However inherent anatomical variabilities between individuals and possible pathologies make registration difficult. This paper presents a bootstrap strategy for characterizing non-pathological variations in human brain anatomy, as well its application to achieve accurate 3-D deformable registration. Inherent anatomical variations are initially extracted by deformably registering training data with an expert-segmented 3-D image, a digital brain atlas. Statistical properties of the density and geometric variations in brain anatomy are extracted and encoded into the atlas to build a statistical atlas. These statistics are then used as prior knowledge to guide the deformation process. A bootstrap loop is formed by registering the statistical atlas to larger training sets as more data becomes available, so as to ensure more robust knowledge extraction, and to achieve more precise registration. Compared to an algorithm with no knowledge guidance, registration using the statistical atlas reduces the overall error by 34%.","PeriodicalId":306720,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134007608","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Many such techniques can be used, two of which are the Majority Voting and the Divide and Conquer techniques. The former achieves decision combination by measuring consensus among the participating classifiers and the latter achieves the same by dividing the problem into smaller problems and solving each of these sub-problems more efficiently. Both these approaches have their advantages and disadvantages. In this paper, a novel approach to combining these two techniques is presented. Although the success of the approach has been demonstrated in a typical application area of computer vision (recognition of complex and highly variable image data), the approach is completely generalised and is applicable to other task domains.","PeriodicalId":306720,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision","volume":"2017 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133453683","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

First, the 3D nonrigid motion and structure of the facial features is recovered from a 2D image sequence and a \"person-specific\" model of the face. The model consists of the intensity and range image of the face. Then, the FAPs are computed from the recovered 3D structure. The customizable MPEG4 face animation is generated using a FAP sequence and a model of a specific person. The dataset of four face image sequences from three different face orientations equipped with range images are used. The GT (ground truth) results are generated using the 3D structure provided by range images. The results are evaluated quantitatively by comparing recovered FAP values, and qualitatively by comparing the generated MPEG-4 animations. FAPs are recovered up to 8% (relative) and 16 FAP units (absolute) accuracy and the animation is nearly identical to the MPEG-4 animation using GT FAPs.","PeriodicalId":306720,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117184804","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first module employs local grouping and uses multiple scales and contest to reliably extract most parts of the road network. To connect these parts, the second module exploits the network characteristics of roads for global grouping. The third module completes the network based on an analysis of path lengths within and between connected components of the network. An evaluation of the results shows that the system benefits from the integration of different types of knowledge within the road extraction scheme.","PeriodicalId":306720,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision","volume":"133 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115221842","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this work we propose the thin-plate spline as a more accurate model for the geometric transformations that arise in fingerprint images. In addition we show how such a model can be integrated into a matching algorithm by means of a two-step iterative minimization with auxiliary variables. Such a method allows to correct many of the false pairings of minutiae commonly found by matching algorithms based on linear transforms.","PeriodicalId":306720,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114383370","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A novel method to extract clear textual images from interfering and overlapping areas of text is presented here. The proposed algorithm is interesting in that, with an observation that the edges of the seeping strokes from the reverse side are not as sharp as those on the front side, it adopts an edge detection approach to suppress unwanted background patterns. By further concentrating on the orientation of the strokes, other remaining long and strong noisy edges are removed by using an orientation filter and a size filter. The proposed method proves to perform well regardless of the intensity differences between the foreground writing and the interfering strokes. The segmentation results of real images are shown and evaluated.","PeriodicalId":306720,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129035081","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to cost and communication constraints, this information is usually of rather low quality. The cooccurrence of a large number of sensors and the low quality of every single sensor has the potential to create a new episteme in computer vision. This paper presents an example of how certain limitations of a single sensor can be overcome by using the sensor multiplicity. Using a number of web cameras available in the Seattle area, the paper performs first a simple qualitative traffic analysis from each single camera. Since the cameras provide images at a very low rate (1 image every 2 minutes), standard techniques based on motion detection are unusable, and the paper proposes a simple approach based on image variance. Then, the data are integrated using the structure of the Seattle highway system and network tomography to determine the major flows of traffic at different times of the day.","PeriodicalId":306720,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115196388","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We propose a novel, efficient, accurate and distortion-tolerant fingerprint authentication technique based on graph representation. Using the fingerprint minutiae features, a labeled, and weighted graph of minutiae is constructed for both the query fingerprint and the reference fingerprint. In the first phase, we obtain a minimum set of matched node pairs by matching their neighborhood structures. In the second phase, we include more pairs in the match by comparing distances with respect to matched pairs obtained in first phase. An optional third phase, extending the neighborhood around each feature, is entered if we cannot arrive at a decision based on the analysis in first two phases. The proposed algorithm has been tested with excellent results on a large private livescan database obtained with optical scanners.","PeriodicalId":306720,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision","volume":"695 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114605460","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The detection procedure consists of two steps. First, a simple 1D-extrema detector provides line scratch candidates. Line artifacts persist across several frames. Therefore, to reject false detections, the detected scratches are tracked over the sequence using a Kalman filter. A new Bayesian restoration technique, dealing with both low and high frequencies around and inside the detected artifacts, is investigated to achieve a near invisible restoration of damaged areas.","PeriodicalId":306720,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision","volume":"17 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2000-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124187930","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although solutions for small objects in well defined environments are already available, the insufficient scalability of these approaches to large scenes and to a high number of degrees of freedom limits their applicability. In this paper we present a new planning algorithm with emphasis on practical usability in initially unknown, large indoor environments. Using a surface representation of seen and unseen parts of the environment, we propose an objective function based on the analysis of occlusions. In addition to previous approaches, we take into account both a quality criterion and the cost of the next acquisition. By optimising this objective function, the parameters of the next view are computed efficiently for a large search space with eight degrees of freedom (3D position, viewing direction, field of view, and resolution). Our technique exploits hardware-accelerated rendering (OpenGL) in order to perform the expensive visibility computation, which reduces the computation time of one planning step to a couple of minutes. Results are shown for two large indoor scenes-an artificial scene and a real world room-with numerous self occlusions.","PeriodicalId":306720,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings Fifth IEEE Workshop on Applications of Computer Vision","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123876839","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
