Thus, understanding the factors which influence academic performance is timely. This study aims to examine the determinants that impact the academic performance of students. The determinants include student engagement, general knowledge, social skills, and communication skills. This study applied a quantitative research design, with an online survey questionnaire distributed to the students of a private university in Klang Valley, and 150 valid responses were solicited. The Pearson’s product-moment correlations in the current study demonstrated that student engagement had a positive and strong relationship with student’s academic achievement. General knowledge and social skills were found to have a positive and moderate relationship with academic achievement; however, communication skills were found to have a positive but weak correlation with academic achievement. Multiple regression analysis found that student engagement, general knowledge, and social skills were predictors of academic achievement. However, communication skills were not the predictor. In addition, this study significantly contributes to students’ social life aspects as it is consistent with the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education's initiative to integrate soft skills into the curriculum and learning processes. This will urge the university's management to develop initiatives and programmes that equip students with various soft skills to make them competent in the market force after graduation. This study also discusses the conclusion, implications, and future research directions.","PeriodicalId":305913,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication, Language and Culture","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115385127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Faktor yang menyebabkan masalah ini termasuk kekurangan bahan bantu mengajar, kurikulum yang kurang mencukupi, dan kurangnya latihan dalam kelas. Pelajar juga kurang berminat untuk mempelajari Jawi kerana menganggap bahawa Jawi tidak penting dalam zaman moden. Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, para pendidik dilihat perlu meningkatkan kualiti bahan bantu mengajar dan menambahkan lebih banyak aktiviti menarik dalam kurikulum. Penggunaan teknologi moden seperti aplikasi pembelajaran bahasa juga boleh digunakan untuk menggalakkan minat pelajar dalam mempelajari Jawi. Kajian ini bertujuan unutk mengenal pasti elemen yang sesuai dalam membina aplikasi Jawi dan menjelaskan proses pembinaan aplikasi i-Jawi untuk digunakan dalam pembelajaran Jawi khususnya di peringkat prasekolah. Fuzzy Delphi Method (FDM) digunakan untuk mendapatkan kesepakatan daripada 13 orang pakar mengenai elemen-elemen yang perlu ada dalam aplikasi tersebut. Kajian ini menggunakan skala likert 7 yang terbahagi kepada dua bahagian utama iaitu Bahagian I: maklumat demografi pakar dan Bahagian II:\u0000elemen-elemen yang terdapat dalam i-JAWI APP iaitu elemen isi kandungan, teks, grafik, audio dan kemudahan. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis menggunakan Pernomboran Segi Tiga Fuzzy, sementara ranking pula ditetapkan melalui proses Defuzzication. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa fasa reka bentuk ini telah memenuhi syarat-syarat FDM dengan nilai treshold (d) kurang daripada 0.2, peratus kesepakatan pakar melebihi 75% dan nilai skor fuzzy (A) melebihi 0.5. Secara keseluruhannya, dapat disimpulkan bahawa pembinaan aplikasi i-JAWI APP berdasarkan elemen-elemen yang telah\u0000dipersetujui pakar ini amat signifikan dalam membantu pembelajaran Jawi khususnya di peringkat prasekolah. Sebagai cadangan, pengkaji-pengkaji pada masa akan datang disarankan untuk mengkaji elemen-elemen lain dan melibatkan pakar-pakar dari pelbagai latar belakang dengan menggunakan metod Fuzzy Delphi ini","PeriodicalId":305913,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication, Language and Culture","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131161309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It argues that, with its overall focus on academic language and disciplinary acculturation, EAP pedagogic practices can overlook the dimension of social acculturation, which is also an equally important skill for students’ learning. For its theoretical framework, this paper presents a review of the literature that considers the significance of social acculturation and intercultural competence in the EAP curriculum. Drawing on this body of literature review as a methodology, this study proposes pedagogic practices such as Intercultural Approach and Sheltered Instruction that can be implemented in EAP seminar classes to develop international students' social acculturation. The seminar genre is suggested for students to practice the social acculturation process and hence improve their intercultural competence. This is because seminars provide an effective setting to prepare students for their new environment, allow them to interact with each other and practice their intercultural - as well as linguistic and disciplinary - skills.","PeriodicalId":305913,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication, Language and Culture","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114233281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A folktale is a representation of oral traditions and expressions. This study converges on literary folktales as a revitalized form of oral folktales. As urged by UNESCO, the viability of the ICH is achievable via scientific research, among other things. Therefore, considering the small amount of study on Malay folktales at the moment, the current study endeavors to examine the folktale The Song of the Kedidi (TSoK) of its hero embodiment as one of the dramatis personae. The framework of Propp’s dramatis personae, which is based on Russian folktales, grounds the examination. This study examines whether the heroes from the Russian folktales embody TSoK. The thematic qualitative text analysis (TQTA) was employed to examine TSoK. It was conducted in Atlas.ti environment to assure rigor and trustworthiness. The study’s findings suggest that TSoK embodies heroes from Russian folktales. However, a conundrum exists in the embodiment of the hero. There is a conflict between the dramatis personae’s role, and such an enigma calls for the involvement of other dramatis personae, which is reserved for future works. As a crusade to safeguard the Malay folktales as the unsung ICH, the findings create a platform for scholars of similar interests to pursue the examination of heroes in other Malay folktales. Most importantly, the findings are necessary for endless recreation and transmission of knowledge to safeguard the Malay folktale as a living heritage. This act echoes one of UNESCO’s formal education measures to foster society’s respect, recognition, and awareness of the ICH.","PeriodicalId":305913,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication, Language and Culture","volume":"29 1-2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116715786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It examines whether or not and to what extent securitised images of Islam and Muslims have been produced on Twitter. In addition, the study analyses the dominant securitised themes and their sub-dimensions. The methodology used for this purpose consisted of an empirical and sentiment analysis, analysing three hashtags trending on Twitter. It was found that the portrayal of Muslims and Islam on the Twitter platform was problematic and produced securitised images of Islam and Muslims. Totalitarianism and Sharia law as sub-dimensions of the ideological threat in the context of the securitisation of Islam were dominating, while general Muslims and women as sub-dimensions of securitisation of Muslims were dominating on Twitter. Similarly, hashtags #banislam and #stopislam produced more securitised images than #racism. A few positive and neutral Tweets were found producing positive images of Islam and Muslims on Twitter, showing that these hashtags produced securitised images of Islam and Muslims. Finally, in the securitisation of Islam and Muslims, these hashtags produced more tweets on Islam as an ideological threat category rather than Muslims as an existential threat category.","PeriodicalId":305913,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication, Language and Culture","volume":"87 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124985885","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A quantitative approach was used, and 100 respondents participated in this study. The selection of respondents was made randomly based on several criteria. Data were collected online based on close-ended and open-ended questions related to home learning and parents' struggles. The study identified three major themes, which are personal, technical and financial challenges. All the variables based on these challenges are interrelated, have significant correlations, and mutually influence each other. The results show that the mean for variable personal challenges is at a moderate level (m=3.22), the mean for technical challenges is at a high level (m=3.77), and the mean for financial challenges is at a moderate level (m=3.55). This proves that there is a significant relationship between personal, technical and financial challenges. This study shed light on parents' struggle to provide educational support for online learning during the COVID-19 outbreak in Malaysia. To overcome it, some revisions and modifications are required, including finding ways to provide assistance from schools, teachers and the government. The implementation of new laws, regulations and suggestions may assist the parents in enhancing the perceptions that parents have in handling situations in challenging times. Other than that, there is a need to study further.","PeriodicalId":305913,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication, Language and Culture","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125275102","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Subconscious bias is caused by factors such as the socioeconomic environment in which a person was raised, information gleaned from a network of friends, acquaintances, co-workers, as well as information from all other information sources. Confirmation bias is the propensity to look for evidence that supports one's preconceived notions rather than contradicts them. Due to its pressure on influencing personal opinions, confirmation bias has recently come back into focus as a topic of discussion, and social media today seems to have the biggest impact on the creation of confirmation bias in personal opinions on a variety of issues. Owing to social media's immense fame and popularity today, it has turned into a source of confirmation bias. Therefore, what are the factors that contribute to confirmation bias in our opinions on social media? How does confirmation bias shape our opinions on social media? A semi-structured interview was conducted with six (6) informants to seek answers to what and how confirmation bias shapes our opinions on social media. This study produced four themes, which are education level, algorithm, conformity, and self-control. Briefly, social media does shape confirmation bias in internet users' personal opinions. Finally, the current study has a limitation in that it only looks at social media, personal opinions, and confirmation bias.","PeriodicalId":305913,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication, Language and Culture","volume":"261 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115594775","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Swales's (1981) move analysis was applied to identify and analyse the moves, while Trosborg's (1995) taxonomy of strategies was employed to analyse the speech act of complaints. The study's objectives are to investigate the communicative moves used by Japanese and Malaysian when expressing their regret through TripAdvisor and to analyse the complaint strategies used by Japanese and Malaysians when performing complaints online. The descriptive qualitative research method was employed, and data comprised 40 negative reviews towards hotels in Langkawi. The study used online reviews from TripAdvisor's website, to examine the negative feedback from Japanese and Malaysian guests in the English language were posted. The findings showed that the complaints' communicative moves had six moves: Opening, Dissatisfaction, Explanation, Recommendation, Closing, and Compliment, which were adapted from Morrow and Yamanouchi (2020). Moreover, findings of the move frequencies revealed that both the Japanese and Malaysian hotel guests would elaborate their frustration in detail as the 'Explanation' move. However, Malaysian travellers indicated more reasons and sequences of frustration than Japanese travellers. Furthermore, the sequence of the moves is not in a proper structure of conveying a complaint on TripAdvisor, whereby the 'Compliment' move was found either in the beginning, in the middle or in the ending parts of the text. Taxonomy of the complaint strategies by Trosborg (1995) was verified as follows: 1) 27.5% of No Explicit Reproach, 2) 35% of Disapproval Expression, 3) 22.5% of Accusation, and 4) 15% of Blame. In summary, the findings revealed that the two groups have comparable approach selections but differ in terms of complaint moves, complaint strategies, and language phrases for expressing frustration. Thus, knowing cross-cultural similarities and differences in speech acts can help avoid possible intercultural miscommunication, and managing negative customer reviews is pertinent for the hotel industry to improve intercultural communication.","PeriodicalId":305913,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication, Language and Culture","volume":"67 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126209699","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Hence, understanding university students’ motive for binge-watching is timely, especially during the Covid-19 lockdown period, when there is a lack of studies on this phenomenon. Thus, this study aims to examine the motives that influence Netflix binge-watching behaviour among university students. The study utilised the Uses and Gratifications (U&G) Theory, and three motives, namely ‘entertainment’, ‘social interaction’ and ‘escape’ were deduced from the theory. The study adopted a quantitative research approach using an online survey method. A total of 150 valid responses were collected through the purposive sampling technique, and the results were analysed using correlation and regression analysis. The findings through the Pearson’s correlations indicated that ‘entertainment’ has a positive and strong relationship with Netflix binge-watching behaviour, while ‘social interaction’ and ‘escape’ motives have a positive but moderately significant relationship with the binge-watching behaviour. Regression analysis further showed that only ‘entertainment’ and ‘social interaction’ were the predictors of binge-watching behaviour; however, ‘escape’ was not a predictor. This study also contributes to the U&G Theory as well as the literature on the youth’s media consumption, particularly during the Covid-19 lockdown period, for it benefits the parents, video streaming service providers and government in understanding the motives that influence binge-watching among youths; thus, strategies can be implemented to avoid excessive binge-watching behaviour during the lockdown which leads to negative social media outcomes.","PeriodicalId":305913,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication, Language and Culture","volume":"48 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-07-27","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129483931","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
