The amplifier has a small signal gain in excess of 25 dB and a 3-dB saturation output power (P3\u0000 dB\u0000 ) exceeding 25 mW. In general, amplifiers fabricated from bulk epilayer, buried heterostructure devices have high gain per unit length and small saturation output power. A benchmark for such an amplifier operating at 1.5μm wavelength is a 300 μm long buried heterostructure device, which had small-signal gain of 24.5 dB with P3\u0000 dB\u0000 of 9 mW.[1] Optical amplifiers fabricated from multiple quantum well laser diodes have significantly higher values of P3\u0000 dB\u0000 , at the expense of greatly reduced gain. [2,3] The properties of the multiple quantum well optical amplifiers arise, in large part, from the small mode confinement factors, Γ, for these devices, which reduce the gain (proportional to Γ) and increase P3\u0000 dB\u0000 (proportional to 1/Γ). Thus, a 625 μm long multiple quantum well amplifier with Γ = 0.05 demonstrated small-signal gain of 19 dB and P3\u0000 dB\u0000 of 42 mW. [2] By reducing Γ to 0.02, a 500 μm long multiple quantum well device with P3\u0000 dB\u0000 of 115 mW, but with gain of only 8 dB, was reported. In-line EDFA application is clearly identified for long undersea links. However, repeaterless transmissions have many applications, especially over 250 km lengths. Compared to direct detection, heterodyne detection allows to achieve a very high receiver sensitivity, increasing the overall link budget [2], Optical amplifiers highly improve this budget, particularly by compensating for the insertion loss of the external phase modulator in DPSK systems. We report a 565 Mbit/s DPSK transmission experiment at 1.532 μm using an EDFA module at the emission, operating in gain saturation regime. Pumped by laser diodes, this optical post-amplifier delivers an amplified output power exceeding +13 dBm, leading to a repeaterless power budget of 62.9 dB. This gives the potentiality to design over 350 km repeaterless links by use of a pure silica core fiber.

The simultaneous transmission of baseband digital signals and SCM, FM video channels on one wavelength has been proposed as a bandwidth efficient and cost effective way to distribute high speed digital signals and a large menu of video channels to subscribers [1], [2], [3], but previous experiments required high bandwidth optoelectronics and had limited power budgets. Erbium doped fiber amplifiers (EDFAs) with their high gain, insensitivity to modulation formats and ease of integration with lightwave systems offer an elegant way to overcome splitting losses in distribution systems. We report an experiment where a single laser was modulated with a signal with RF bandwith of 2 GHz containing 622 Mb/s (SONET STS-12 rate) at baseband, 10 SCM FM NTSC video channels and 3 SCM FM HDTV components. The signals were further transmitted over 15 km of fiber and distributed to 8192 terminals. Recently, over 2000km repeaterless transmission experiments have been performed with EDFA [1]. Two pump wavelengths appear truly excellent because of their very high performances and laser diode pumping feasibility : 1.48μm and 0.98μm, each of them having its own specificity [2]. Today’s best reported pump efficiency are 2.6dB/mW for color center laser pumping near 1.48μm [3] and 4.9dB/mW for a 0.98μm laser diode pumped amplifier [4]. The increase of the last year published EDFA performances clearly demonstrate that we may be far from optimized fibers.

Neodymium-doped fibers remain potential candidates for this function despite the problem of excited state absorption (ESA) near 1.3 μm which can lead to loss rather than gain, particularly at shorter wavelengths [1]. The effects of ESA are known to be a function of glass composition: Aluminum/phosphorus-doped silica [2-4] and phosphate glass [5] exhibit gain at shorter wavelengths than Ge-doped silica, and fluorozirconate glass has provided gain at wavelengths as short as 1.32 μm [6-9]. Despite these results, the practicality of Nd3+-doped fiber amplifiers is still in question. We have addressed this issue by constructing a fiber amplifier model which exploits the availability of measured cross sections for a wide variety of Nd3+-doped glasses.

The self phase modulation is due to the dynamic change in the carrier density resulting from gain saturation that occurs in the amplifier. It is possible to obtain phase modulation of another beam (signal beam) that differs in frequency or in polarization with respect to the beam that experiences gain saturation (pump beam). This situation is referred to as cross phase modulation in an amplifying medium; that is to say, the intensity of a strong pulse affects the phase of a weaker pulse. Cross phase modulation due to the Kerr effect in nonlinear media such as glass and liquids has been reported [2] and was referred to as induced phase modulation. In this paper we report the observation of cross phase modulation in a semiconductor laser amplifier. It was the intent of the authors to begin research on a potentially integrable tunable chirping element on a tens of picosecond time scale. Other attempts at making a tunable chirping element could be realized using electrooptic phase modulators.
