However, their large array gain seems to be inaccessible in practice, for it tends to be all eaten up by a loss of efficiency that accompanies such super-gain effects. In this paper, the authors argue that the assertion given above is based on a less than optimum choice of antenna separation inside the array as well as on less than optimum antenna excitation currents. We demonstrate that if both those issues are addressed optimally super-gain actually can be obtained with high efficiency. Compact antenna arrays therefore deserve to be given more attention in both the antenna-, and the signal processing layers of abstraction, for the successful application of such arrays requires optimum design in both layers.","PeriodicalId":311394,"journal":{"name":"2010 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas (WSA)","volume":"86 9","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120987087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If the systems can exploit time interleaving long enough to cover a fading cycle, excellent error rate performance should be obtained in mobile line-of-sight (LOS) environments. This paper describes an iterative LDPC minimum mean square error with soft interference cancellation (LDPC-MMSE-SIC) receiver with a time de-interleaver before the MMSE detector and evaluates it using channel state information (CSI) acquired in outdoor measurements. We show that the iterative receiver with time interleaving improves the error rate performance significantly in mobile LOS environments and outperforms an LDPC maximum likelihood detection (LDPC-MLD) receiver with the same error correction and interleaving.","PeriodicalId":311394,"journal":{"name":"2010 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas (WSA)","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121809987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The prototypes are based on a size optimized planar inverted-F antenna (PIFA) element which applies a meander structure etched on the metallic patch. Anechoic and reverberation chamber measurements have verified that the simulated performance translates into the manufactured prototypes. The diversity performance of different prototypes is calculated and compared based on different statistical propagation models. Realistic outdoor MIMO transmission experiments at 2.68 GHz show their suitability for spatial multiplexing transmission.","PeriodicalId":311394,"journal":{"name":"2010 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas (WSA)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127204953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the transmitter either Transmit Antenna Selection (TAS) or Orthogonal Space Time Block Coding (OSTBC) is performed. In addition, Maximum Ratio Combining (MRC) is performed at each receiver side. A Weighted Proportional Fair Scheduling (WPFS) approach is applied using the different user priorities and the instantaneous Signal-to-Noise-Ratios (SNRs) of the corresponding equivalent Single Input Single Output (SISO) channels of the users as Channel Quality Information (CQI) to allocate the different subcarriers to the different users. These CQI values are assumed to be imperfect due to time delays and estimation errors. The joint impact of imperfect CQI and user priority on the system performance is analytically investigated for both transmission schemes. Numerical results show that serving users with different priorities comes at the expense of reduced system data rate and less robustness against imperfect CQI. Furthermore, it is beneficial to switch from TAS to OSTBC in scenarios for fast varying channels due to the additional exploitation of spatial diversity applying OSTBC.","PeriodicalId":311394,"journal":{"name":"2010 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas (WSA)","volume":"145 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123742044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, we propose a very general framework for computing the Average Bit Error Probability (ABEP) of SSK-MIMO systems over a generic Rician fading channel with arbitrary correlation and channel parameters. The framework relies upon the Moschopoulos method. We will show that it is exact for MIMO systems with two transmit-antennas and arbitrary receive-antennas, while an asymptotically-tight upper-bound is proposed to handle the system setup with an arbitrary number of transmit-antennas. Analytical frameworks and theoretical findings will be substantiated via Monte Carlo simulations for various system setups.","PeriodicalId":311394,"journal":{"name":"2010 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas (WSA)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126847446","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the real-world implementation of CoMP is linked with major challenges such as multi-cell synchronization and multi-cell channel estimation, which have to be addressed to make sure that CoMP finds its way into next generation cellular systems (e.g. LTE-Advanced). In this paper, we provide a proof-of-concept that uplink CoMP concepts do in fact yield significant spectral efficiency gains in an outdoor deployment of two cooperating base stations and two terminals. We further show that the performance gains of CoMP in various interference scenarios corresponds quite well with predictions from theory.","PeriodicalId":311394,"journal":{"name":"2010 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas (WSA)","volume":"78 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131427271","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast to conventional arrays, where the number of channels equals the number of sensors, we use tapered subarray structures. For this type of array, each channel consists of several sensor elements with different amplitude tapering. By this means, a pre-focussing can be achieved for angular regions, where targets are likely to appear. As a consequence, the DOA mean squared error in the corresponding regions is reduced. As the subarrays affect the statistical properties of the baseband signal model, we extend the well known definitions of the Maximum Likelihood DOA estimator and the Cramér-Rao bound (CRB). Furthermore, we present an expression for the ambiguity function for a single signal based on the Maximum Likelihood estimator. This function and the CRB are used to optimize the sensor geometry, subarray tapering and subarray configuration. As external conditions such as the range of possible DOA's, the DOA region of interest and the signal power range are also included in the optimization, the array can be adjusted to external requirements defined by a specific application and function. By this means, optimum (single source) DOA estimation performance for a specific area of application can be achieved. An evolution strategy is used for the optimization. To show the DOA estimation performance of the optimized arrays and to confirm the validity of the extended CRB, simulation results are presented. Compared to conventional arrays, the optimized tapered subarray structures provide a significantly better DOA accuracy.","PeriodicalId":311394,"journal":{"name":"2010 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas (WSA)","volume":"235 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115572896","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Joint transmission schemes are mentioned in [1] as an example of coordinated transmission between cells for the downlink. Here, data are transmitted simultaneously either coherently or non-coherently from multiple cells to a single mobile station. In this paper, a centralized MAC scheduling approach for joint transmission coordinated multi-point (JT CoMP) is proposed. Since several base stations transmit jointly to a single mobile station, the base stations are grouped together in so-called clusters. Several cluster strategies are investigated as well. The focus is on schemes that add only low complexity to the existing 3GPP LTE Release 8 system. Simulation results are provided for non-coherent transmission for full buffer and bursty traffic models with various system loads for different static cell clustering approaches.","PeriodicalId":311394,"journal":{"name":"2010 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas (WSA)","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131346642","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The PMI is required for MIMO precoding in the downlink of a 3GPP UMTS/LTE system. Our method is based on maximizing the mutual information between the transmitted and received symbols with respect to the precoding matrix applied at the transmitter. The advantage of this method is that it is independent of the symbol alphabet (4/16/64 QAM) and code rate applied, which are signaled by the channel quality indicator (CQI). Although this paper only focuses on the selection of the optimal PMI, such a procedure eventually allows to decouple both problems (CQI and PMI calculation), thereby reducing complexity. The proposed method also provides means to obtain the number of useful MIMO transmission layers, signaled in form of the Rank indicator (RI), by maximizing mutual information also with respect to this value. The performance of the method is evaluated utilizing an LTE downlink physical-layer simulator.","PeriodicalId":311394,"journal":{"name":"2010 International ITG Workshop on Smart Antennas (WSA)","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126779361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
