A combination of Landsat TM, SPOT, HRV, and IKONOS imageries were used to classify land use digitally and update transportation network in Al Ain, UAE using on-screen digitisation. The technique of on-screen digitisation, for updating road network from satellite imageries, had been adopted by various researchers and organisations, for example, the US Bureau of the Census. The advantage of updating transportation network using on-screen digitisation is that data will ready for integration with other layers in a GIS environment. All these layers can be linked to transportation planning models for further processing and analysis.","PeriodicalId":308988,"journal":{"name":"2003 2nd GRSS/ISPRS Joint Workshop on Remote Sensing and Data Fusion over Urban Areas","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115762603","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Involved aspects range from protection of natural and human resources, wise energy and water management, reduction of air pollution and traffic control, health and well-being of population, safeguard of cultural heritage, comfort standards in residential districts, industrial production, craftsmanship preservation, etc. Advanced instruments for territorial planning/management are required. Decisions should be based on \"proper\" information. Data set has to be accurate, objective, reliable, comprehensive and always up-to-date. Specific data/information have to be extracted out of all available information but some data/information have to be collected specifically for the purpose. This article is part of a wider research effort to carry out GIS (geographical information system) and a DSS (decision support system) for the city of Rome. Thematic maps are derived from accurately geo-coded remotely sensed images and used to draw \"Guidance Tables for Urban Planning.\" A multidisciplinary team carries out coordinated work to this scope. Application examples and results for the city of Rome are illustrated in this paper, based on integration of multispectral data from various satellites (ESA-ERS, Landsat, SPOT) and MIVIS hyperspectral data from aircraft. High complexity has been observed in land cover types, surface composition and morphology, which is directly interrelated with all phenomena taking in urbanized areas (i.e. physical, chemical, social, economic, etc.). Attention has been focused on climate, urban elements, patterns and materials.","PeriodicalId":308988,"journal":{"name":"2003 2nd GRSS/ISPRS Joint Workshop on Remote Sensing and Data Fusion over Urban Areas","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130198360","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Land cover classification of urban and sub-urban areas via fuzzy nearest-mean reclustering of SAR features","authors":"B. Aiazzi, L. Alparone, S. Baronti","doi":"10.1109/DFUA.2003.1219958","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/DFUA.2003.1219958","url":null,"abstract":"This paper describes a nonparametric algorithm based on fuzzy-reasoning concepts and suitable for land use classification, either supervised or unsupervised, starting from pixel features derived from SAR observations. Pixel vectors constituted by features calculated from the backscattering coefficients) in one or more bands and/or polarizations are clustered. At each iteration step, pixels in the scene are classified based on the minimum attained by a weighted Euclidean distance from the centroid representative of each cluster. Upgrade of centroids is iteratively obtained both from the previously obtained classification map and by thresholding a membership function of pixel vectors to each cluster. Such a function has been derived based on entropy maximization of the resulting clusters. To yield the weighted distances from a pixel vector, its features are weighted by means of progressively refined coefficients, whose calculation still relies on the membership function through a least squares algorithm. Refinements of the feature-dependent weights are introduced to optimize individual classes. Possible \"a priori\" knowledge coming from ground truth data may be used to initialize the procedure, but is not required. Experimental results carried out on SIR-C SAR data of the city of Pavia and its surroundings demonstrate the usefulness of a nonparametric classification to discriminate land use in general, and urban and built-up areas in particular, from SAR observations analogous to those which are routinely available from EnviSat. A training set, even of very small size, may be utilized. However, its knowledge affects initialization only and is unnecessary for the iterative refinement procedure. Pixel-based classification attains almost 70% accuracy without any postprocessing.","PeriodicalId":308988,"journal":{"name":"2003 2nd GRSS/ISPRS Joint Workshop on Remote Sensing and Data Fusion over Urban Areas","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128263363","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our approach is trained to track for asphalt areas, with the aim of finding out the asphalt streets on the image. The approach performs dimensionality reduction, using only the eigenvectors with the highest eigenvalues, generating an eigenspace of low dimension. The target detection is done finding out the shortest Euclidean distance among the primitives of the new images and the primitives of the class we are working with.","PeriodicalId":308988,"journal":{"name":"2003 2nd GRSS/ISPRS Joint Workshop on Remote Sensing and Data Fusion over Urban Areas","volume":"246 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133917338","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Like the visual photo-interpretation, the automatic image interpretation considers scene and sensors knowledge, delivered by an expert photo-interpreter, as well as additional information about the region like the digital elevation model, the position of the emergent rocks, the mapping of the water bodies and the road-network. By this means, the analysis of a scene can be automatically performed, mimicking the reasoning of the photo-interpreter. The implementation of such proposal employed the GEOAIDA [J. Buckner et al., June 2001] system, a flexible environment for image interpretation developed at the University of Hanover, which exploits semantic networks to structure the domain specific knowledge. In the reported experiments, a multispectral SPOT 3 XS image was analysed resulting were evaluated and compared with a manually made reference map of the investigated scene. The automatically obtained results were evaluated and compared with a manually made reference map of the investigated scene. The experimental results demonstrate the potential of a knowledge-based approach for low resolution satellite images interpretation.","PeriodicalId":308988,"journal":{"name":"2003 2nd GRSS/ISPRS Joint Workshop on Remote Sensing and Data Fusion over Urban Areas","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132185697","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The users needs are variable and somehow opposite: needs of high spatial resolution for accurate geometrical description of objects and needs for high spectral resolution for accurate spectral content and subsequent classification process. The ARSIS concept (from its French name \"amelioration de la resolution spatiale par injection de structures\" that means improvement of the spatial resolution by structure injection) permits to construct such synthetic products by fusion of two sets of data, namely panchromatic images at high spatial resolution and multispectral images at lower spatial resolution. It offers a framework wherein different models can be combined to form different solutions to better satisfy the users needs. An example is given of an Ikonos image of the city of Hasselt, Belgium.","PeriodicalId":308988,"journal":{"name":"2003 2nd GRSS/ISPRS Joint Workshop on Remote Sensing and Data Fusion over Urban Areas","volume":"132 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131324961","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Like previous SPOTs, SPOT5 is able to acquire both high resolution panchromatic data and low resolution multispectral images (green-red-infrared images), with a 2.2 s time delay between the two acquisitions. The swath remains equal to 60 km but panchromatic resolution has been increased from 10 m to 2.5 m using an optimal quincunx sampling scheme named THR mode, while multispectral sampling was improved from 20 m to 10 m. Like other high resolution remote sensing systems, SPOT5 makes it possible to produce high resolution multispectral images by merging panchromatic and multispectral data. The main difficulty consists in panchromatic/multispectral geometric registration since the misregistration depends on attitude perturbations and local relief, which leads to use automatic correlation. To merge registrated multispectral and panchromatic images, CNES selected a simple but efficient method, based on intensity/hue/saturation transform. This method was successfully compared to a set of other merging techniques through an experiment including quantitative and qualitative assessment by experts. The final false colored product, named THX, is a three band multispectral image covering a 60 km × 60 km area per scene with a 2.5 m sampling interval, which may be converted into a pseudo colored using a matrix transformation. Panchromatic/multispectral fusion finally proves to be of utmost importance for global system optimization, since it allows to generate on ground a product that could not be produced on board, mainly for transmission and data storage limitations.","PeriodicalId":308988,"journal":{"name":"2003 2nd GRSS/ISPRS Joint Workshop on Remote Sensing and Data Fusion over Urban Areas","volume":"122 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117093641","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Photo interpretation by human experts has been the major data source for disasters' monitoring and urban planning applications. However, images collected from a sensor which combines reasonably good spectral and spatial resolution images acquired by IKONOS II satellite and a RGB-HIS transformation technique have been considered to merge spectral and spatial information. Then, textural information, which characterizes urban area, has been extracted with the use of an appropriate filter for edge extraction. An MLP classifier has been trained to produce a labeled image with great accuracy in test even if a limited training set has been used. For a photo interpreter, the results reveal a good feasibility of the classified image for monitoring the presence of changes in urban areas, useful for cartographic updating.","PeriodicalId":308988,"journal":{"name":"2003 2nd GRSS/ISPRS Joint Workshop on Remote Sensing and Data Fusion over Urban Areas","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133081906","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They also play a major role in topographic mapping. For automatically capturing road junctions from images models are needed, which describe the main aspects. This paper presents an approach to road junction detection based on raster and vector information. The raster features are similar to the ones used in classification approaches. The vector features are derived from a road junction vector model containing edges as road boarders. The whole feature serves as input to an artificial neural network. The neural classifier decides for search window, whether its central pixel is a part of a road junction or not. The developed junction operator was tested on several black-and-white medium resolution orthoimages. The achieved results demonstrate that such junction models can successfully identify three- and four-arms road junctions.","PeriodicalId":308988,"journal":{"name":"2003 2nd GRSS/ISPRS Joint Workshop on Remote Sensing and Data Fusion over Urban Areas","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2003-05-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130850998","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
