Intracellular magnesium is required as co-factor for many enzymes involved in lipid metabolism. Magnesium deficiency has been found to have a role in the disruption of lipid metabolism in patients of type 2 diabetes mellitus. \u0000MATERIALS AND METHODS:This hospital based observational cross-sectional study was done between July 2021 and June,2022. 160 cases of Type 2 DM attending the Department ofMedicine, Assam Medical College & Hospital, Dibrugarh were enrolled for the study, as per inclusion and exclusion criteria. \u0000RESULTS: Mean age was 52.59±7.13 years. Mean HbA1c was 10.02 ±1.83 %. Mean serum magnesium level was 1.54±0.42 mg/dl. Mean serum triglyceride was 267.27±89.13 mg/dl, mean total cholesterol was 271.65±65.18 mg/dl, mean LDLc was 143.31±15.07 mg/dl and mean HDLc was 39.86±10.55 mg/dl. There was a statistically significant negative correlation between serum magnesium and LDLc (r= -0.906), serum magnesium and Triglycerides, (r= -0.995) and serum magnesium and Cholesterol levels (r=-0.991) and a statistically significant positive correlation between serum magnesium and HDLc r=+0.596). \u0000CONCLUSION: Low serum magnesium levels in diabetics correlate with dyslipidemia in Type 2 DM patients. Further studies are required to clinically investigate the role of magnesium in helping prevent dyslipidemia and complications among Type 2 DM patients.

Hypertension accounts for 51% of stroke deaths. Anecdotal evidence suggests rising trend of stroke among non-diabetic hypertensive patients. Current study was undertaken considering this rising trend among non-diabetic hypertensive patients, its mortality and the economic burden faced by the patient and his families. Methodology: A hospital based, group matched case-control study was conducted over one year among non-diabetic hypertensive patients presenting with and without stroke respectively (150: 150). Data was collected and entered using Epicollect 5 application and analysed using SPSS version 22. Conclusions: On univariate analysis, noncompliance to antihypertensive medications, regular use of added salt, smoking, alcohol, obesity, long duration of hypertension, raised systolic and diastolic BP and high total cholesterol were identified as the risk factors for stroke among hypertensive non diabetic individuals while, regular use of statins had protective effect. Obesity, long standing hypertension, raised diastolic BP, use of added salt were the significant risk factors identified by binary logistic regression. Majority of the factors were preventable; hence we need to develop preventive strategies for risk assessment and provide interventions to decrease stroke burden among hypertensives.

Although previous studies had shown that patients with non-gastrointestinal symptoms have osteopenia but there is scanty literature on the effect of GFD on Bone Mass Density (BMD) improvement in celiac disease patients with or without gastrointestinal symptoms in childhood. Methods :A prospective interventional study was conducted in a tertiary care institute in which newly diagnosed children 1 to 14 years of age presented to Pediatrics OPD or admitted in ward with symptoms suggestive of CD and IgA tissue transglutaminase level 10 folds of normal level were taken as cases. Children with other associated diseases like Type 1 Diabetes Mellitus, Hypothyroidism and who were non-compliant to GFD diet were excluded. Those children were later grouped into as children with gastrointestinal and children with non-gastrointestinal symptoms. DEXA scan was done in both the groups at presentation and after 6 months of gluten free diet to determine bone mass density. The results were later compiled and analysed . P value of <0.05 was taken as significant. Results: A total of 50 patients were enrolled in the study in which 25 patients were in each group. In children with gastrointestinal symptoms, 10 (40%) children had osteopenia (Z-score below -1) and 2 patients had severe osteopenia (Z-score below -2.5) where as in other group with non-gastrointestinal symptoms, 11(44%) has osteopenia and 3 had severe osteopenia. After 6 months of GFD there was significant improvement in mean Z-score, mean BMD and mean BMC(p<0.001) in both the groups however complete restoration was not achieved. Conclusions: Our study clearly showed that children without gastrointestinal symptoms had osteopenia of almost same degree as children with these symptoms (p >0.05). There is a significant beneficial effect of GFD on bone mass in both the groups (gastrointestinal as well as non-gastrointestinal) separately. Such results emphasize early detection and role of GFD intreatment of osteopenia in these children to have adequate bone mass in the puberty.
