In 918, the synod of Bulgarian bishops elevated the Bulgarian archbishopric to the patriarchate. In 927 Constantinople recognized the patriarchate. In 1020 the Bulgarian Patriarchate was abolished. The Church regained autocephaly in 1187. After the conquest of the Bulgarian lands by the Ottomans, the Church ceased autocephaly again. The struggle for the autocephaly of the Bulgarian Church became a very important postulate of the Bulgarian national movement in the 19th century. In 1872 the Bulgarian exarchate unilaterally favored autocephaly. Only in February 22, 1945, the Patriarch of Constantinople confirmed the autocephaly of the Bulgarian Church. In 1953 the Bulgarian Patriarch was elected.","PeriodicalId":30709,"journal":{"name":"Elpis","volume":"276 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135649687","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some, related to interior design, are utilitarian, while others have a sacral feature, constituting objects of worship. Icons play a significant role in the equipment of Orthodox churches. Their location in the church is associated with elaborate schemes and rules. Those in the iconostasis separate the nave from the presbyterium. Each of them, depicting biblical scenes or figures of God and saints, has its specific place. There also are icons in the central nave, on frescoes, and on polychromes. This article focuses on showing icons outside the iconostasis. They designate new places of worship in the central nave of the Orthodox churches. These are locally revered icons associated with a specific temple or town. Among them, the most common are images of the Virgin Mary. On the example of the extensive parish network of the Polish Autocephalous Orthodox Church in Bialystok in Podlaskie Voivodeship, the author attempts to show the diversity of iconographic images as well as will try to find elements connecting various types of icons of the Virgin Mary present in Orthodox churches in Bialystok. The author decided to concentrate on those iconographic representations that apart from architectural and artistic value carry a sacral charge, i.g. subjects of a unique cult in local communities. The aim of this article is to present the icons of the Mother of God from Orthodox churches in Bialystok which are locally venerated and to try to systematize the elements of this cult manifested in services, individual worship and inspirations and references.","PeriodicalId":30709,"journal":{"name":"Elpis","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135650028","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Initially, he laid the foundations for a diplomatic mission in Moscow, which eventually led to negotiations with the Moscow Patriarchate. The Ministry of Religious Affairs and Public Enlightenment sought to initially regulate the matter of the Orthodox Church within its competence, namely in the area of the Congress Kingdom, conducting talks with representatives of the Civil Administration of Eastern Territories in Vilnius and the Civil Administration of Volhynia and Podolia. Preliminary talks between the government and church hierarchs on autocephaly in the period from independence to the end of the Polish-Soviet war with the Treaty of Riga of March 18, 1921 were an important step in regulating the canonical and legal position of the Orthodox Church in Poland.","PeriodicalId":30709,"journal":{"name":"Elpis","volume":"54 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135649128","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
