The University Library of Frankfurt has been engaged in the support of ebooks since 2004 but has taken greater financial and technical efforts in the past two years to expand its supply of ebooks in the interest of the University. In 2009 almost 19.000 ebooks were licenced and accessible for authorized library users. Of course, there is statistical evidence on the usage of these books, but quantitative measures alone do not provide adequate answers to the question on how users cope with the concomitant technical challenges and their overall satisfaction with the selection of ebooks the library has made up to now. A survey amongst students and staff of the University was conceived to explore what our users think about ebooks in general and especially about the library's job in supporting this new form of publication. The results of this survey are summarized in the article. With it at the same time it was a journey to the origins of the early information society. Otherwise the conference connected information history with the history of culture, architecture and art by referring to various analogies between analog and digital spaces. Topical starting point was the Belgian Paul Otlet as founder of documentation around the turn of the 20th century. Wer sich daran versucht, tut gut daran, sich uber bestimmte Prinzipien und technische Mittel zu informieren, die das fortgeschrittene Web ihm heute bietet. Das Internet, das World Wide Web und das moderne Web 2.0 sind in einer fast zwanzig Jahre dauernden Kollaboration einer globalen Gemeinschaft von Entwicklern und Anwendern entstanden. Es enthalt heute eine Fulle sofort einsetzbarer Komponenten, von der „Benutzerdefinierten Google-Suche Beta“ mit Google‘s PageRanking auf ausgewahlten Web-Seiten bis hin zum automatisierten Web-Server mit Content-Management fur das „Mitmach-Web“. [3] Digitale Veröffentlichungen haben im letzten Jahrzehnt sowohl im wissenschaftlichen Publikationswesen als auch in der allgemeinen Informationsversorgung stetig an Bedeutung gewonnen. Die Gedächtnisorganisationen sind nicht nur zunehmend mit digitalen Publikationen wie e-journals, e-books und anderen textbasierten Dokumenten konfrontiert, sondern auch mit einer Vielzahl an unterschiedlichen digitalen Objekten wie wissenschaftlichen Primärdaten, statistischen Daten, virtuellen Lehrund Lernobjekten, administrativen und geschäftlichen Akten und Unterlagen (z.B. E-Government), persönlichen Dokumenten (z.B. „elektronische Manuskripte“, Vorstufen zu literarischen Werken, EMail-Korrespondenz), Daten aus geographischen Informationssystemen, digitalen Kunst, digitalen Audio-, Videound Multimediadateien, Softwareapplikationen (z.B. Datenbanken, Simulationen) und – nicht zu vergessen – das World Wide Web als Wissensund Informationsbörse. Aufgrund dieses breiten digitalen Angebots wird die Sicherstellung der Langzeitverfügbarkeit digitaler Publikationen immer mehr zu einer selbstständigen Aktionslinie im jeweiligen Aufgabenspektrum von Bibliotheken, Archiven und Museen, ohne dass bereits endgültige Lösungen bei der digitalen Langzeitarchivierung vorliegen würden. The evaluation and comparison are based on consistent criteria and a chosen topic containing a special issue. The analysis includes various online sources (general websites, websites of environmental organizations and offices, commercial online databases) and print resources (monographs). The consistent quality matrix, which was developed in the context of the lecture, forms the basis of the quality comparison. Among the evaluation criteria are the author, the treatment, the accurateness, the timeliness, the relevance and the completeness of the used information. In reaction, the German system of special collection libraries has put up Virtual Subject Libraries. In March 2007, the Virtual Library of Biology was released on the internet by the University Library Johann Christian Senckenberg, Frankfurt. In collaboration with several partner institutions, this service provides a nation-wide unified access point to scientific resources distributed in libraries and on the internet.
