A set of self-administered questionnaires through snowball sampling method was used to retrieve information among 30 respondents within various backgrounds which include project directors, general managers and project managers. Based on the analysis using Statistical Package for the Social Sciences (SPSS), this research has discovered that the main reason GPMs are highly needed in Malaysia’s construction industry is to ensure a successful delivery of green development goals. Nevertheless, this research found a number of challenges in promoting certified GPM, which include limited training for project managers that incorporates sustainability elements. This research found that training is significant to equip them with the necessary skills and knowledge towards becoming certified GPM to date, a private sector organization known as Bridget is the sole provider of specific training for GPM in Malaysia. The respondents of this study are limited among project directors, general managers and project managers in the Klang Valley who are currently involved in green building projects. This paper fulfils the recognized need to study the success factors on the implementation of certification for Green Project Managers (GPM) in Malaysia.","PeriodicalId":311104,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Surveying, Construction & Property","volume":"130 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116574424","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, due to the high concentration of population, urbans encounter various challenges, i.e. environmental degradation, social unhealthiness, low sense of security, unhealthy lifestyle and traffic congestion. These phenomenon affect the liveability of urban dwellers. Liveability is affected by physical environmental and social aspects. A liveability study had been carried out in Kuala Lumpur city (with Mandy Villa as the study area) and a suburban (Puncak Alam). This paper is prepared with the aim to analyse the liveability of the residents in these areas and the relationship with the physical and social aspects. With a questionnaire survey, the respondents with diverse social and demographic background were mostly felt that the study areas were liveable. Relationship analysis via correlation tests showed that some of the physical aspects and most of the social aspects were positively and significantly related to the liveability level. With the research findings, urban managers, planners, private company and public agencies can come out with better strategies to improve the urban liveability. Nevertheless, more studies should be carried out in future for different locality for a better understanding of the urban liveability and the determining factors.","PeriodicalId":311104,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Surveying, Construction & Property","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130917705","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, in order to overcome these issues, an alternative by implementing green building has been introduced. One of the sustainable approaches in a green building that can be implemented is the green roof. The utilization of a green rooftop over structures has gradually turned into a pattern in urban communities as it gives various advantages to the nation. The objective of the study is to analyse the criteria of maintenance and the rank of each criterion in approaching towards the establishment of best practice of the maintenance for the green roof, by concentrating on high-rise buildings for residential. The data were collected from respondents using the distributed questionnaires through email and via online survey. A total of 30 maintenance managers were drawn as the sample for the study by using purposive sampling technique, where 20 were returned and valid for analysis. Descriptive statistic of mean ranks and standard deviations was adopted for analysis. The most significant criteria in green roof maintenance are drainage, followed by waterproofing, irrigation, water retention and roof slab, based on the result obtained. The result of the study provides a significant improvement to the existing practice in the maintenance practice of the green roof by highlighting its maintenance criteria and key address, as it may assist to standardize the maintenance practice of green roofs in the Malaysian tropical climate.","PeriodicalId":311104,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Surveying, Construction & Property","volume":"124 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123188641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Residential fire in Malaysia has a high percentage of fire cases due to electrical sources, cooking appliances, defective of equipment, careless and negligence. Evacuation during fire is the most critical features in building safety. This includes the utilization of Building Information Modelling (BIM) in developing a good and efficient fire evacuation. This research paper aims to propose and established a conceptual framework of Dwelling Fire Safety Evacuation (DFSE). This paper utilizes the technique of systematic overview from previous research which includes journals, conferences proceedings, reports, framework and guidelines. The outcome of this paper consists the elements of dwelling fire safety evacuation including the element of Fire Scenarios (i.e., Fire characteristic, Building characteristic and Occupant characteristic), Influences Perceived Risk (i.e., Individual-Based, Physical and Social), Survival Strategy (i.e., extinguish, shelter and evacuation) and Safety (i.e., shortest time and awareness) which contributed to the development of the conceptual framework. These findings will assist the extended investigation of DFSE for accidental fire situations.","PeriodicalId":311104,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Surveying, Construction & Property","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-08-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129325724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Public participation is an integral element in EIA to ensure a successful EIA. Effective public participation encourages community empowerment, fair and democratic decisions and reduce thus avoid public confrontation and delay. Effective public participation is one of the key pillars to achieve effective EIA. Environmental issues are known to be the negative outcome of a poorly implemented EIA process. This paper discusses seven environmental cases that were produced from ineffective application of EIA such as Bakun Dam, Murum Dam, Baram Dam, bauxite mining in Kuantan, gold mining in Bukit Koman, sturgeon farming in Kuala Tahan and Lynas plant. The seven cases focused on the lack of public participation in the administration of EIA. Public objections and protests were results of ineffective public participations and ineffective EIAs in the chosen cases. Four out of seven cases have made substantive results where the projects stopped or ceased due to the public objections. Meanwhile, the three cases went on till today. Conclusively, these cases has shown that public participation in EIA is a valuable tool which encourages transparent decision-making process and defies corrupted influences.","PeriodicalId":311104,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Surveying, Construction & Property","volume":"64 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124022535","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, this study examined the current growth status of QSFs in Lagos and Ondo States, Nigeria. This was achieved by assessing some germane growth indicators of firms which include asset, profit, staffing, clients and so on. Descriptive research design was adopted through a census survey of all quantity surveying firms in the study area. Questionnaires were distributed to top management executives of the firms and the data adequately analysed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) to compare the growth indicators (at startup level and current level) and test statistic F was computed to test hypotheses. It was revealed that QSFs have not been experiencing growth in the number of employees, number of clients and asset owned by the firms. Furthermore, there is decrease in profit which is the indicator that most determines firm’s growth. Therefore, the study recommends that QSFs in Nigeria should maximize their profit level so that employees’ strength and salary are not affected since QSFs depends on the skill of quantity surveyors in order to succeed and survive.","PeriodicalId":311104,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Surveying, Construction & Property","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131259831","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It examines recent research findings in the light of encumbrances facing the Nigerian housing policy with an emphasis on low-cost housing (LCH) development. It also evaluates how the Malaysian Government over the years have made a good attempt to make homeownership affordable for Malaysian citizens irrespective of their income with various LCH policies and programmes that are economically feasible and technically practicable. It examines studies in the Nigerian housing sector that revealed severe scarcity, high cost of LCH, inaccessibility to housing loan, weak LCH policy, high corruption, high inflation among others. This affords insights into the Malaysian potential policy practices that could be implemented in Nigeria to address the prolonged chronic housing problem. Hence, it evaluates whether the Malaysian LCH policy can be modified and applied in the Nigerian context as possible policy measures. The article shows that the Malaysian Government sees housing provision as one of the major pillars and synergy with other constructs of welfare in line with the system embedded approach. Furthermore, this approach appears to be gaining ground and would stir-up the Nigerian Government policy-makers with poor-friendly policies so that LIEs can gain access to homes.","PeriodicalId":311104,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Surveying, Construction & Property","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115395300","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These companies constitute less than 5 percent of the number of construction enterprises in Nigeria; however, they are involved in over 95 percent of high net-worth construction activities. Nigeria Indigenous Construction Enterprises (NICE) are faced with numerous challenges that have limited their performances. This makes construction clients to patronize foreigners’ managed construction firms because of the flaws in the performances of NICE. There have been measures on how to make NICE relevant, but most attempts have achieved little or no success. This study was aimed at examining the challenges of NICE in the face of the present scenario and to proffer ways of possible improvement. Primary data were collected by administering a structured questionnaire to both clients and contractors who are involved in the day-to-day construction activities. Data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, mean score and Kruskal-Wallis test. The study identified 25 challenges of NICE and 18 ways of improving NICE performance through careful literature reviews. The analysis of the total ranking among stakeholders revealed that limited technical expertise, insufficient profit on projects and delay in the payment of contractors for work done were the highest-ranked challenges. Application of project management techniques in construction activities, quality control of materials and improving production capabilities were the most important means of improving NICE performance as identified. The findings of this study will help to improve the competitiveness of indigenous contractors if well implemented as it will help to reduce the cost of construction as the competition nest for performing contractors will be widened.","PeriodicalId":311104,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Surveying, Construction & Property","volume":"183 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115060361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
