Abstract
The rare-earth ion doped silica fiber amplifier is being studied as a very attractive device for use in telecommunication systems, because it has high gain, polarization-insensitive, low-noise and low-insertion loss characteristics. However, the disadvantage of a narrow bandwidth has been pointed out for Er3+-doped silica fibers. There is also a disadvantage with Nd3+-doped silica fibers in that it is very difficult to use them to obtain a gain around 1.3 μm.
