However, we argue that these existing services do not sufficiently bring real-world contexts into app testing, which reduces the visibility into how an unreleased app would perform in the wild. In fact, this is a challenging problem that current emulator-based or device-based testing services cannot properly or scalably address. This paper envisions a split-execution model for building automated and contextual testing services for mobile apps. This model allows the service to evolve over time, by adopting new algorithms and recruiting new physical devices. Finally, preliminary results from a prototype demonstrate the potential and feasibility of our proposed architecture.","PeriodicalId":309322,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th International Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133831423","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With offline training, activity recognition tasks can be offloaded from the wearable to the user's phone, without transferring raw sensing data. The key observation is that when the user is carrying both devices, the sensing streams on the two devices are highly correlated. By exploiting the correlation, the phone can estimate the wearable's sensing data and emulate the watch. Our evaluations shows that with Telepath, the phone performs accurately on activity recognition tasks that are designed for smart watches, achieving on average 87% of the watch's accuracy while extending the watch's battery life by 2.1x.","PeriodicalId":309322,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th International Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications","volume":"128 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-02-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132267324","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The applications differ from each other by the way in which the user interacts with the application, i.e., video I/O and user controls, however in all the user experience is highly sensitive to end-to-end latency. Long latency between a user control event and display update renders the application unusable. Hence, understanding the nature and origins of latency of these applications is of paramount importance. We show through extensive measurements that control input and display buffering have a substantial effect on the overall delay. Our results shed light on the latency bottlenecks and the maturity of technology for seamless user experience with these applications.","PeriodicalId":309322,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 18th International Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and Applications","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-11-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132082900","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
