In Colombia, reference intervals for these two visual tests have been established based on parameters mainly found in foreign populations. Objectives : To determine reference intervals for VA and CSF in a healthy school population aged 5 to 19 years in Pereira, Colombia. Materials and methods : In this descriptive cross-sectional study, 626 subjects aged 5 to 19 years were evaluated in a random two-stage cluster sample. VA was evaluated using logMAR charts, and CSF was assessed using CSV 1000E. Results : The study found that in a normal subject aged 5 to 19 years VA oscillates between −0.20 and 0.10 logMAR, with a median of 0.0. VA is higher between 15 and 19 years of age; in addition, men have higher VA. The normal intervals for CSF, using CSV 1000E at spatial frequencies of 3, 6, 12, and 18 cpd, are: 1.49 logSC and 2.08 logSC; 1.70 logs and 2.29 logs; 1.40 logSC and 1.99 logSC; and 0.96 logSC and 1.55 logSC, respectively. Conclusions : VA in school children aged 5 to 19 years is similar to the values reported in the literature, while CSF is lower at low spatial frequencies.","PeriodicalId":31094,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia y Tecnologia para la Salud Visual y Ocular","volume":"15 1","pages":"39-46"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48880622","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this reason, the aim of this study is to understand the relationship between these two concepts and thus deduce their significance. The study was performed under a qualitative and descriptive approach due to its interpretativeinductive nature and hermeneutic design. This methodology is used to allow the understanding, explaining and interpreting of the theories proposed for QWL and its relationships with occupational health and safety as a decisive factor thereof. A literature search and content analysis was performed. The results of this analysis the evolution of concepts, their interrelationships and three approaches from OSH are presented. QWL has a comprehensive and multidimensional character, so intervention to issues affecting welfare of workers in their work and family environment is complemented by actions of OSH.","PeriodicalId":31094,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia y Tecnologia para la Salud Visual y Ocular","volume":"15 1","pages":"85-94"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48960484","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective : To identify the refractive, motor, and pathological status of the anterior and posterior segment in children from two child development centers (CDC) in Pereira, Colombia. Materials and methods : This descriptive, retrospective, cross-sectional study examines the socio-demographic characteristics and visual and ocular morbidity of children in socioeconomic strata 0 and 1, according to the clinical records of examinations carried out in 2012 and 2013, and based on the children examined in 2014 and 2015. Results : 718 subjects were evaluated from the two CDCs, 46.1% female and 53.9% male, with a mean age of 46.2 months (SD ± 12.5). The ethnic group with the highest representation was mestizo (83.7%), followed by Afro-Colombian (13.8%), and indigenous (2.5%). The average spherical equivalent (M) was +0.34 D and the average cylinder was 0.17 D (J0), with a with-the-rule axis. The most prevalent refractive state was emmetropia (66.0%), followed by hypermetropia (16.0%), astigmatism (15.0%), and myopia (3.0%). Anisometropia had a prevalence of 5.2%; strabismus 1.1%; blepharitis 4.0%, and bacterial conjunctivitis 1.0%. Conclusions : The most frequent diagnoses were emmetropia, orthophoria, and blepharitis; most of these data are different from those found in other ethnic studies reported in other countries.","PeriodicalId":31094,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia y Tecnologia para la Salud Visual y Ocular","volume":"15 1","pages":"61-70"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"47613235","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The case was analyzed considering the signs and symptoms, as well as the evolution of the pathology. Objective : To develop a differential diagnosis between chronic allergic conjunctivitis and persistent allergic rhinoconjunctivitis, starting from a process that was diagnosed as infectious. Method : Evaluation using biomicroscopy, as well as examination of nasal passages, throat and conjunctival exudate, as a diagnostic aid. Results : After clinical evaluation, chronic allergic rhinitis was diagnosed; thus, the patient was referred to a general practitioner for systemic treatment and antihistamine treatment was administered locally. Conclusion : Persistent rhinoconjunctivitis has a prevalence of approximately 88% in patients attending ophthalmological consultation. It is important that in clinical practice optometrists strengthen the diagnosis with special tests for allergy detection, while applying diagnostic questionnaires such as the one presented by the International Study of Asthma and Allergies in Childhood (ISAAC) and multidisciplinary work.","PeriodicalId":31094,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia y Tecnologia para la Salud Visual y Ocular","volume":"15 1","pages":"113-122"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"48220566","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective : To describe human talent in visual health in Bogota during 2013 and 2014, in order to examine demographic and socioeconomic characteristics, undergraduate studies, professional experience, income, contract modality, among others. Methodology : Quantitative approach with descriptive, cross-sectional design. Databases of the National Technical Professional Council of Optometry, the District Health Secretariat of Bogota, and the Colombian Association of Faculties of Optometry were used. A survey of 22 questions was designed and applied to 1276 optometrists in Bogota. Results : 36% of the surveyed optometrists have been in practice for 0 to 5 years; while 23% for 6 to 10 years. 61% of the optometrists work 5 to 8 hours/day, while 27% work more than 8 hours/day. Higher incomes come from optometry consultation (57%), followed by sales of custom medical devices for visual and ocular health (31%). The majority of optometrists (49%) report having a monthly income of 4 to 6 times the minimum wage in force; they have indefinite-term contracts and report being dependent. Conclusion : Optometry offers the possibility of independent work as a differentiating factor, due to including the sales of custom medical devices, as well as teaching and research in the professional practice, which all generate additional incomes.","PeriodicalId":31094,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia y Tecnologia para la Salud Visual y Ocular","volume":"15 1","pages":"47-59"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"45434614","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Objective : To know the clinical, therapeutic, and epidemiological characteristics of the HPV infection in the anterior segment of the eye and eyelids, as well as its differential diagnoses. Methodology : A systematized and exhaustive review of relevant scientific literature with evidence of objectivity and reproductivity in the conclusions. The search was limited to a systematic review of meta-analyses and clinical trials, in English and Spanish, starting in 2000, based on the evaluation of the quality of the studies provided by the University of Oxford. Results : Extensive information was gathered on the infections produced by HPV in the anterior segment of the eye, in addition to determining their clinical, therapeutic, epidemiological, and preventive characteristics. Similarly, differential diagnoses were analyzed. Conclusion : Today, HPV infection is considered to be of great importance for human health; therefore, optometrists should have up-to-date knowledge on the subject in order to provide an adequate diagnosis, based on the identification of symptoms and signs, and to achieve a successful treatment.","PeriodicalId":31094,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia y Tecnologia para la Salud Visual y Ocular","volume":"15 1","pages":"97-109"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"46547035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

General objective: To determine the status of visual perceptual skills in school children aged 7 to 12 years with refractive amblyopia, residents of Bogota. Materials and methods: A descriptive observational study was developed; the sample was obtained by visual screening of the students of the selected age group—complete examination, including cycloplegia, of the students with possible positive amblyopia in screening—and by applying TVPS-3 to the children with confirmed diagnosis of amblyopia. Results: The visual perceptual skills of visual closure, figure-ground, form constancy, and spatial relationships were more frequently below normal values. Conclusions: The study found that some of the visual perceptual skills in the amblyopic patients of the sample were below the values considered normal.","PeriodicalId":31094,"journal":{"name":"Ciencia y Tecnologia para la Salud Visual y Ocular","volume":"15 1","pages":"31-38"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-08-07","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"42382985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
