The Secure Socket Layer (SSL) protocol is one of the most viable solutions to provide the required level of confidentiality, message integrity and endpoint authentication. The two main alternatives for providing SSL security are the endto- end and the accelerated solutions, which enable different costperformance tradeoffs, where performance is intended as the overall delay that the customer experiences to complete the transaction. The accelerated solution is enabled by special devices (SSL acceleration cards) placed in network nodes. In this paper, we propose an optimization algorithm, which designs the ICT infrastructure minimizing the total cost, given a target performance objective defined as the end-to-end delay for the completion of the distributed application tasks. We apply this method to evaluate the efficiency of SSL acceleration versus end-to-end SSL, in order to determine in what conditions SSL acceleration is convenient. Our algorithm performs joint optimization of computing and communication resources, whilst in literature hardware and network are typically optimized separately.","PeriodicalId":308819,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-17","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124133326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to achieve efficient broadband communications over PL channels in Small-Office Home-Office environments, it is necessary to improve the indoor PL channel models. Then the proposed methodology and model makes practical to generate a large database of channel responses for statistical analysis. This work presents additionally, measurements of low voltage network cable parameters to complete and corroborate the model. Finally the identifications results were validated theoretically and were contrasted with related works in the lower range of frequencies (DC-30MHz). The proposed method extends to 100MHz the results of the previous works, with low knowledge about the physical characteristics of PL channel.","PeriodicalId":308819,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124884724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

But with the implementation of the Next Generation Networks by most operators around the world, QoS for different services and applications must fulfill. In order to deal with this problem, we simulate end to end QoS parameters, according to ITU Y.1540 and Y.1541 recommendations and different scheduling algorithms proposed by manufacturers and the literature. In this paper we show the results for such simulations for voice over IP service in different load conditions.","PeriodicalId":308819,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124072463","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recently a protocol that implements service differentiation by appropriate modification of the sliding window size considering the data transfer priority, called TCP TS-Prio (Transient & Static Priority) protocol, was proposed. In this paper, we propose a methodology that can be used to estimate key performance parameters, such as packet loss, queueing delays, window sizes, and throughputs. Our approach models a single TCP TS-Prio source using a Markovian chain. The superposition and interaction of several TCP sources, with service differentiation, is then analyzed. The analysis shows that TCP TS-Prio is able to offer service differentiation depending on the network congestion.","PeriodicalId":308819,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134242779","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The increase of services and applications such as High Definition TV (HDTV) and Three Dimensions TV (3DTV) lead to the definition of DVB-T2. This new standard improves capacity and quality of the services; however, it requires a new network infrastructure. DVB-T was designed for fixes reception, with a physical layer which does not have enough robustness for mobile services. In this article, the following technical solutions are proposed: hierarchical modulation, Scalable Video Coding (SVC), and forward error correction mechanisms in application layer (AL-FEC) in order to offer mobile DVB-T services to vehicles and Local Area Services (LSA) in Single Frequency Networks (SFN). The results are obtained through field measurements, lab tests and dynamic simulations in the city of Valencia (Spain).","PeriodicalId":308819,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127272757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The basic model of the CRN provides signaling through cognitive pilot channels (CPCs) distributed in every available channel or frequency slot. The control is performed by using frequency-division and time-division multiplexing techniques. This control, as expected, permits the utilization of the CRN by heterogeneous cognitive radio user (CRU) devices. We had designed a CRN able to work with today's available technologies and CRU devices that use different frequency bands of operation. However, in terms of energy, this control can be very inefficient due to the fact that at specific periods of time, the network might be completely used. Results of the performance of the network will be compared to a basic CRN model in which CPCs are used for control in every available channel.","PeriodicalId":308819,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications","volume":"10 7 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121144892","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One common approach to implement TC is to select a small subset of nodes that can accomplish the global objective of the network and put the rest of the nodes in a low energy consumption mode to use their energy in the future. One way to select this subset of nodes is by solving the Minimum Connected Dominating Set problem (MCDS). This paper presents a Mixed Integer Programming (MIP) formulation that finds the optimal solution to this problem. The formulation is proposed as a benchmarking tool to compare the performance of existing and new heuristics that approximate the solution to the same problem. In fact, the paper compares the performance of three well-known CDS-based topology construction protocols versus the MIP-MCDS formulation. The results show that, in terms of the size of the CDS, the distance between the optimal and the approximate solutions increases with the communication radius and the number of nodes. In terms of the solution time, for low density and high node degree topologies the mathematical programming formulation is comparable, and sometimes better, to that of the heuristics. However, in topologies with low node degree and high node density the heuristic solutions outperform the mathematical programming solution.","PeriodicalId":308819,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications","volume":"4 10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131611421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

One of the features of MAC layer, this standard, is that it is designed to differentiate service among traffic categories with different multimedia requirements. Based on these assumptions and considering that the standard does not specify a scheduling algorithm, a new scheduler with call admission control was proposed based on Latency-Rate (LR) server theory and system characteristics specified by the standard for systems using the WirelessMAN-OFDM (Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing) air interface. The proposed scheduling algorithm calculates the time frame (TF) in order to maximize the number of stations allocated in the system while managing the delay required for each user. Properties of this proposal have been investigated theoretically and through simulations. A set of simulations is presented with both Constant Bit Rate (CBR) and Variable Bit Rate (VBR) and performance comparisons among with different delays and different TFs. The results show that the delay upper bound can be achieved for a large range of networks load with bandwidth optimization.","PeriodicalId":308819,"journal":{"name":"2010 IEEE Latin-American Conference on Communications","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124025039","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
