Three important performance related characteristics: (1) output power leveling with a feedback loop, (2) gain optimization by input polarization control, and (3) anti-reflective (AR) coating of the amplifier facets, can all be controlled using the integrated detector as a monitor. Two kinds of amplification technique has been proposed: distributed amplification[2] and localized amplification[3]. The former offers much longer amplification spacing than the latter, because the former’s gain is distributed almost constantly along the fiber, while the latter’s gain is located locally, which leads to radiating dispersive waves[3]. In this paper, we report 20Gb/s optical soliton data transmission over a total distance of 70km utilizing two Raman amplifiers for fiber-loss compensation. The transmission distance corresponds to 19 soliton periods with our experimental parameters, and this value of 19 soliton periods is larger than any previously reported optical soliton data transmission. Raman gain as high as 10dB with forward and backward pumping by 160mW laser diodes was obtained by using a high Δn dispersion-shifted single-mode fiber as the transmission line. During the last year, an important effort was carried out worldwide and significant improvements have already been achieved from a better design and fabrication of the active waveguide [1-4]. More recently, we have obtained polarisation insensitive GaInAsP/InP TWA's realized by gas source molecular beam epitaxy (GSMBE) with a high internal gain (28 dB) and a gain wavelength ripple of 3 dB for both TE and TM modes at a very low forward current of only 50 mA [5]. Device development has not ceased however [4] and the performance of semiconductor amplifiers has improved considerably. In addition there are important applications for which doped fibre amplifiers are not suitable at present e.g. at 1.3 µm, and others for which they will never be suitable, e.g. as fast optical switches. At a minimum, these devices need to have low insertion loss at the doped-fiber pump and signal wavelengths, λp and λs. Small splice losses between the coupler input pigtail and the incoming telecommunication fiber at λs and between the coupler output pigtail and the Er-doped gain fiber at λs and λp are important to maximize amplifier signal-to-noise and to efficiently use available pump power. In addition, in high-gain amplifier applications, coupler backscatter and crosstalk may also impact noise. The choice of host composition has always been an important consideration. Silicates are the oldest and best understood glasses, and the first glass lasers used silicate compositions selected for high rare earth solubility and long lifetimes for the metastable state. The use of phosphate glass significantly improved the performance of early bulk Er3+ lasers [4] and it has become the most common host for bulk glass lasers doped with Er3+ and Nd3+. Although outstanding performance has been achieved using single-mode silica fiber, silica is a poor host for most activator ions, particularly rare earths. The influence of glass composition on the properties of Er3+ fiber amplifiers will be considered with particular emphasis placed upon silica; a more detailed discussion can be found in Ref.
