However, many studies thus far did not link the evolution of classes to faults. Since (1) some classes evolve independently, other classes have to do it together with others (co-evolution), and (2) not all classes are meant to last forever, but some are meant for experimentation or to try out an idea that was then dropped or modified. In this paper, we group classes based on their evolution to infer their lifetime models and coevolution trends. Then, we link each group's evolution to faults. We create phylogenetic trees showing the evolutionary history of programs and we use such trees to facilitate spotting the program code decay. We perform an empirical study, on three open-source programs: ArgoUML, JFreechart, and XercesJ, to examine the relation between the evolution of object-oriented source code at class level and fault-proneness. Our results indicate that (1) classes having a specific lifetime model are significantly less fault-prone than other classes and (2) faults fixed by maintaining co-evolved classes are significantly more frequent than faults fixed using not co-evolved classes.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123600113","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This dissertation proposal aims to investigate these indicators and therefore addresses reuse from an industrial point of view. As a first step, it empirically assesses the general state of reuse in practice. This is achieved via a large-scale online questionnaire distributed to multiple companies. Complementing the questionnaire, extensive interviews are being scheduled with developers and project managers of the respective companies. The goal is to interview approximately 10 employees per company. Three companies have already committed to the interview phase and contact with seven further companies is currently being established. In a second step, the findings of the study will be used to extract the context and type of reuse, as well as success factors and hindrances. This information forms the basis for an analytical assessment model for internal code reuse, which is developed in a third step. It will capture a range of different aspects of reuse in practice and will be combined with a process to evaluate the adequacy of reuse. The planned result is a larger assessment framework for evaluating the reuse (management) process within a project as well as a multi-project context. As a result, guidelines for code organization should be developed and tested for their effects in improving reuse in one or more of the industrial partners projects.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123632823","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

How should this be done for a given location? Is the code still correct? And finally: Does it execute faster? In this paper we present a refactoring concept to exploit parallelizable regions in legacy software. Our concept relies on the presence of recurring patterns and identifies potential regions, transforms them to parallel versions, tests them for correctness and tunes their parallel performance. We show early implementation results.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"88 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115355826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The market of apps has rapidly expanded in the past few years into a multi-billion dollar business. Being a new phenomenon, it is unclear whether approaches to maintain and comprehend traditional software systems can be ported to the context of apps. We present a novel approach to comprehend apps from a structural and historical perspective, leveraging three factors for the analysis: source code, usage of third-party APIs, and historical data. We implemented our approach in a web-based software analytics platform named SAMOA. We detail our approach and the supporting tool, and present a number of findings obtained while investigating a corpus of mobile applications. Our findings reveal that apps differ significantly from traditional software systems in a number of ways, which calls for the development of novel approaches to maintain and comprehend them.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"146 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116466130","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It aims to make sure that the performance of new releases do not regress under a field-like load. The main outputs of regression tests are the metrics that represent the response time of various transactions as well as the resource utilization (CPU, disk I/Oand Network). In this paper, we propose to use a concept known as Transaction Profile, which can provide a detailed representation for the transaction in a load independent manner, to detect anomalies through performance test runs. The approach uses data readily available in performance regression tests and a queueing network model of the system under test to infer the Transactions Profiles. Our initial results show that the Transactions Profiles calculated from load regression test data uncover the performance impact of any update to the software. Therefore we conclude that using Transactions Profiles is an effective approach to allow testing teams to easily assure each new software release does not suffer performance regression.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121607374","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Without proper mechanisms to support the identification of architecturally-relevant code anomalies, software systems will degrade and might be discontinued as a consequence. Nowadays, metrics-based detection strategy is the most common mechanism to identify code anomalies. However, these strategies often fail to detect architecturally-relevant code anomalies. A key limitation is that they solely exploit measurable static properties of the source code. This paper proposes and evaluates a suite of architecture-sensitive detection strategies. These strategies exploit information related to how fully-modularized and widely-scoped architectural concerns are realized by the code elements. The accuracy of the proposed detection strategies is assessed in a sample of nearly 3500 architecturally-relevant code anomalies and 950 architectural problems distributed in 6 software systems. Our findings show that more than the 60% of code anomalies detected by the proposed strategies were related to architectural problems. Additionally, the proposed strategies identified on average 50% more architecturally-relevant code anomalies than those gathered with using conventional strategies.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125210807","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, with the increasing popularity of developer tests as the driver of the test process, more fine-grained solutions are in order. In this paper we investigate how method-level changes in the base-code can serve as a reliable indicator for identifying which tests need to be rerun. We validate the approach on two cases - PMD and Cruise Control - using mutation testing as a means to compare the selected subset against a \"retest all\" approach. Our results show that we are able to reach a sizable reduction of the complete test suite, yet with a comparable number of mutants killed by the reduced test suite.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"190 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116281525","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The unique aspect of this migration is the reengineering of the COBOL code prior to migration. The programs were in their previous form hardwired to the AS400 screens as well as to the AS400 file system. The goal of the reengineering project was to free the code from these proprietary dependencies and to reduce them to the pure business logic. Disentangling legacy code from it's physical environment is a major prerequisite to converting that code to another environment. The goal is the virtualization of program interfaces. That was accomplished here in a multistep automated process which led to small, environment independent COBOL modules which could be readily converted over into Java packages. The pilot project has been completed for a sample subset of the production planning and control system. The conversion to Java is pending the test of the reengineered COBOL modules.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128101352","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method first collects instances of the DOM trees underlying the application web pages, using a state-of-the-art crawling framework. Then, it clusters these instances into groups, corresponding to distinct features of the application. The contribution of this paper lies in the novel DOM-tree similarity metric of the clustering step, which makes a distinction between simple and composite structural changes. We have evaluated our method on three real web applications. In all three cases, the proposed distance metric leads to a number of clusters that is closer to the actual number of features and classifies web page instances into these feature-specific clusters more accurately than other traditional distance metrics. We therefore conclude that it is a reliable distance metric for reverse engineering the features of Ajax-enabled web applications.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"358 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133830782","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, a notorious difficulty for IR-based methods is that artifacts may be related even if they are not textually similar. A growing body of work addresses this challenge by combining IR-based methods with structural information from source code. Unfortunately, the accuracy of such methods is highly dependent on the IR methods. If the IR methods perform poorly, the combined approaches may perform even worse. In this paper, we propose to use the feedback provided by the software engineer when classifying candidate links to regulate the effect of using structural information. Specifically, our approach only considers structural information when the traceability links from the IR methods are verified by the software engineer and classified as correct links. An empirical evaluation conducted on three systems suggests that our approach outperforms both a pure IR-based method and a simple approach for combining textual and structural information.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129971558","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
