These complex risks and harms are enabled by many factors including inadequate regulations, the non-compliant practices of the industry, and the lack of research and guidelines for cyber-secure, privacy-preserving, and safe products. In this paper, we review the existing regulations related to FemTech in the United Kingdom, EU, and Switzerland and identify the gaps. We run experiments on a range of FemTech devices and apps and identify several exploitative practices. We advocate for the policymakers to explicitly acknowledge and accommodate the risks of these technologies in the relevant regulations.","PeriodicalId":308773,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in The Internet of Things","volume":"78 2","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-03-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140234137","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Current European Union legislation as well as voluntary manufacturer interoperability initiatives fail to address user desires for adaptability, augmentability, and open-ended repurpoposing of Internet of Things (IoT) devices. We therefore argue in this paper for a Right to Improve that aims to fill the gaps left by today’s laws, conforms to consumer demands, and is powerful enough (by its statutory nature) to cause actual change. Our contribution is twofold. First, we summarize the relevant legislation (Ecodesign Directive, Sale of Goods Directive, and Right to Repair). We review the academic literature, and highlight technical and motivational factors that support a Right to Improve. Second, we suggest and discuss a number of open problems in need of consideration by academics, practitioners, companies, governing bodies, and the general public. A future formulation of the Right to Improve should take into account and balance the various contrasting views for efficacy on different levels, e.g., environmental benefit vs. economic risk. Change enabled by a Right to Improve may greatly enhance the usefulness of devices during their use phase, empowers consumers to create and compose devices and services to their own taste and requirements, makes devices more economically and ecologically sustainable by extending their useful lifetime, and creates new business opportunities.","PeriodicalId":308773,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in The Internet of Things","volume":"18 12","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-02-19","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140451882","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The investigation utilizes CNN, RNN + LSTM, GloVe, and BERT algorithms to analyze sentiment and predict sentiment classes in public reactions when the Commission was announced and after the final report’s release. Results reveal that the emotional class “joy” predominated initially, reflecting a positive response to the inquiry, while “sadness” and “anger” dominated after the report, indicating public dissatisfaction with the findings. The algorithms consistently predicted negative, neutral, and positive sentiments, with BERT showing exceptional precision, recall, and F1-scores. However, GloVe displayed weaker and less consistent performance. Criticisms of the Commission’s efforts relate to its inability to expose the full extent of money laundering, potentially influenced by biased testimonies and a narrow investigation scope. The public’s sentiments highlight the awareness raised by the Commission and underscore the importance of its recommendations in combating money laundering. Future research should consider broader stakeholder perspectives and objective assessments of the findings.","PeriodicalId":308773,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in The Internet of Things","volume":"61 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-11-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139250439","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study, conducted in collaboration with a leading Singaporean urban farming company, introduces an IoT-based automated farming system. This system incorporates an agnostic growbox and a web application dashboard for intelligent monitoring of crop growth. The presented approach provides an open-source and cost-effective solution for a scalable urban farming architecture. The agnostic growbox system offers both accessibility and scalability, utilizing cost-effective and modular hardware components with open-source software, thereby increasing customizability and accessibility compared to commercial growbox products. The authors anticipate that this approach will find diverse applications within the realm of urban farming, streamlining, and improving the efficiency of urban farming through automation. Methods: The study employs an integrated solution that incorporates an image analytics approach for the proficient and accurate classification of crop disease phenotypes, specifically targeting chlorosis and tip burn in lettuce crops. This approach is designed to be hardware- and software-efficient, obviating the necessity for extensive image datasets for model training. The image analytics approach is compared favourably with a machine learning approach, evaluating the accuracy of categorization using the same dataset. Additionally, the approach is assessed in terms of time and cost efficiency in comparison to machine learning techniques. Results: The image analytics approach demonstrated notable scalability, time efficiency, and accuracy in the detection of crop diseases within urban farming. Early detection, particularly of chlorosis and tip burn, proves critical in mitigating crop wastage. The results indicate that the integrated solution provided a reliable and effective means of disease classification, with significant advantages over traditional machine learning approaches in terms of time and cost efficiency. Discussion: The presented IoT-based automated farming system, incorporating the agnostic growbox and image analytics approach, holds promise for revolutionizing urban farming practices. Its open-source nature, coupled with cost-effectiveness and scalability, positions it as a practical solution for urban farming architecture. The system's ability to efficiently detect and classify crop diseases, particularly chlorosis and tip burn, offers a substantial contribution to reducing wastage and enhancing crop yield. Overall, this approach paves the way for a more efficient and sustainable future for urban farming through the integration of automation and advanced analytics. Further exploration and implementation of this technology in diverse urban farming settings is warranted.","PeriodicalId":308773,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in The Internet of Things","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-10-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134908561","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This raises the question of what is needed to realize this vision using serverless technologies and leveraging semantic description tools that would eventually complement standards to describe such orchestration in a similar way to microservices (e.g., using TOSCA). This study analyzes the different requirements necessary in such automation description and tests them in some practical use cases in a particular application (vertical agriculture). It also provides a set of analyzed instructions that might be incorporated into a description language or become a definition format for an automation orchestration description to provide the necessary process deployment options and interaction chains between multiple devices and data sources. These instructions are analyzed by implementing an execution deployment engine from the intelligence orchestration concept. The practical utilization of such instructions is verified and tested with the use case.","PeriodicalId":308773,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in The Internet of Things","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135387714","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A drawback of increased solar penetration is the potential for supply-demand mismatches in the grid due to the intermittent nature of solar generation. While energy storage can be used to mask such problems, we argue that there is also a need to explicitly control the rate of solar generation of each solar array in order to achieve high penetration while also handling supply-demand mismatches. To address this issue, we present the notion of smart solar arrays that can actively modulate their solar output based on the notion of proportional fairness. We present a decentralized algorithm based on Lagrangian optimization that enables each smart solar array to make local decisions on its fair share of solar power it can inject into the grid and then present a sense-broadcast-respond protocol to implement our decentralized algorithm into smart solar arrays. We also study the benefits of using energy storage when we rate control solar. To do so, we present a decentralized algorithm to charge and discharge batteries for each smart solar. Our evaluation on a city-scale dataset shows that our approach enables 2.6× more solar penetration while causing smart arrays to reduce their output by as little as 12.4%. By employing an adaptive gradient approach, our decentralized algorithm has 3 to 30× faster convergence. Finally, we demonstrate energy storage can help netmeter more solar energy while ensuring fairness and grid constraints are met.","PeriodicalId":308773,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in The Internet of Things","volume":"112 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-28","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121742012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, leveraging state-of-the-art building energy-efficiency techniques can be expensive and require installing new equipment, resulting in only a small percentage of energy-efficient commercial buildings. To address this challenge, our paper focuses on empowering building occupants to become informed change-makers that drive building efficiency through an IoT-based solution. By leveraging the data collected from low-cost sensors, we envision creating personalized dashboards and interventions for individuals, fostering energy transparency and empowering people to optimize their space usage while reducing emissions. Moreover, we can leverage human flexibility and flexible environments to further improve space usage and realize energy and emissions reduction opportunities. Thus, by enabling human-building interaction, our approach will be more effective in achieving the full potential of reducing energy and emissions in existing buildings.","PeriodicalId":308773,"journal":{"name":"Frontiers in The Internet of Things","volume":"114 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122915385","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
