In literature; this is achieved either by connecting the resistors in various combinations or by manual tuning of potentiometers; which is quite tedious. Moreover; resistance value is compromised with another close available value most of the time. In the present work; an attempt is done to design a digital resistance box that provides the desired value of resistance by simply entering the value through a digital keypad. In the presented approach; a microcontroller is used to control the servo motor; on which the potentiometer is mounted. The resistance of the potentiometer get varied by servo motor; which is controlled by a microcontroller. The microcontroller is programmed to control the servo motor using binary search computational algorithm. A controller using Second Order Sliding Mode (SOSM) with proportional integral (PI) sliding surface is proposed. In this controller control gains are chosen in such a way that the characteristics polynomial whose coefficients are control gains is strictly Hurwitz and asymptotic stability of the closed loop system is ensured. From simulation results it is observed that the tracking performance is improved using the SOSM. In recent years, efforts are made to upgrade power quality. Multi pulse converters are used to achieve good quality of electrical power. Phase shift transformer is used to obtain 12 and 24 pulses as outputs. The quality of power mainly depends on some parameters like, variation in voltage magnitude, transients in voltage/current, harmonic content in waveforms etc. So in this paper, improvement in power quality is shown by comparing the THD (total harmonic distortion) of 6, 12 & 24 pulses. The growing demand is expeditiously leading to the depletion of resources and increasing tariff. The improvised structure of the conventional grid namely, smart grid is rapidly gaining attention with its scheme for efficient meeting of the growing demand and the integration of renewables. The implementation of smart grid requires extensive communication methodology and structured control strategy. In this paper, the controls over the smart grid have been segregated into three as primary, secondary and tertiary. This paper deals with the intelligence associated with the primary and secondary levels placed in regard with the consumer and micro-grid operation. A price prediction scheme as a part of Home Energy Management System (HEMS) has also been designed to increase the consumer awareness. The role of the consumer as well as micro-grid in intelligent demand management has been demonstrated in this paper through simulations in MatLab using fuzzy logic. In this new PSO, a better population of particles is selected by applying reduction factor (r) after suitable number of iterations called sorting frequency (fs). This better population is based on the objective function value and is chosen after suitable sorting frequency. As all the renewable energy resources except geothermal energy, being climate dependent, the power generated from them is of varying magnitude-even sometimes no power is generated at all. The other drawbacks are the poor power quality and the high cost of generation, which are the big challenges for meeting the target of ever increasing demand of electric power by renewable energy systems in an efficient and effective way. The various schemes described in the literature for improving the power quality as well as the overall performance of the system by using developed technologies involving power electronics, are reviewed in the paper. In order to achieve the continuous power of constant magnitude up to the satisfactory level, the hybrid schemes using two or more renewable energy sources or any conventional system with some energy storage methods for backup are also discussed. The wind energy conversion system consists of a wind turbine coupled to DFIG (Double Fed Induction Generator) equipped with MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking). The MPPT demands speed control which is realized using vector control of the rotor side converter. The voltage and frequency control is achieved through load side converter connected to the common DC bus. Solar PV power is fed to the same DC bus using DC-DC boost converter which is also equipped with MPPT algorithm to extract maximum energy from the incident solar energy. The system is modeled in Sim-Power System tool of MATLAB and its performance under all the practical conditions e.g. varying wind speed and radiation; unbalanced and nonlinear load is presented. Under all these conditions; the stator currents flowing through DFIG are balanced and sinusoidal. The harmonics in load voltage under all conditions are within requirement of IEEE 519 standard. The scheme doesn't envisage measurement of any mechanical quantities e.g. wind speed or rotor position. The study is focussed upon the control techniques when there is a sudden brake on high angular velocity rotation of reaction wheels, which are seated on the surface of Cubli, allowing the Cubli to leap up, first to its edge, and then to its corner without any extrinsic control. The main objective of performing the ELD is to minimize the generator fuel cost. The minimum cost function found using optimization techniques is a widely researched area. One such optimization technique is the Bat algorithm. In this communication, Novel Bat Algorithm has been introduced to solve the ELD problem. The Novel Bat Algorithm introduces the idea of using Doppler Effect and movement of bats between different habitats. It is compared with the Bat algorithm and the Particle Swarm Optimization to find the most efficient among them.
