This study aims to identify the common triggers of asthma in the environment. Methods: The study was descriptive cross-sectional, with a study population of 836-registered Nigerian primary school pupils from 39 randomly selected schools in Kano metropolis. Information was obtained from the pupils and their parents/caregivers using questionnaires. The data obtained were analyzed using Statistical Package for Social Science (SPSS) version 16 developed by IBM cooperation. Qualitative data (sex, social class, and suspected trigger factors) were represented as percentages, Chi-square (χ2 ) test was used to determine associations between the categorical variables and a P ≤ 0.05 was presumed statistically significant. Results: Asthma was diagnosed in 101 pupils. There were 56 (55.4%) males and 45 (44.6%) females, and a corresponding male: female ratio of 1.24:1. It was observed that common cold, household dust exposure, physical exercise as well as exposure to wood smoke and insecticides were the most common trigger factors but patients can have more than one trigger factor for their acute exacerbations. Conclusion: Against the background of the common disease provocateurs, it is suggested that the relevant control strategies along with the required avoidance recommendations of the common risk agents be pursued by the appropriate health policy-making bodies and managing physicians, respectively. For maximum relevance to the vulnerable population, these control strategies may be usefully included as part of a comprehensive package of the school health program.","PeriodicalId":307187,"journal":{"name":"Tropical Journal of Medical Research","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126914036","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This could occur on a background of cystic kidneys, known as autosomal-dominant polycystic kidney disease (ADPKD) or without the presence of cysts in any other organ of the body, known as autosomal-dominant PLD. Irrespective of the type of the polycystic liver, the natural course of these disorders is similar. Both genders are affected, but the female gender has a higher prevalence. Majority of patients with PLD are asymptomatic and can be managed conservatively, but a minority could develop massive hepatomegaly and attendant symptoms from compression of the surrounding organs. We present a patient with massive polycystic liver on a background of ADPKD.","PeriodicalId":307187,"journal":{"name":"Tropical Journal of Medical Research","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132575332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it may not be surprising for caregivers declining medical care for their children. This study therefore seeks to determine the prevalence of signing against medical advice (SAMA) and common reasons for SAMA in our health center. Materials and Methods: This was a retrospective review of all cases of SAMA seen over a 3-year period from January 2010 to December 2012. Results: There were 59 cases of SAMA comprising 32 (54.2%) males and 27 (45.8%) females, male to female ratio of 1.2:1. Low birth weight (26%), birth asphyxia (12%), and neonatal sepsis (11%) were the most common diagnoses associated with cases of SAMA. The cost of medical care was the most common reason of asking for SAMA (66.0%), followed by preference for alternative care (17%). The year 2011 recorded the highest case of SAMA with 33 cases reported while 2010 and 2012 had 13 cases each. January 2012 had the highest cases of SAMA. Conclusion: SAMA is of great concern; this was observed more among newborns with diagnoses of low birth weight and birth asphyxia. Furthermore, the cost of care was a major reason for asking for SAMA, hence a drawback in delivering effective healthcare.","PeriodicalId":307187,"journal":{"name":"Tropical Journal of Medical Research","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124155772","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study is aimed at determining the prevalence of micronutrient deficiency among children with PEM. Materials and Methods: The study was comparative and cross-sectional in design, which assessed 45 children with PEM attending the pediatric outpatient clinic of Hasiya Bayero Paediatric Hospital and 45 \"apparently healthy\" children presenting for routine vaccination. Patients were classified as having either marasmus or kwashiorkor using the Wellcome classification. Five milliliters of blood was collected for the analysis of serum calcium, iron, and zinc using spectrophotometry, as well as for Vitamin A using Bassey et al.′s procedure. Results: Mean age, height, and weight were higher in malnourished than the control group (P < 0.05). Similarly, levels of zinc, calcium, and Vitamin A were statistically higher (P < 0.05) in malnourished than the control group. The prevalence of micronutrient deficiency (PEM vs. control) was found to be: calcium (80% vs. 55%), iron (46% vs. 24%), Vitamin A (80% vs. 55%), and zinc (48% vs. 24%). The prevalence of micronutrient deficiency (kwashiorkor vs. marasmus) was found to be: calcium (100% vs. 71%), iron (50% vs. 45%), Vitamin A (90% vs. 77%), and zinc (70% vs. 42%). Conclusion: Micronutrient deficiency is more common in PEM children than healthy controls.","PeriodicalId":307187,"journal":{"name":"Tropical Journal of Medical Research","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125120046","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients and Methods: Colonoscopy was performed on consenting patients using Olympus Exera III Videocolonoscope (CF HQ190 L, Olympus UK). Terminal ileum intubation was attempted in all the patients who had cecal intubation. A pro forma was used to record information such as biodata of the patients, indications for the procedure, and the findings, including that of the intubated terminal ileum. Results: The colonoscopy results of 305 patients comprising 168 (55.1%) males and 137 (44.9%) females were analyzed. Cecum was reached in 272 (89.2%) patients and successful terminal ileum intubation was achieved in 84/272 (30.9%) patients. Macroscopically, 82 (97.6%) patients had normal ileum, while abnormal findings were recorded in two patients, giving a diagnostic yield of 2.4% (2/84). The various abnormalities were ulcers, polypoid lesions, and cobblestone appearance. Of the 16 (19%) patients who had a biopsy of the terminal ileum, microscopic abnormalities were seen in 15 (93.7%) patients while 1 (6.3%) patient had normal ileal histology. Conclusion: The diagnostic yield of ileoscopy in this study was very low, and hence, it may not be routinely necessary in all patients in our practice.","PeriodicalId":307187,"journal":{"name":"Tropical Journal of Medical Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124387778","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Patients and Methods: A case-control study was done on apparently healthy children aged 9-12 months attending the neonatology high-risk clinic of a tertiary hospital in Delhi, India. All study subjects had an institutional delivery, needed neonatal intensive care after birth, and had received vaccination as per defined schedule comprising at least 3 doses of hepatitis B vaccine. Case group included children whose birth weight was <1800 g whereas the controls constituted infants with birth weight ≥1800 g. Anti-hepatitis B (anti-HB) antibody estimation was done on the sera from all children by ELISA technique. Results: Out of 25 cases (15 males), 13 were born with very low birth weight (birth weight <1500 g). The gestational age was ≤32 weeks in 16 cases and the rest (n = 9) had a gestational age between 32 and 36 weeks of age. All controls (n = 25, 16 males) were delivered at term gestation. The mean birth weight of control group was 2800 g (±350) against 1500 g (±312) in the case group. A total of 9 children (5 cases and 4 controls) lacked protective titers (>10 IU/mL) of anti-HB antibodies. Conclusions: There was no effect of birth weight on the development of protective anti-HB antibody titers (>10 IU/mL) in infancy.","PeriodicalId":307187,"journal":{"name":"Tropical Journal of Medical Research","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126668414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Besides the oral cavity, other locations may be affected, for example, nasal cavity, paranasal sinus, pharynx, esophagus, larynx, tracheobronchial tree, eye, and external auditory canal. The primary central salivary gland neoplasms of the mandible are infrequent. Their clinical and radiographic features may be similar to odontogenic tumors, which are otherwise common. Their accurate diagnosis becomes troublesome. Hence, diagnosis should depend on stringent diagnostic criteria. The WHO has estimated that 4 million people can be infected by ZIKV by the end of 2016 if proper preventive measures are not taken. Our search results had yielded a total of 373 articles, of which 40 articles were included for perusal. In this review, we highlight the pathogenesis of ZIKV, different modes of transmission of ZIKV, and issues related to the diagnosis of ZIKV. Serological tests have shown strong cross-reactivity of immunoglobulin M against other flaviviruses. We have also highlighted possible preventive steps that can be deployed to prevent the epidemic from getting out of hands. The article also highlights the implication of the forthcoming Summer Olympic Games in Brazil on the spread of ZIKV.
