Transl. 2010, also known as crossmedial relations (Fateeva 2007)) in Russian contemporary literture, focusing on their translation and underlining the primary importance of their analysis and function in the source text. The current research develops from previous work centered on cinema intertextuality in M. Elizarov’s novel Cartoons (Marcucci 2015a) and, secondarily, in E. Popov’s Internet novel Arbeit. A broad canvas (Marcucci 2015b). The current study follows up on this research by investigating Andrey Astvatsaturov’s novel Naked People (translated by the author) and pursuing three aims. 1. Analyze the types of intexts (which films does the author refer to? From which period? Of wich genres?) and the strategies used by the author to insert in his text references to other texts belonging to the cinema semiotic system, in which iconic signs have a primary role. 2. Explore the functions of these intexts. 3. Reflect on the operations to carry out when such texts are translated into a different linguacultural universe, specifically the Italian one. Here, the main focus will shift onto the translator’s role and task.","PeriodicalId":30935,"journal":{"name":"Lingue e Linguaggi","volume":"1 1","pages":"281-290"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"82295013","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Case-study analysis illustrates how such interactions, though propositionally conveyed in writing, in fact come to be perceived with the same analogical immediacy as spoken language. Through such a hybrid mode of discourse, migrants give vent to their concern at finding themselves suddenly caught in a condition of anxiety and even more segregation. Case-study data demonstrate how migrants make a linguaculturally-marked use of novel forms of syllabic notations, acronyms, emojis, and phrasal verbs triggering unusual relexicalization and decategorialization processes which, indeed, challenge what has conventionally been considered as the natural course of language change, governed by the ‘economy principle’ at both structural and functional levels.","PeriodicalId":30935,"journal":{"name":"Lingue e Linguaggi","volume":"15 1","pages":"179-200"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"79122059","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Beyond the boundaries. Migration discourse in EU parliamentary debates","authors":"M. Giordano","doi":"10.1285/I22390359V39P131","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1285/I22390359V39P131","url":null,"abstract":"Immigration has emerged as a prevalent political issue throughout the entire European Union over the past few years. Hardly a day goes by without news stories of people fleeing the Middle East and Northern Africa to reach the shores of Europe, or without an act of violence, the emergence of a new association or political party, or debates on policy initiatives taken by EU Member States. In this respect, and in ways which were almost completely ‘unexpected’ some years ago, nearly every single aspect of political discussion has been affected by the issue of immigration. In every European country new movements have emerged, anti-immigrant political parties have obtained electoral advances and have altered the balance of political forces. This new balance has influenced policy changes in the EU as Members States have attempted to deal with the challenges that threaten understandings, agreements, social policy and the political and social construction of Europe itself. By adopting CDA (Fairclough 1995, 2013; van Dijk 1984; Wodak 1997) and Zapata-Barrero’s distinction between re-active and pro-active discourse (2007), this work analyses a corpus of EU parliamentary debates on migration. The aim was to ascertain whether and to what extent the interventions taken into consideration negatively react against the process of integration and multiculturalism resulting from the arrival of migrants or whether they instead positively accompany the process and consider it a historic opportunity and not a threat. The ad hoc corpus, which covers a time span of three years – from 2016 to 2018 – will be investigated both quantitatively and qualitatively in order to identify the most frequent lexemes and their co-occurring patterns of usage along with the most recurrent or relevant phraseology in the verbatim reports. The interventions under scrutiny deal with migration issues, such as the flow of migrants legally or illegally entering the EU, asylum seekers, undocumented residents, borders and boundaries, thus allowing for the exploration of re-active and pro-active discourse constructions and of the strategies of legitimation used by MPs who try to demonstrate that their policies and actions towards immigration are legitimate, and executed within the boundaries and barriers of moral order and correct procedures (van Leeuwen, Wodak 1999; van Leeuwen 2007).","PeriodicalId":30935,"journal":{"name":"Lingue e Linguaggi","volume":"209 1","pages":"131-156"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"80601692","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also, it aims to enrich the gamut of studies on cross-linguistic influence (CLI) by adding up critical observations and interpretations on recent research on both progressive and regressive transfer in TLA and development. In this work, we also try to cast light on potential lines for future research, by placing emphasis on some areas of TLA studies which have been so far understudied. First, we discuss the issues in giving a univocal definition for the process of TLA, and untangle the role of linguistic and extralinguistic factors in CLI between a native language (L1), a second language (L2) and a third language (L3). Next, we sketch different scenarios for what concerns potential sources of progressive transfer: absolute/full transfer from L1, as argued by the “Developmentally Moderated Transfer Hypothesis”; privileged transfer from L2, as postulated by the “Second Language Status Factor”; transfer from any previously acquired language, as maintained by the “Cumulative-enhancement Model” and the “Typological Primacy Model”; property-by-property transfer, as supported by the “Parasitic Model”, the “Linguistic Proximity Model” and the “Scalpel Model”. Then, we present the only theoretical framework currently present in literature describing regressive transfer in TLA, i.e. the “Phonological Permeability Hypothesis”. Finally, we suggest that sociolinguistic, socioeconomic and socioeducational factors should gain more relevance in TLA studies, and that a “Dynamic Model” may have a crucial role in interpreting the intersection of all these multifaceted aspects.","PeriodicalId":30935,"journal":{"name":"Lingue e Linguaggi","volume":"10 1","pages":"339-359"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83711348","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is meant as a pedagogical and practical tool that can help intercultural linguistic mediators increase their competence at the time of analysing and reproducing source texts for an audience of non-native English speakers. In particular, our model is adopted here for the retextualization into English as a ‘lingua franca’ (ELF) of a number of extracts from the ‘Bossi-Fini’ law and ‘Testo unico sull’immigrazione’, which indicate the actions that migrants have to follow to request residence document. After illustrating the theoretical grounds of the ELFentextualization process, this paper will examine the selected corpus of English retextualizations of Italian legal discourse. The comparison between the original and ‘ELFentextualized’ versions will exemplify that the latter are elaborated after an initial phase of ‘text analysis’, which is meant to infer the gist of the message. The essential pieces of information are then reconstructed by resorting to lexical and syntactic simplification, as well as to the macrorules for text summarization. Finally, this paper enquires into the initial phases of a reception study of the examined reformulations, which will help discuss the lingua-franca connotation of the English uses in the texts under examination.","PeriodicalId":30935,"journal":{"name":"Lingue e Linguaggi","volume":"44 1","pages":"221-234"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"88588040","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Social media users benefit from the digital nature of such interactions to gather data for different purposes, including discourse-related ones (Zappavigna 2012). Hashtags, in this sense, have proved to be an effective tool that is used to broaden communication but also to prompt real-life actions, especially to face and manage critical or emergency situations (Olteanu et al . 2015). This specific device is more likely to be used effectively on Twitter, a popular micro-blog used as an information aggregator and catalyst for action (Zappavigna 2015). Following previous studies focusing on the same topic (Burnap et al. 2014; Hughes, Palen 2009), the paper examines examples of context-based words and/or purpose-specific hashtags to explore their use by different sets of users with diverse intentions and aims. Twitter data are retrieved by means of real-time data mining tools (Brooker et al. 2016) to create relevant keyword- or hashtag-based sample corpora dealing with emergency situations (Aug – Sep 2017: two terror attacks and a natural disaster) which have caused remarkable media exposure. Data from such corpora identify some relevant words used in such situations, grouped according to several variables such as event-related, channel-dependent or sentiment-based criteria. Furthermore, an aggregated analysis is carried out in order to retrieve the most common patterns used to highlight performativity, thus emphasising the role of purpose-specific communication. Finally, a comparison of aggregated corpora with different tool-specific features ( retweets ) highlights the importance of such tool-specific devices in magnifying the range of communication effectiveness occurring in a proper ‘online discourse community’ (Herring 2008).","PeriodicalId":30935,"journal":{"name":"Lingue e Linguaggi","volume":"4 1","pages":"291-310"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"87200955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
