Liposomes are designed like a sandwich wherein the hydrophilic layer which contains the drug to be delivered at the target site is encapsulated between two hydrophobic layers. This enables efficient delivery of hydrophilic drugs through the body membranes which are lipophilic bio-membranes. The size of liposomes can be engineered according to the pore size of the target membranes. The development of the liposome technology has enabled to increase the therapeutic indices of agents mainly through alteration of biodistribution and bioavailability. The development of second generation liposomes from the existing liposomes is based on the conventional liposome systems. The second generation liposomes are long-circulating liposomes formed by modifying composition and length of the lipid chain and charge of the vesicle. Liposomes are gaining importance in targeted drug delivery, especially in cancer. The chemotherapy and radiotherapy used for treating cancer have multiple implications on the entire body. This is due to non-targeted treatment. The use of liposomes will help in identifying the cancerous cells selectively and thus can potentially reduce the extreme side effects of the medication. This selective nature is termed as ‘ligand targeted therapeutics’. These ligands would be used to modify the liposomal surface to identify specific antigens of malignant cells. The advantages of liposomes in targeted delivery, along with the different categories of liposomes depending on size and lipid layers are discussed in this review.","PeriodicalId":306123,"journal":{"name":"The Bombay Technologist","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134539305","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Some 72 toxic chemicals have been identified in water solely from textile dyeing, 30 of which cannot be removed. Increasing demand for sustainable dyeing processes is evident due to such environmental concerns, opening the door for exploitation of various new techniques of coloration with the help of modern scientific inputs so that modified naturally available dyes and colourants can offer themselves as effective ecologically benefiting alternative in various traditional and advanced application disciplines. In this review, we discuss various such advancements taken to adopt a greener step in the ladder of textile coloration and dyeing along with some newly discovered applications of natural dyes.","PeriodicalId":306123,"journal":{"name":"The Bombay Technologist","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125083239","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Desulphurisation techniques such as hydrodesulphurisation are used to remove these compounds, in which expensive and highly inflammable hydrogen is used. However, this technique is not that efficient for organic non-reacting sulphur compounds like thiophene, dibenzothiophene, alkyl substituted dibenzothiophene, etc. In this study, aqueous solution of an ionic liquid, namely, [BMIM][Cl] has been used to extract thiophene from a model fuel (iso-octane). Various parameters that affect the extractability have been studied. These parameters include contact time, varying thiophene concentration, varying [BMIM][Cl] concentration and temperature. Maximum possible extraction achieved was >99% for a 1000 ppm of thiophene in iso-octane in 1 hr at 40 O C, when aqueous [BMIM][Cl] ionic liquid concentration was 1.5 M.","PeriodicalId":306123,"journal":{"name":"The Bombay Technologist","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126716668","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Fluorescently labeled amino acids can show variety of properties, like environment sensitivity, chelation-enhanced fluorescence etc., which has provoked researchers to observe biological processes such as protein conformational changes, protein localization, enzyme activities and binding events. This review describes the design and applications of fluorescent unnatural amino acids. The capacity to incorporate fluorescent amino acids site-selectively into a protein or peptide gives the benefit of closely retaining the built-in function and structure of that protein.","PeriodicalId":306123,"journal":{"name":"The Bombay Technologist","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129962464","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Use of nanoparticles as the contrast agents can help in better diagnosis of the damaged cells. Iron nanoparticles are used in various advanced techniques like superparamagnetic iron oxide nanoparticles (SPIONs) and ultra-small SPIONs (USPIONs). The major challenge in treatment of MS is the delivery of the drug into the brain, crossing the blood brain barrier (BBB). Nanoparticles like liposomes, nanoshells, dendrimers, nanogels, micelles have potential applications in the same. Presently, no significant treatment is devoid of side effects like fever, headache and fatigue, Use of nanoscience in MS in drug delivery and treatment can help solve the prevailing inadequacies. Administered quantum dots conjugated with self-antigens act on lymph nodes and spleen. These assemblies produce regulatory T-cells which prevent degeneration of myelin sheath. New studies study modifications to produce inflammation-resistant myelin by inducing response in lymph nodes during T-cell priming. This review aims to briefly describe the application of nanotechnology in diagnosis, drug delivery and treatment of MS.","PeriodicalId":306123,"journal":{"name":"The Bombay Technologist","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127489015","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
