Unfortunately, the new constructs introduced by aspect-oriented (AO) languages result in both: (1) obstacles in modular reasoning, and (2) high coupling between aspects and the augmented modules. There have been numerous attempts to tackle these issues, but none have succeeded without sacrificing obliviousness or losing the power of AOP. In this paper, we propose a new approach to AOP inspired by the classification of aspects by Clifton & Leavens. Our approach reduces coupling in AO programs and restores modular reasoning in case when the aspects are spectators.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129877670","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Besides a poor usage of lexicon and documentation, sometimes a software artifact description is misleading with respect to its implementation. Consequently, developers will spend more time and effort when understanding these software artifacts, or even make wrong assumptions when they use them. This paper introduces the definition of software linguistic antipatterns, and defines a family of them, i.e., those related to inconsistencies (i) between method signatures, documentation, and behavior and (ii) between attribute names, types, and comments. Whereas \"design\" antipatterns represent recurring, poor design choices, linguistic antipatterns represent recurring, poor naming and commenting choices. The paper provides a first catalogue of one family of linguistic antipatterns, showing real examples of such antipatterns and explaining what kind of misunderstanding they can cause. Also, the paper proposes a detector prototype for Java programs called LAPD (Linguistic Anti-Pattern Detector), and reports a study investigating the presence of linguistic antipatterns in four Java software projects.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127650337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Developers can thus track the activities relevant to various projects in one umbrella site. Such a major change in collaborative software development makes an investigation of networkings on social coding sites valuable. Furthermore, project hosting platforms promoting this development paradigm have been thriving, among which GitHub has arguably gained the most momentum. In this paper, we contribute to the body of knowledge on social coding by investigating the network structure of social coding in GitHub. We collect 100,000 projects and 30,000 developers from GitHub, construct developer-developer and project-project relationship graphs, and compute various characteristics of the graphs. We then identify influential developers and projects on this sub network of GitHub by using PageRank. Understanding how developers and projects are actually related to each other on a social coding site is the first step towards building tool supports to aid social programmers in performing their tasks more efficiently.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127905795","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In particular, multi-tier business applications, e.g., based on the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA), are vulnerable to new attacks, which may endanger the business processes of an organization. These applications consist often of legacy code, which is now exported via Web Services, although it has originally been developed for internal use only. The last years showed great progress in the area of static code analysis for the detection of common low level security bugs, such as buffer overflows and cross-site scripting vulnerabilities. However, there is still a lack of tools that allow an analyst to assess the implemented security architecture of an application. In this paper, we propose a technique that automatically extracts the implemented security architecture of Java-based business applications from the source code. In addition, we carry out threat modeling on this extracted architecture to detect security flaws. We evaluate and discuss our approach with the help of two commercial real-world case studies, one taken from the e-government domain and the other one from logistics.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"5 12","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120807286","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a consequence, these services archive voluminous and potentially useful information to help developers to solve programming-specific issues. Programmers tap into this crowd knowledge through web browsers. This requires them to step out of their integrated development environments (IDE), formulate a query, inspect the returned results and manually port the solution back to the IDE. We present an integrated and largely automated approach to assist programmers who want to leverage the crowd knowledge of Q&A services. We give a form to our approach by implementing Seahawk, an Eclipse plugin. Seahawk automatically formulates queries from the current context in the IDE, and presents a ranked and interactive list of results. Seahawk lets users identify individual discussion pieces and import code samples through simple drag & drop. Users can also link Stack Overflow discussions and source code persistently. We performed an evaluation of Seahawk, with promising results.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126657170","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to provide support for change management, they track the history of software projects. Tool builders can exploit this latent historical information to provide insights in the evolution of the project. For example, the information needed to identify when and where a particular refactoring was applied is implicitly present in the VCS. However, tool support for eliciting this information is lacking. So far, no general-purpose history querying tool capable of answering a wide variety of questions about the evolution of software exists. Therefore, we generalize the idea of a program querying tool to a history querying tool. A program querying tool reifies the program's code into a knowledge base, from which it retrieves elements that exhibit characteristics specified through a user-provided program query. Our history querying tool, QwalKeko, enables specifying the evolution of source code characteristics across multiple versions of Java projects versioned in Git. We apply QwalKeko to the problem of detecting refactorings, specified as the code changes induced by each refactoring. These specifications stem from the literature, but are limited to changes between two successive versions. We demonstrate the expressiveness of our tool by generalizing the specifications such that refactorings can span multiple versions.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114627949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over a life cycle of tens of years, maintenance upgrades of the software running these control systems must not introduce new software errors or otherwise break existing functionality. The EU FP7 project PINCETTE addresses this challenge by employing a combination of static and dynamic software verification tools. The changes between versions are used both as guidance for improving efficiency of software verification, and also to define new notions of correctness. We report on current progress and initial validation results by our industrial partners.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121908679","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

For this reason, refactoring actions are often suggested. In this paper, we investigate a different side-effect of antipatterns, which is their effect on testability and on testing cost in particular. We consider as (upper bound) indicator of testing cost the number of test cases that satisfy the minimal data member usage matrix (MaDUM) criterion proposed by Bashir and Goel. A study-carried out on four Java programs, Ant 1.8.3, ArgoUML 0.20, Check Style 4.0, and JFreeChart 1.0.13-supports the evidence that, on the one hand, antipatterns unit testing requires, on average, a number of test cases substantially higher than unit testing for non-antipattern classes. On the other hand, antipattern classes must be carefully tested because they are more defect-prone than other classes. Finally, we illustrate how specific refactoring actions-applied to classes participating in antipatterns-could reduce testing cost.","PeriodicalId":309343,"journal":{"name":"2013 17th European Conference on Software Maintenance and Reengineering","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2013-03-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125352475","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We defined a strategy and a process for migrating a subject system that performs intensive and massive computation to a Graphics Processing Unit (GPU) based architecture. We validated our solutions on a software system for path finding robot simulations. An initial comparison on the energy consumption of the original system and the greened one has been also executed.
