Currently, over 150,000 deaths occur worldwide every year due to global warming. In Kenya, climate change has had devastating effects. Communities in rural areas are often most affected by climate change impacts because they rely on climate-sensitive industries to earn a living.  To address this, the study examined the utilization of community radio as a key media platform with a wide audience in rural Kenya to promote climate change awareness. This study assessed community radio’s role in the dissemination of information and in public engagement on matters of climate change in rural Kenya specifically Migori County. The study used a mixed approach of both qualitative and quantitative to collect data. 401 questionnaires were administered to residents who listen to at least one of the five main Dholuo community radio stations in Migori County, Kenya. This population was calculated using Yamane’s formula from a total population of 811, 051 residents of  Rongo, Awendo, Uriri, Suna East, Suna West, and Nyatike sub-counties. The five major community radios in Migori under study included: Milambo, Anyuola, Tarumbeta, Onagi, and Rameny. 20 key informants drawn from the community radio stations and climate change experts were interviewed for qualitative data. The study revealed that community radios do not give prominence to serious issues of climate change apart from the effects that come as news stories. It is recommended therefore that relevant stakeholders should prioritize proper utilization of community radios on matters of climate change.","PeriodicalId":311378,"journal":{"name":"African Social Science and Humanities Journal","volume":"158 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122447890","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The secret of the high level of development witnessed in many developed nations in the world could be attributed to the success of their educational system, especially their University system. Among the various tertiary institutions, the effectiveness of the University system is essential in achieving national goals and objectives.  The major functions of the university are to inculcate sound and practicable knowledge, undertake research and involve in community development. The achievement of these seems to remain a tedious task in Nigeria. The study seeks to examine the role or place of the university system in Nigeria as an agent of social change and sustainable development. The study adopts the system theory as its theoretical framework. The research is a descriptive-analytical one and it draws qualitative data derived from secondary sources. The content analysis was used as a tool for data analysis. Findings from the study reveal that the universities in Nigeria are still lagging, compared to other world-class universities in the world and it has not played the expected role of being a catalyst of social change and sustainable development due to many challenges bedevilling the sector. This includes among others, inadequate funding, inadequate qualified academic staff, and inadequate and dilapidated infrastructure. The paper recommends among others synergy between the university system and other sectors of the economy, including the private sector, merit should be the basis for recruitment, promotion of staff, and appointment of the management staff of the university, a special funding mechanism through taxation of telecoms companies to fund the university. With this, Nigeria will achieve the desired development.","PeriodicalId":311378,"journal":{"name":"African Social Science and Humanities Journal","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134329606","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study sought to investigate the impacts of acceptance, lack of conversation and inheritance issues on relationship happiness among inter-and-intra ethnic relationships in the Kumasi Metropolis in the Ashanti Region, Ghana. The researchers used descriptive research survey design. The study employed a qualitative research approach. The data for the study were gathered from inter-and-intra ethnic spouses who are above 20 years of age, have been married for 2 years to 60 years and with an academic background of Junior High School (JHS) and above. Ten (10) couples were used for the study. Purposive and simple random sampling techniques were used to select the couples from the accessible population. Interviews were used to gather the data.  Thematic analysis was used to analyze the data. Major findings of the study revealed that couples in inter-ethnic and intra-ethnic relationships were not happy with respect to their children inheriting their parents. It was therefore, recommended that couples in inter- and intra- ethnic relationships should be schooled to prepare a Will whiles living with the assistance of religious leaders and counsellors. Further, properties acquired during their relationship should be recorded in the names of their children to prevent uncertainty and conflicts after they are dead when the state employs the implementation of PNDC Law 111, 1985 of Ghana. It was also found out that, couples in both inter- and intra-ethnic relationships chose a common medium of expression. It is recommended that, couples from different backgrounds should use a common language for better understanding and to do away with suspicions in the relationships to bring about marital happiness.","PeriodicalId":311378,"journal":{"name":"African Social Science and Humanities Journal","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-04-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124016962","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Despite different anti-corruption measures by nation-states, political evil continuously assumes a political culture. Kleptocracy consists of embezzling and stealing public funds and resources for selfish profits (consumption and glorification). In Nigeria particularly the fourth republic, political offices have turned to channels for unchecking sources of riches to both oneself and family members. Political elites take turn engaging in siphoning, embezzling, stealing, looting, and diverting public funds which create a kind of political culture where feeding fat on the states’ treasuries become the order of the day. This significantly results in an economic mess, underdevelopment, unimaginable sufferings and a thriving environment for penuries, particularly in Nigeria. To achieve the purpose of this study, interpretivism approach was used to analyse previous literature on the meaning, features and consequences of kleptocracy in society. The incidences of embezzlement and looting of public resources of the fourth Nigerian republic were investigated. The study finds that kleptocracy is politically evil because it undermines human dignity by recreating poverty and corruption. It recommends that to eradicate the practice from Nigerian politics, honest yearly assets declarations should form a bedrock for every public officeholder.","PeriodicalId":311378,"journal":{"name":"African Social Science and Humanities Journal","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127551792","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose of this study is to interrogate the significance of contemporary African philosophy and literary discourses for the stimulation of technological development in Africa and to assert that no society can develop or advance without thinkers, as science has no basis without philosophy. The expository and prescriptive methods were adopted in this study. Through the expository analysis, the discourse reveals that African philosophy and thinkers are most (generally) abstract and abstract and baseless philosophy is a liability rather than an asset; therefore inimical to tech development. Against this backdrop, it behooves to ask, as far as the global race for tech advancement is concerned, where does Africa stand? Of what relevance is African philosophy to African's quest for tech development? How may mother Africa liberate her offspring from tech stagnation and subsequently assert herself in the global village driven by science and technology through her sons and daughters’ intellectual ingenuity? Based on the findings of this critical analysis, the treatise concludes that the ideal object and teleology of the contemporary African philosophy ought to be the postulation of pragmatic ideologies that are germane for advancing Africa’s sustainable development of science and technology. The study therefore recommends that contemporary African philosophy has no business with abstract, ossified and baseless speculations for the latter is a liability not an asset.","PeriodicalId":311378,"journal":{"name":"African Social Science and Humanities Journal","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125689212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This could be seen from creative work of God. Not only did He engage in work himself, He also ordered Adam to earn his bread for himself by his labour. The Bible is replete with God’s teachings concerning work. Among these teachings, Pauline work ethics stand out. That is why this study undertook an examination of the philosophical import of Pauline work ethics in the quest for germane work ethics in Nigeria. Pauline work ethics denotes a concept where human work should be viewed as a righteous function that has been commanded by God right from the fall of man and thereafter. The inevitability of work to man consequently places new and tasking demands on workers in modern society. The study employed the qualitative research design. Data was gathered from primary and secondary sources. The data was analysed using the historical and evaluative tools. The study found out among other things that there has been a massive drift away from Biblical work ethics in contemporary Nigeria. The study recommends that Nigerian workers should adequately peruse the scriptures so as to equip themselves with relevant attitudinal dispositions towards enhancing their attitude to work. The study surmises that work is a good thing for man - a noble thing for his humanity - because through work man not only transforms nature, adapting it to his own needs, but he also cooperates with God’s creative work, making him a co-worker with God. The Nigerian working environment would greatly be improved if workers imbibe the biblical work ethics.","PeriodicalId":311378,"journal":{"name":"African Social Science and Humanities Journal","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-12-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116743129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Conflicts over religion, ethnicity, and post-election violence in Africa, and notably Nigeria, harm people's lives and livelihoods. Conflicts occurred in Kaduna, Plateau, and the Bauchi State over a period of time. There has been a public uproar due to the escalating crisis in Bauchi State. To promote peace-building in Bauchi State, Nigeria, this article attempts to investigate the causes that led to the formation of the Interfaith Mediation Centre. The John Paul Lederach theory of peace building served as the basis for this investigation. The study used a descriptive approach. Qualitative research design was employed. The main informants were chosen by the researcher from among Interfaith Mediation Centre personnel, religious leaders, and government officials using a purposive sample technique. Data were extracted from both primary and secondary sources of data collecting. Thematic content analysis was used for analysing the data. The results of the study showed that although the Interfaith Mediation Centre was founded in 1995 to address the problems of persistent ethno religious violence affecting Bauchi state, its main goal was to put an end the conflicts. Another research result supported the idea that IMC fosters peaceful communities in Bauchi and elsewhere through various forms of strategic involvement and mediation. Accordingly, the study concluded that the organization offers training materials to boost and develop peace-building ability, promote religious tolerance, ethnic unity, and the empowerment of women to inculcate the culture of peace. The study recommended that the Interfaith Mediation Centre should keep promoting dialogue among Muslims and Christians, and also promote peace education in the state.","PeriodicalId":311378,"journal":{"name":"African Social Science and Humanities Journal","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124048057","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Nigeria, various strategies for achieving national development seem not to achieve the desired objectives. The country has been bedevilled by various development problems which permeate all the sectors in the country. One of the problems is the high rate of insecurity in Nigeria. The paper examines the state of insecurity in Nigeria and its consequences on the quest to achieve Development Administration in the country.
