Thus, understanding the factors which influence academic performance is timely. This study aims to examine the determinants that impact the academic performance of students. The determinants include student engagement, general knowledge, social skills, and communication skills. This study applied a quantitative research design, with an online survey questionnaire distributed to the students of a private university in Klang Valley, and 150 valid responses were solicited. The Pearson’s product-moment correlations in the current study demonstrated that student engagement had a positive and strong relationship with student’s academic achievement. General knowledge and social skills were found to have a positive and moderate relationship with academic achievement; however, communication skills were found to have a positive but weak correlation with academic achievement. Multiple regression analysis found that student engagement, general knowledge, and social skills were predictors of academic achievement. However, communication skills were not the predictor. In addition, this study significantly contributes to students’ social life aspects as it is consistent with the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education's initiative to integrate soft skills into the curriculum and learning processes. This will urge the university's management to develop initiatives and programmes that equip students with various soft skills to make them competent in the market force after graduation. This study also discusses the conclusion, implications, and future research directions.","PeriodicalId":305913,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication, Language and Culture","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115385127","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Faktor yang menyebabkan masalah ini termasuk kekurangan bahan bantu mengajar, kurikulum yang kurang mencukupi, dan kurangnya latihan dalam kelas. Pelajar juga kurang berminat untuk mempelajari Jawi kerana menganggap bahawa Jawi tidak penting dalam zaman moden. Untuk mengatasi masalah ini, para pendidik dilihat perlu meningkatkan kualiti bahan bantu mengajar dan menambahkan lebih banyak aktiviti menarik dalam kurikulum. Penggunaan teknologi moden seperti aplikasi pembelajaran bahasa juga boleh digunakan untuk menggalakkan minat pelajar dalam mempelajari Jawi. Kajian ini bertujuan unutk mengenal pasti elemen yang sesuai dalam membina aplikasi Jawi dan menjelaskan proses pembinaan aplikasi i-Jawi untuk digunakan dalam pembelajaran Jawi khususnya di peringkat prasekolah. Fuzzy Delphi Method (FDM) digunakan untuk mendapatkan kesepakatan daripada 13 orang pakar mengenai elemen-elemen yang perlu ada dalam aplikasi tersebut. Kajian ini menggunakan skala likert 7 yang terbahagi kepada dua bahagian utama iaitu Bahagian I: maklumat demografi pakar dan Bahagian II:\u0000elemen-elemen yang terdapat dalam i-JAWI APP iaitu elemen isi kandungan, teks, grafik, audio dan kemudahan. Data yang diperoleh dianalisis menggunakan Pernomboran Segi Tiga Fuzzy, sementara ranking pula ditetapkan melalui proses Defuzzication. Hasil kajian menunjukkan bahawa fasa reka bentuk ini telah memenuhi syarat-syarat FDM dengan nilai treshold (d) kurang daripada 0.2, peratus kesepakatan pakar melebihi 75% dan nilai skor fuzzy (A) melebihi 0.5. Secara keseluruhannya, dapat disimpulkan bahawa pembinaan aplikasi i-JAWI APP berdasarkan elemen-elemen yang telah\u0000dipersetujui pakar ini amat signifikan dalam membantu pembelajaran Jawi khususnya di peringkat prasekolah. Sebagai cadangan, pengkaji-pengkaji pada masa akan datang disarankan untuk mengkaji elemen-elemen lain dan melibatkan pakar-pakar dari pelbagai latar belakang dengan menggunakan metod Fuzzy Delphi ini","PeriodicalId":305913,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication, Language and Culture","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131161309","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It argues that, with its overall focus on academic language and disciplinary acculturation, EAP pedagogic practices can overlook the dimension of social acculturation, which is also an equally important skill for students’ learning. For its theoretical framework, this paper presents a review of the literature that considers the significance of social acculturation and intercultural competence in the EAP curriculum. Drawing on this body of literature review as a methodology, this study proposes pedagogic practices such as Intercultural Approach and Sheltered Instruction that can be implemented in EAP seminar classes to develop international students' social acculturation. The seminar genre is suggested for students to practice the social acculturation process and hence improve their intercultural competence. This is because seminars provide an effective setting to prepare students for their new environment, allow them to interact with each other and practice their intercultural - as well as linguistic and disciplinary - skills.","PeriodicalId":305913,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication, Language and Culture","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-07-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114233281","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A folktale is a representation of oral traditions and expressions. This study converges on literary folktales as a revitalized form of oral folktales. As urged by UNESCO, the viability of the ICH is achievable via scientific research, among other things. Therefore, considering the small amount of study on Malay folktales at the moment, the current study endeavors to examine the folktale The Song of the Kedidi (TSoK) of its hero embodiment as one of the dramatis personae. The framework of Propp’s dramatis personae, which is based on Russian folktales, grounds the examination. This study examines whether the heroes from the Russian folktales embody TSoK. The thematic qualitative text analysis (TQTA) was employed to examine TSoK. It was conducted in Atlas.ti environment to assure rigor and trustworthiness. The study’s findings suggest that TSoK embodies heroes from Russian folktales. However, a conundrum exists in the embodiment of the hero. There is a conflict between the dramatis personae’s role, and such an enigma calls for the involvement of other dramatis personae, which is reserved for future works. As a crusade to safeguard the Malay folktales as the unsung ICH, the findings create a platform for scholars of similar interests to pursue the examination of heroes in other Malay folktales. Most importantly, the findings are necessary for endless recreation and transmission of knowledge to safeguard the Malay folktale as a living heritage. This act echoes one of UNESCO’s formal education measures to foster society’s respect, recognition, and awareness of the ICH.","PeriodicalId":305913,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Communication, Language and Culture","volume":"29 1-2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-01-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116715786","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
