politics.","PeriodicalId":311735,"journal":{"name":"Czech Journal of International Relations","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121369342","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To really achieve change, we must go so muchfurther.As the world becomes seemingly more uncaring, the calls for people to bemore compassionate and empathetic towards one another—in short, tocare more—become ever-more vocal. The Care Crisis challenges the ideathat people ever stopped caring, but also that the deep and multi-facetedcrises of our time will be solved by simply (re)instilling the virtues ofempathy. There is no easy fix.In this groundbreaking book, Emma Dowling charts the multi-facetednature of care in the modern world, from the mantras of self-care and whatthey tell us about our anxieties, to the state of the social care system. Sheexamines the relations of power that play profitability and care off inagainst one another in a myriad of ways, exposing the devastating impactof financialisation and austerity.The Care Crisis enquires into the ways in which the continued off-loading ofthe cost of care onto the shoulders of underpaid and unpaid realms ofsociety, untangling how this off-loading combines with commodification,marketisation and financialisation to produce the mess we are living in. TheCare Crisis charts the current experiments in short-term fixes to the carecrisis that are taking place within Britain, with austerity as the backdrop. Itmaps the economy of abandonment, raising the question: to whom care isafforded? What would it mean to seriously value care?","PeriodicalId":311735,"journal":{"name":"Czech Journal of International Relations","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133682852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The authors argue that for Russia, Sputnik V promotionwas significant both as a business project and as a political enterprise, as itwas supposed to enhance Russia’s international status and help it inovercoming its post-Crimea isolation from the West. The results weremixed, however, as Russia’s international credibility had been underminedby its previous policies. Thus, in Hungary the vaccine managed to gainsome traction thanks to a government that preferred importing non-EUcertified vaccines as part of its larger policy of fostering closer ties with theauthoritarian great powers in Eurasia. In Slovakia, the vaccine deal withRussia caused a political crisis but eventually resulted in a very poorperformance of Sputnik V as compared to EU-certified vaccines.","PeriodicalId":311735,"journal":{"name":"Czech Journal of International Relations","volume":"247 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115221963","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

How can we make sense – analytically and politically– of this newlypoliticized nexus of public health, information management, and globalsecurity? This article proposes approaching the phenomenon of theinfodemic as an intersecting securitization of information disorder andhealth governance. Specifically, it argues that there are two distinct framesof security mobilized in the context of infodemic governance: informationas a disease and information as a weapon. Drawing on literatures on globalhealth and the emerging research on disinformation, the paper situates thetwo framings of the infodemic in broader discourses on the medicalizationof security, and securitization of information disorder, respectively. Thearticle critically reflects on each framing and offers some preliminarythoughts on how to approach the entanglements of health, security, andinformation disorder in contemporary global politics.","PeriodicalId":311735,"journal":{"name":"Czech Journal of International Relations","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130768639","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It argues that theanalysis of these interactions can reveal NATO’s strategic approach topartnerships, but it can also provide a tool for its classification as anorganisation that is either exclusive – defined by the focus on defence of itsmembers, or inclusive – emphasising the global protection of democraciesand human rights. The relationship between types of interactions and NATOcategorisation is estimated using an unconditional negative binomialregression with fixed effects as well as a within-between (hybrid) model.Furthermore, they are illustrated on two brief case studies of Sweden andJapan. The results of the study suggest that NATO engages primarily withcountries that are powerful relative to their neighbourhood, even thoughthey are not the most powerful among the partners. The given country’slevel of democracy, integration into the international institutions, andstability, do not seem to play any overarching role here.","PeriodicalId":311735,"journal":{"name":"Czech Journal of International Relations","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123884604","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Forty years later the hope of producing a benignPeople's Republic of China utterly failed. The Communist Party of Chinadeceived the West into believing that the its system and the Party-ruledPeople's Liberation Army were peaceful and posed no threat. In fact, thesemisguided policies produced the emergence of a 21st Century Evil Empireeven more dangerous than a Cold War version in the Soviet Union.Successive American presidential administrations were fooled by ill-advisedpro-China policymakers, intelligence analysts and business leaders whofacilitated the rise not of a peaceful China but a threatening andexpansionist nuclear-armed communist dictatorship not focused on asingle overriding strategic objective: Weakening and destroying the UnitedStates of America. Defeating the United States is the first step for China'scurrent rulers in achieving global supremacy under a new world orderbased an ideology of Communism with Chinese characteristics. The processincluded technology theft of American companies that took place on amassive scale through cyber theft and unfair trade practices. The lossesdirectly supported in the largest and most significant buildup of theChinese military that now directly threatens American and allied interestsaround the world. The military threat is only half the danger as Chinaaggressively pursues regional and international control using a variety ofnon-military forces, including economic, cyber and space warfare and large-scale influence operations.","PeriodicalId":311735,"journal":{"name":"Czech Journal of International Relations","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133837643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This text is dedicated to its role in Russiaʼsforeign policy, specifically to the topic of the Russian interest in problemsand protection of Christians, which is one of the most essential parts of thecooperation between the state and the Church. Analyzing primary sources(state and Church documents), the author shows when and under whatcircumstances this topic became relevant to both actors, what role theRussian Orthodox Church played in this regard and how the topic ofprotecting Christians is used by the Russian regime today. The study showsthat the interest in protection of Christians did not arise simultaneously onboth sides and that it is connected mainly with situations where a threat forChristians is posed by unfriendly actors.","PeriodicalId":311735,"journal":{"name":"Czech Journal of International Relations","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116922583","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consideringdemocracy and diaspora through a deterritorialised lens, it takes the post-Euromaidan Ukraine as a central case study to show how modern diasporasare actively involved in shaping democracy from a distance, and throughtheir political activity are becoming increasingly democratised themselves.An examination of how power-sharing democracies function beyond theterritorial state, Democracy, Diaspora, Territory: Europe and Cross-BorderPolitics compels us to reassess what we mean by democracy and diasporatoday, and why we need to focus on the deterritorialised dimensions ofthese phenomena if we are to adequately address the crises confrontingnumerous democracies. As such, it will appeal to scholars of sociology andpolitics with interests in migration and diaspora, political theory, citizenshipand democracy.","PeriodicalId":311735,"journal":{"name":"Czech Journal of International Relations","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-09-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129720939","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
