In-depth interviews were carried out with women heads, or former heads, of department, in order to obtain their perspectives on their day to day management experiences, longer term strategies and goals, relationships with colleagues and leadership styles. The women all perceived their greatest strength as people management and collegiality, and gender was embedded in their work in a complex way. Some comparison between womens leadership experiences in the two universities is also drawn. Recommendations for universities to enhance the opportunities for, and status of, women managers and leaders are suggested in conclusion.","PeriodicalId":305287,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Learning: Annual Review","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124845761","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Pedagogic connectedness is defined as the engagements between teacher and student that impact on student learning. In this study, twenty teachers in an independent college in South-East Queensland, Australia, were interviewed and the interview transcripts analysed iteratively. Five qualitatively different ways of experiencing pedagogic connectedness emerged from the data. The findings of this phenomenographic-related study are instructive in developing a framework for changes to teachers’ pedagogic practices.","PeriodicalId":305287,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Learning: Annual Review","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126866942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The emergence of this topic has to be considered against the background of different developments: Restructuring of labour markets and classes of business, changed economic requirements, internationalisation, europeanisation of educational policy etc. Thus, the discourse about employability is an expression of ongoing changes, which do not only affect the state and businesses, but also individuals. This article considers the question, which requirements result from the focussing of courses of studies on the employability of their graduates for universities. It will be inquired, how not only the state and businesses, but also individuals are affected by the employability strategy.","PeriodicalId":305287,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Learning: Annual Review","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-07-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114733173","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Like other organizations, SSNPOs need to learn new knowledge and unlearn outdated knowledge. After reviewing the literature, \u0000I argue that IC is a potent avenue which assists SSNPOs to facilitate learning and generate new knowledge. Thus I contribute to the literature by theoretically arguing that IC can be utilized as a conceptual framework which helps to develop a learning culture that transforms SSNPOs into dynamic learning organizations. I propose a holistic IC conceptual framework which helps nonprofit managers to visualize IC and its components in the organizations. Finally, I discuss the framework’s implications for effective learning and knowledge creation in SSNPOs.","PeriodicalId":305287,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Learning: Annual Review","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121189749","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there is less information about the current status of ICT use by principals, their perceived competence in it, and their leadership style. This paper will report on these issues from an analysis of data gathered from a survey of secondary school principals in Tehran, Iran. The findings indicated that principals spent a few times a week working on their computers. Also, computer competence and transformational leadership contributed significantly to the level of computer use by principals. It was suggested that considerable ongoing professional development opportunities need to be provided for principals to fulfill their role as technology leader.","PeriodicalId":305287,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Learning: Annual Review","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116605372","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also describes applications of Knowledge Maps to facilitate meaningful learning by focusing on specific OER examples. The study centres on the OpenLearn project, a large scale online environment that makes a selection of higher education learning resources freely available via the internet. OpenLearn, which is supportedby William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, was launched in October 2006 and in the two year period of its existence hasreleased over 8,100 learning hours of the OU's distance learning resources for free access and modification by learnersand educators under the Creative Commons license. OpenLearn also offers three knowledge media tools: Compendium(knowledge mapping software), MSG (instant messaging application with geolocation maps) and FM (web-based videoconferencing application). Compendium is a software tool for visual thinking, used to connect ideas, concepts, arguments, websites and documents. There are numerous examples of OERs that have been developed and delivered by institutions across the world, for example, MIT, Rice, Utah State, Core, Paris Tech, JOCW. They present a wide variety of learning materials in terms of styles as well as differing subject content. Many such offerings are based upon original lecture notes, hand-outs and other related papers used in face-to-face teaching. Openlearn OERs, however, are reconstructed from original self study distance learning materials developed at the Open University and from a vast academic catalogue of materials. \u0000Samples of these “units” comprise a variety of formats: text, images, audio and video. In this study, our findings illustratethe benefits of sharing some OER content through knowledge maps, the possibility of condensing high volumes of information,accessing resources in a more attractive way, visualising connections between diverse learning materials, connecting new ideas to familiar references, organising thinking and gaining new insights into subject specific content.","PeriodicalId":305287,"journal":{"name":"The International Journal of Learning: Annual Review","volume":"17 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-09-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129303889","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
