The accumulation of loss through the many tapping points in such passive architectures has, until now, limited these networks to only a modest size. However, recent advances in optical amplifiers[2], both semiconductor and active fibre based, has provided flexibility in the design of such networks by extending the available power budget. A single, long, erbium-doped fibre amplifier employed as the communications backbone of the bus is particularly suited to this application[3] because the gain is distributed along the entire length of the network and is not specific to a particular location.","PeriodicalId":308628,"journal":{"name":"Optical Amplifiers and Their Applications","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116870927","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traveling wave type semiconductor laser amplifiers (TWAs) are very attractive because high signal gain over 25 dB and high saturation output power over 10 dBm can be easily obtained. However, TWAs have an inherent problem compared with fiber amplifiers; the signal gain of the TE mode is usually larger than that of the TM mode. This is due to the mode confinement factor difference between the TE and TM modes. Various approaches to eliminate this problem have been attempted : introduction of a thick active layer1-2) , a large optical cavity (LOC) structure3), a hybrid configuration using two TWAs4), and so on.","PeriodicalId":308628,"journal":{"name":"Optical Amplifiers and Their Applications","volume":"65 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127084690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main advantages of EDFA are polarization-insensitive high gain, low insertion loss, low-noise, and a wide bandwidth in the loss-minimum region of silica fibers. In order to evaluate the performance of the EDFAs, high output power, high gain coefficient, and low noise characteristics are important. From these, a high gain coefficient EDFA is attractive since it offers the possibility of a low-noise high gain EDFA with a very low pump power as a preamplifier. With a view to realizing a high gain coefficient EDFA, the gain characteristics of a high NA (Numerical Aperture) EDFA have been investigated [5]~[7]. The high NA EDFA has a small spotsize so that efficient pumping is realized, resulting in a high gain coefficient.","PeriodicalId":308628,"journal":{"name":"Optical Amplifiers and Their Applications","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127183370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It has been shown that the signal gain achieved in such amplifiers may be of the order of 40dB or more(1), with saturation powers as large as 12.5 dBm. One interesting feature of such amplifiers is the insensitivity to the signal polarization state: by rotating the linear polarization of the signal, relative to a linearly polarized pump, gain variations of less than 0.2 dB have been measured(2).","PeriodicalId":308628,"journal":{"name":"Optical Amplifiers and Their Applications","volume":"314 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132018003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It offers high gain, high efficiency, low noise, low cross-talk, and high saturation power. It has been used in both land and under-sea systems demonstrations, and is commercially available from a number of manufacturers. In distribution experiments splits of up to 39 million ways have been demonstrated for only two stages of amplification [1]. In short it has revolutionised thinking on future optical fibre networks. Unfortunately the vast majority of current operational systems are deployed in the 1.3μm window, and some fiber designs may prohibit upgrading to 1.55μm. A similar amplifier for 1.3μm has been much more elusive. Examination of the observed energy levels of the trivalent rare-earth ions reveals three principal candidates; neodymium with a known laser transition around 1.32μm, praseodymium with known laser transitions but not until very recently at 1.3μm, and promethium with known laser transitions at 0.933μm and 1.098μm, but not around 1.3μm. Promethium is radioactive and has not been studied in fibers, leaving two practical possibilities for fiber amplifiers for 1.3μm.","PeriodicalId":308628,"journal":{"name":"Optical Amplifiers and Their Applications","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123569757","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The noise figure of the fiber amplifier is a parameter that must be considered in these systems to optimize overall system performance. Noise figures of an EDFA pumped at 1480 nm and 980 nm were reported to be near 5 dB[6], and 3 dB[7], respectively. However, these numbers were measured when the amplifiers were operated in the linear region. An EDFA may be operated in the gain saturation region when it is used as a power amplifier in the subscriber loop[3] [5], or when it is one of the latter stages of many cascaded amplifiers in a transmission system. In the latter case, the amplifier gain saturates because of the accumulated amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise, which may be due to the finite passband of interstage optical filters, or because there is not enough inter-stage loss to compensate the amplifier gain. Under the above conditions, questions arise as to whether the amplifier noise figure increases while the gain is saturated, and what are the parameters that control this noise figure degradation. The subject of this paper is to examine these questions.","PeriodicalId":308628,"journal":{"name":"Optical Amplifiers and Their Applications","volume":"29 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124915632","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Traveling-wave (TW) SOAs are particularly suitable for multi-channel coherent systems, where several tens of lightwave signals with different frequencies may be amplified by the TW-SOA after multiplexing [1]. Recently, a photonic integrated circuit with 4 DBR lasers, a combiner and a TW-SOA has been reported as an excellent example of the use of TW-SOAs in frequency division multiplexing (FDM) transmitters [2]. It has been pointed out, however, that for close channel spacing and at high amplifier input power level, there can be significant crosstalk among the channels arising from nondegenerate four-wave mixing (FWM) in the TW-SOA [3]. In this paper, we evaluated the FWM signal powers, including first and higher orders, under CW condition and with FSK modulation at 155 Mb/s. We find that a channel spacing larger than 10 GHz is necessary to avoid crosstalk due to FWM in a conventional TW-SOA with a high total input power level of about -7 dBm at the amplifier facet.","PeriodicalId":308628,"journal":{"name":"Optical Amplifiers and Their Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114279250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
