Jacobsen","doi":"10.11649/slh.2791","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.11649/slh.2791","url":null,"abstract":"In Zygmunt Bauman’s work, ambivalence was a topic that recurred explicitly several times in his analyses of modernity and later liquid modernity. This was particularly evident in his book Modernity and Ambivalence (1991). But ambivalence also appears as an underlying theme in later books on life in liquid-modern society. Moreover, Bauman’s sociological perspective itself oozes ambivalence, and many of the topics he explored and embraced throughout his career – such as freedom, morality, immortality and utopia – are themselves fundamental expressions of ambivalence. In addition, Bauman always insisted that the world is not fixed once and for all, but that humans can challenge and change it, and in this way ambivalence is not an ailment to be cured but rather a fact to be accepted. This article explores the theme and leitmotif of ambivalence in the writings of Bauman. Changes in the Ways of Presenting LGBT+ Issues in Contemporary Slovak Prose\u0000\u0000In Slovakia after the Velvet Revolution of 1989 groups previously marginalized and discriminated against in the communism era, including the LGBT+ community, began activities aimed at obtaining full civil rights and developing forms of cultural representation. Gradually, the issues of non-heteronormativity began to appear in various areas of culture. As regards prose texts, which are the basis for the reflections presented in this paper, non-heteronormativity was initially portrayed in a stigmatizing, stereotype-based manner. Since the beginning of the 21st century, the dominant approach has been to expose the problem of LGBT+ people living in the closet, hiding their identity due to the homophobia in the society; the sphere of intimacy is considered as the only one that allows a sense of security and the free expression of affection and desire. In more recent works, examples of characters who have come out of the closet and have no problems with functioning openly in the family and social contexts begin to appear. {"title":"In the World Republic of Letters: Towards a Reconceptualisation of the Notion of Weltliteratur","authors":"K. Piotrowski","doi":"10.4467/20843933st.22.025.17191","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4467/20843933st.22.025.17191","url":null,"abstract":"The paper problematises the origins, characteristics, and implications of the term Weltliteratur, proffering critical insights into its interdisciplinary, transnational character and presuppositions about its discontinuous development. Having been initially conceptualised as a heretofore undeveloped research area, the domain of “world literature” is first eulogised as worthy of further scholarly attention by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe in the late 1820s – the time of political unrest and multiple socio-cultural changes. As such, the idea also seems to have been of paramount interest to the ancients (H. M. Posnett), in which sense it may be portrayed as borderline anachronistic. Conversely, it does possess and evoke great resonance in future writers, thinkers, and intellectuals alike, resulting in its many reconceptualisations, not only in the field of literary studies but also in numerous nascent or still-developing disciplines such as comparative literature, genology, translation criticism, hermeneutics, cultural studies; furthermore, it is equally relevant for a number of various thematic poetics.\u0000\u0000Engaging in a dialogue with Reinhart Koselleck’s “conceptual history” alongside its highly idiosyncratic theoretical apparatus, the present paper adapts and reappropriates Koselleck’s nomenclature with a view towards a preliminary systematisation of anticipatory mechanisms which influenced the reception of the category of Weltliteratur as much as they governed its subsequent re-development, be it in academia or in twentieth- and twenty-first-century public discourse. The sequel can be framed within the trend of cultural recycling and intertextual practices in which formerly marginalised fictional characters are given a voice or become more exposed. Although scholars have studied generic status of the text, “recursiveness” and Bloom’s “anxiety of influence” (James Shiff, Monica Latham and Bret Keeling); transformative potential of the original text, as well as images of London (Monika Girard), there is still a paucity of scholarship on narrative patterns and the concept of time. The analysis shows that if these two passages are treated separately, the former would seem to be a comic interlude that has been randomly inserted into the text, while the latter would seem to be weird, convoluted and even downright outrageous. {"title":"Słoweński patriotyzm w okresie socjalistycznej Jugosławii","authors":"Damian Kubik","doi":"10.4467/20843933st.22.022.17188","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.4467/20843933st.22.022.17188","url":null,"abstract":"Slovenian Patriotism in the Socialist Yugoslavia\u0000\u0000The article presents an analysis of the essence and form of Slovenian patriotism in the socialist Yugoslavia, with particular emphasis on the 1980s (when the crisis of the Yugoslav idea becomes evident). It deals with issues related to the forms and manifestations of the patriotism of a small nation such as the Slovenes, who for most of their history were under the domination of larger and stronger nations. The argument is divided into five parts. The first, introductory one contains a brief outline of the ideological foundations of the Yugoslav federation, which were also important for the Slovenian patriotism at that time. For this purpose, the most important ideas and values promoted by Titoism in politics and education are recalled, and the progressive national and cultural emancipation of Slovenes is indicated. The second part discusses the views and positions of Slovenian intellectuals (Edvard Kocbek, Primož Kozak and Drago Jančar) fundamental to the understanding of the discussed issue. They are an expression of a deep reflection on the condition and position of a small nation in the specific conditions of a multinational federation, but also with reference to a wider (i.e. European and American) framework. The third part shows the Yugoslav background of discussions on Slovenian patriotism, which, in the rest of Yugoslavia in the 1980s, was considered nationalism shattering the federal unity. In the fourth part, the symbolic forms of “love for the homeland” in Slovenia (including those in tourism and sports) are cited, emphasizing their importance in the process of shaping the national awareness. The last part outlines the contemporary perception of Slovenian patriotism in the period of socialist Yugoslavia. Niniejszy artykuł koncentruje się na francuskich wyprawach na Islandię, przedsięwziętych w toku niemal dwustu lat. W centrum uwagi znajduje się wizerunek Islandii w oczach Francuzów, refleksji tej towarzyszy zaś próba ukazania ewolucji obrazu wyspy we francuskim piśmiennictwie podróżniczym od XVII do połowy XIX wieku. Velimirovicia idea ta także na początku XXI wieku określa specyficzne kolektywistyczne myślenie o „historycznym przekleństwie” Serbów, wynikającym z „dziedziczenia grzechów” i odpowiedzialności zbiorowej.\u0000\u0000Petar II Petrović Njegoš’s Work as an Inspiration to Twentieth-century Serbian Historiosophical Conceptions\u0000\u0000The idea of the bond with ancestors, along with the categories of sin, suffering and redemption (in the soteriological interpretation) is one of the crucial ones in Petar II Petrović Njegoš’s poem “The Mountain Wreath” and constitutes the fundamental point of reference for the contemporary Serbian historiosophers (among others, R. Samardžić and V. Jerotić) as well. Updated and somewhat modified in the first half of the 20th century by bishop N. Artykuł ma na celu przedstawienie jego wizerunku z perspektywy rzeczywistości diaspory. Bez względu na uwarunkowania, które determinują losy protagonistów – omawianych w niniejszym artykule – opowiadań, towarzyszy im wspólny motyw wyobcowania obejmujący wiele płaszczyzn życia. W prozie Michy Josefa Berdyczewskiego bohaterem jest z reguły młody mężczyzna buntujący się przeciwko religijnej mentalności żydowskiej diaspory, a jednocześnie niepotrafiący zaadaptować się do świeckiego świata. Wybrane teksty źródłowe zostały przetłumaczone, poddane gruntownej analizie i porównane pod kątem wspomnianego toposu. Za punkt wyjścia do badań przyjęto stadia wykorzenienia opracowane przez Szimona Halkina. Artykuł stanowi przyczynek do dalszych prac badawczych nad taluszem występującym w hebrajskiej prozie także u innych pisarzy, na przykład Mordechaja Fajerberga lub Uriego Nissana Gnessina.\u0000\u0000At the Crossroads: The Image of the Uprooted Hero (talush) Based on the Prose of Micha Josef Berdyczewski\u0000\u0000New Hebrew prose at the turn of the 19th and 20th centuries is characterized by the presence of a specific type of literary character called the “uprooted hero”(Hebr. talush). The article aims to present his image from the perspective of the diaspora reality. Regardless of the conditions that determine the fate of the protagonists of the stories discussed, they are accompanied by a common motive of alienation pertaining to many different spheres of life. In Micha Josef Berdyczewski’s prose, the protagonist is usually presented as a young man rebelling against the religious mentality of the Jewish diaspora, but at the same time unable to adapt to the secular world. Selected source texts have been translated, thoroughly analyzed and compared in terms of the aforementioned literary topos. The starting point of the research are the stages of uprooting described by Simon Halkin. Najbardziej poczytna okazała się wśród nich Marie Sophie Schwartz, początkowo jako autorka literatury rozrywkowej, później zaś jako głosicielka progresywnych idei na temat pracy, równości społecznej i wyzwolenia kobiet, które dobrze rezonowały z propagowanymi w popowstaniowej Polsce ideami pozytywistycznymi. W artykule zastosowana została perspektywa Translation Studies traktująca przekłady jako dokumenty polisystemu literackiego kultury docelowej, której normy leżą u podstaw decyzji translatorskich. Tak więc refleksji poddany jest zarówno wybór tłumaczonych utworów, przekłady tytułów, jak i szczegóły tłumaczeń. Analiza porównawcza dwóch różnych tłumaczeń powieści Emancipationsvurmen pozwala sformułować pewne wnioski na temat świadomości emancypacyjnej, która stała się przedmiotem debaty w latach 70. XIX wieku, a w latach 60. była jeszcze słabo obecna w kulturze polskiej. Przekłady z tych okresów reprezentują liczne przesunięcia w celu wyeksponowania lub – odpowiednio – osłabienia emancypacyjnego wydźwięku powieści, co pozwala ujrzeć Schwartz jako pisarkę o profilu społecznym, propagującą w duchu pozytywizmu.\u0000\u0000Swedish Mothers of Stories on Polish Land. The Phenomenon of Marie Sophie Schwartz in a Transcultural Perspective\u0000\u0000The article outlines a surge in the popularity of Swedish women writers in the second half of the 19th century in the territories inhabited by Poles, which resulted in numerous Polish translations, retranslations and editions of their works. The most widely read among them was Marie Sophie Schwartz, initially identified as the author of entertainment literature, then as an advocate of progressive ideas on labour, social equality, and women’s emancipation, which resonated with ideas of positivism propagated in the Polish territories in the post-1863-insurrection against the Russian empire. The article adopts Translation Studies as the theoretical approach, which treats translations as texts in the literary polysystem of the target culture that determines translatorial decisions. Thus, the selection of translated works, translations of titles and details of translations are subject of reflection. A comparative analysis of two different translations of Schwatrz’s Emancipationsvurmen enables us to draw conclusions regarding the emancipatory consciousness, which in the Polish culture was the subject of debates in the 1870s, but was still hardly present in it in the 1860s.
