In this paper, two algorithms which can be easily implemented in a smartdevice and make use of standard onboard sensors, such as the camera and the accelerometer, are described. The first exploits the high performance in image processing of Cellular Nonlinear Networks to detect the occurrence of blinking eyes during driving, which can be associated to a state of fatigue of the driver. The second algorithm addresses the problem of brusque braking in order to enhance the capabilities of existing braking assistance devices. The obtained experimental results assess the capabilities of the proposed algorithms and their effectiveness in increasing driver safety at a low cost.","PeriodicalId":309111,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Control (ISIC)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129871552","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A set of fuzzy logic engines are proposed to infer the values of tuning gains which affect the control performance and control effort of the controller, which would conventionally be set to a static value based on expert knowledge of the controller; the aim of this being to avoid the use of arbitary values to set these values. A simulated experiment is carried out, where the Baxter robot is required to move an object through a trajectory while subjected to two different disturbance forces in four phases. The controller with fuzzy inferred control gains is compared against the same controller with fixed gains to gauge the effectiveness of the new method. Results show that fuzzy inference of control gains impart an improvement in both tracking error and control effort.","PeriodicalId":309111,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Control (ISIC)","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125516072","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An interesting alternative solution is to learn such models from data, and keep them up-to-date through online adaptation. In this paper we consider the problem of learning the robot inverse dynamic model under dynamically varying contexts: the robot learns incrementally and autonomously the model under different conditions, represented by the manipulation of objects of different weights, that change the dynamics of the system. The inverse dynamic mapping is modeled as a multi-valued function, in which different outputs for the same input query are related to different dynamic contexts (i.e. different manipulated objects). The mapping is estimated using IMLE, a recent online learning algorithm for multi-valued regression, and used for Computed Torque control. No information is given about the context switch during either learning or control, nor any assumption is made about the kind of variation in the dynamics imposed by a new contexts. Experimental results with the iCub humanoid robot are provided.","PeriodicalId":309111,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Control (ISIC)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124393332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The setup is an example of coupled dynamical systems whose modular structure makes them candidates for agent based distributed control methods. A set of low cost Raspberry Pi microcomputers connected via a common Ethernet-network is used for the implementation of the DMPC. The DMPC algorithm employs an augmented Lagrangian approach to solve the distributed optimal control problem (OCP) subject to nonlinear system dynamics in continuous-time form and input constraints. In this way, the performance and modular character of the DMPC as well as the individual runtime footprints of the communication and computation with respect to the overall runtime of the distributed algorithm are studied.","PeriodicalId":309111,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Control (ISIC)","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127033018","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The curve is constituted by employing normalized uniform B-splines as basis functions. In particular, considering the case when a set of given data includes some outliers, we develop an algorithm for detecting such outliers so that L2 smoothing splines can be robustly constructed with the optimal estimate of the so-called smoothing parameter. Such an algorithm is developed by utilizing the difference between sensitivities of optimal L1 and L2 smoothing splines to outliers. Moreover, we apply the method to a problem on data compression of “Digital-Ink” which is a sequence of data sampled from the traced curve at some sampling rate. It is shown that our method can be used effectively for excluding the influence due to the pen slips. We demonstrate the effectiveness by some experimental studies.","PeriodicalId":309111,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Control (ISIC)","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123686232","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Also iterative learning control law design can be undertaken in a repetitive process setting and for linear dynamics such designs have been experimentally verified. This paper addresses stabilization and disturbance attenuation for differential nonlinear repetitive processes where vector Lyapunov functions are used to characterize a physically relevant stability property and the disturbance attenuation is expressed in terms of an H∞ norm. In particular, we exploit tactile sensors distributed on the robot fingers and a 6-axis force/torque sensor place at the bottom of the arm, just below the shoulder. Due to their different mounting locations and sensitivity, the sensors provide different types of contact information; their integration allows to deal with both slight and hard contacts by performing different control strategies depending on the location and the intensity of the contact. We provide real-world experimental results that show how a humanoid torso equipped with moving head, eyes, arm and hand can realize visually guided reaching dealing with different types of unexpected contacts with the environment.","PeriodicalId":309111,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Control (ISIC)","volume":"574 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116204932","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Most of these algorithms assume the agents to be mutually cooperative and “trustful” and correspondingly attractive couplings between the agents bring the values of the agents' states closer. Opinion dynamics of real social groups, however, require beyond conventional models of multi-agent consensus due to ubiquitous competition and distrust between some pairs of agents, which are usually characterized by the repulsive cou-pling. Antagonistic interactions prevent the averaging tendency of the opinions, which cooperative consensus protocols promote, and may lead to their polarization and clustering. A simple yet insightful model of opinion dynamics with both attractive and repulsive couplings was proposed recently by C. Altafini, who examined first-order consensus algorithms over static signed interaction graphs, where arcs of positive weights connect cooperating agents, and of negative weights correspond to antagonistic pairs. This protocol establishes modulus consensus, where the opinions become the same in modulus but may differ in sign. In the present paper, we extend the modulus consensus model to the case where the network topology is arbitrary time-varying, directed, signed graph. We show that under mild condition of uniform strong connectivity of the network, the protocol establishes agreement of opinions in moduli, whose signs may be opposite, so that the agents' opinions either reach consensus or polarize. This result is further extended to nonlinear consensus protocols. We show also that, unlike cooperative consensus algorithms, uniform strong connectivity cannot be relaxed to uniform quasi-strong connectivity (UQSC).","PeriodicalId":309111,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE International Symposium on Intelligent Control (ISIC)","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117015039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
