We propose here a new method to estimate the GCIs based on the Teager energy function (TEF). The technique is simple and has a low computational load. The method is based on the peak detection of the TEF for each frame. A smoothing technique is then implemented to pick the right value for the pitch period. Intensive experimental results showed that the proposed technique outperforms both the autocorrelation and cepstral based techniques.","PeriodicalId":302569,"journal":{"name":"ISSPA '99. The CDT partitions a shape into a set of nonoverlapping triangles which represent the shape's local symmetry properties and interconnecting relationships between branches. The skeleton of the shape is generated from the skeletons of the triangles. Methods for removing skeletonization artefacts are provided. An outstanding feature of the algorithm is that the structural information at intersections of a shape is preserved in its skeleton.","PeriodicalId":302569,"journal":{"name":"ISSPA '99. Although there are many algorithms presently available for solving segmentation tasks, they can be easily misled by the ghost artifacts and blurring in the background of the image. Therefore, a two step background-clearing algorithm is proposed in this paper. The first step involves selection of the least motion-affected views, using an entropy minimization criterion for suppression of motion induced blurs. The second step involves cancellation of the remaining ghost artifacts, using a fuzzy model. Both these steps tend to increase the number of dark pixels in the image. The contour extraction is performed using an improved active contour model (snake). The proposed method has been applied to spin echo MR images affected by rotational motion, producing good results.","PeriodicalId":302569,"journal":{"name":"ISSPA '99. The Hough transform is used to extract the parameterized Hough space from the signature skeleton as a unique characteristic feature of signatures. In the experiment, the backpropagation neural network is used as a tool to evaluate the performance of the proposed method. The system has been tested with 70 test signatures from different persons. The experimental results reveal a recognition rate 95.24%.","PeriodicalId":302569,"journal":{"name":"ISSPA '99. If some sweeps of the radar signal are corrupted by directional interference of an impulsive nature, it is shown that the performance of the block adaptation approach can be improved by the application of median based estimators in selecting the weights for a beam from intermediate sweeps. This paper introduces the method for attenuating impulsive directional interference while avoiding weight jitters.","PeriodicalId":302569,"journal":{"name":"ISSPA '99. A mathematical model of multipath HF interference is developed and an adaptive algorithm based on this model is proposed to estimate the receiver frequency response corrections. The effectiveness of the proposed algorithm is demonstrated and compared against a commonly used adaptive technique and a highly accurate calibration system using experimental data collected by the receiving antenna array of the Jindalee over-the-horizon (OTH) radar.","PeriodicalId":302569,"journal":{"name":"ISSPA '99. {"title":"An analysis of the exponentiated gradient descent algorithm","authors":"S. I. Hill, R. C. Williamson","doi":"10.1109/ISSPA.1999.818191","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ISSPA.1999.818191","url":null,"abstract":"This paper analyses three algorithms previously studied in the computational learning theory community: the gradient descent (GD) algorithm, the exponentiated gradient algorithm with positive and negative weights (EG/spl plusmn/ algorithm) and the exponentiated gradient algorithm with unnormalised positive and negative weights (EGU/spl plusmn/ algorithm). The analysis is of the form used in the signal processing community and is in terms of the mean square error. A relationship between the learning rate and the mean squared error (MSE) of predictions is found for the family of algorithms. Trials involving simulated acoustic echo cancellation are conducted whereby learning rates for the algorithms are selected such that they converge to the same steady state MSE. These trials demonstrate that, in the case that the target is sparse, the EG/spl plusmn/ algorithm typically converges more quickly than the GD or EGU/spl plusmn/ algorithms which perform very similarly.","PeriodicalId":302569,"journal":{"name":"ISSPA '99. Images of the containers are captured from sampled video signals of a camera suspended over the containers. The images are preprocessed for noise removal and enhancement. The resulting images are then processed to estimate the number of prawn larvae with an acceptable accuracy. Our preliminary results show that estimates of prawn larvae numbers with accuracy of between 90-95% are achievable under controlled conditions. Some issues of system development and practical implementation are discussed.","PeriodicalId":302569,"journal":{"name":"ISSPA '99.
