Each node has a limited amount of energy available, because they are powered by batteries. Performing monitoring operations to establish whether a node is fair or not requires a large amount of energy, hence their reduction is desirable when they are not needed. A node behavior could dynamically change over time, because it could be compromised by external agents, or it could have a selfish behavior due to energy saving reasons. Thus, monitoring is needed also when a node behavior is fair in a given period of time. The proposed approach of dynamic monitoring could help in saving energy without affecting the accuracy of the IDS. For this purpose, we introduced a function that changes the probability of monitoring a packet depending on the trustworthiness of the involved agent. The results of this work show that the detection accuracy can be unaltered under some conditions, improving the energy saving.","PeriodicalId":302558,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"170 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-09-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125386384","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Apache Storm is a popular distributed real time stream processing engine which has been widely adopted by key players in the industry including YAHOO and Twitter. An application running in storm is called a topology that is characterized by a Directed Acyclic Graph (DAG). To run multiple of such topologies in a storm cluster, storm provides with default, out of the box scheduler called Isolation Scheduler. Isolation Scheduler assigns resources to topologies based on static resource configuration and does not provide any means to prioritize topologies based on their varying business priority. As a result, performance degradation, even complete starvation of topologies with high business priority is possible when available cluster resources are insufficient. A priority based resource scheduling strategy is proposed in this paper to overcome this problem. A preliminary performance evaluation is performed to demonstrate effectiveness of the proposed scheduler over the default storm Isolation Scheduler.","PeriodicalId":302558,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"28 18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127121618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Towards this direction, we investigate the performance of strategies for the scheduling of fine-grained parallel applications in a SaaS cloud in the presence of transient software failures, which may occur during the execution of the applications. We combine and compare by simulation different techniques that incorporate application-directed checkpointing and approximate computations, in an attempt to: (a) provide resilience against temporary software failures, (b) guarantee that all applications will meet their deadline, (c) provide application results of as high quality as possible and (d) minimize the monetary cost charged to the end-users for the execution of their applications.","PeriodicalId":302558,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126606419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent researches have led to new protocols specifically designed for sensor networks where energy awareness is an essential consideration. Internet of Things (IoT) is an innovative ICT paradigm where a number of intelligent devices connected to Internet are involved in sharing information and making collaborative decision. Integration of sensing and actuation systems, connected to the Internet, means integration of all forms of energy consuming devices such as power outlets, bulbs, air conditioner, etc. Sometimes the system can communicate with the utility supply company and this led to achieve a balance between power generation and energy usage or in general is likely to optimize energy consumption as a whole. In this paper some emerging trends and challenges are identified to enable energy-efficient communications in Internet of Things architectures and between smart devices. The way devices communicate is analyzed in order to reduce energy consumption and prolong system lifetime. Devices equipped with WiFi and RF interfaces are analyzed under different scenarios by setting different communication parameters, such as data size, in order to evaluate the best device configuration and the longest lifetime of devices.","PeriodicalId":302558,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"57 7","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134034236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These new algorithms are tested for virtual machine (VM) placement problem with the objective of minimizing the energy consumption in datacenters, which is an integer space optimization problem. The EFWA algorithm is a relatively recent development in swarm intelligence (SI), and is based on explosion amplitude operator that operates in the continuous space. The 'round' function is used to convert the explosion amplitude value to the nearest integer to operate in integer space. In our IEFWA algorithm design, some domain knowledge of VM placement problem was used. During the spark generation in IEFWA, the explosion amplitude is added to the information-based selected components of the fireworks instead of adding the explosion amplitude into instead of all components. The hybrid IEFWA/BBO algorithm probabilistically chooses the explosion amplitude operator of IEFWA algorithm or the migration operator of BBO algorithm with a user determined probability for the exploitation of good candidate solutions. The VM placement problem is NP-hard, and existing results demonstrate that evolutionary algorithms (EAs) can be useful choice for good-quality solution with reasonable computing resources. We experimentally compare the performance of BBO, EFWA, IEFWA, hybrid IEFWA/BBO and the first fit decreasing (FFD) algorithms. Simulation results demonstrate the two key findings of this study. First, IEFWA algorithm consumes less CPU time as compared to the EFWA algorithm. Second, IEFWA and hybrid IEFWA/BBO algorithms outperform EFWA and BBO algorithms in terms of average energy consumed in datacenters.","PeriodicalId":302558,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123862307","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This makes it challenging for cellular networks operators to provide streaming services with high Quality of Experience (QoE). Here, we propose a novel architecture for improving the QoE of video streaming in cellular networks. The architecture employs Base-Station (BS) -assisted Peerto- Peer (P2P) video streaming in cellular networks. Furthermore, the architecture employs the Dynamic Adaptive Streaming over HTTP (DASH); an adaptive bit rate video streaming technique. We use the Discrete EVent System Specification (DEVS) formalism to build a model for the proposed architecture in an LTE-A network, and use the model to study the performance achieved by the proposed architecture in terms of many video streaming QoE metrics. We also use the model to simulate a conventional DASH video streaming over a cellular network, i.e., without P2P streaming. Simulation results show that the proposed architecture achieves significant improvement in terms of video streaming QoE.","PeriodicalId":302558,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"60 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133549190","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Unlike a number of studies, consensus is achieved in presence of hybrid faults. As the link density among nodes in mobile networks could often be sparse, this study also: 1) enables the nodes to collect more values as they change location, 2) increases the chances for voting that might lead to faster convergence by reducing the required lower bound on the number of values to vote on, and 3) enhances fault tolerance of the consensus algorithm by depending on the local faults encountered rather than the total number of faults in the entire network.","PeriodicalId":302558,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"160 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126740228","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mmWave bands are being vigorously pursued for multiple gigabit data transmission. In this paper, channel models for line-of-sight (LOS) and non-line-ofsight (NLOS) links for specific mmWave frequency bands are presented and then used in the evaluation of green efficiency metrics, maximum achievable capacity, bits/s, and power efficiency, bits/s/Thermal Noise Energy Unit. These efficiency indexes are investigated and illustrated using Monte Carlo simulation as a function of signal to noise ratio, channel model parameters and transmitterreceiver separation distance. The results show that the mmWave bands provide better channel capacity; however, less energy efficiency is achieved.","PeriodicalId":302558,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130138811","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, simulation, analysis and evaluation tools in the literature do not handle this complex design and these heterogeneous components. This paper presents OGSSim (Open and Generic Storage systems Simulation tool): a new simulation tool for such systems. Being generic to all devices technologies and open to diverse management strategies and architecture layouts, it fulfills all the storage systems needs in term of representativeness. Also, it has been validated against real systems, thus its accuracy makes it a useful tool for the conception of future storage systems, the choice of hardware components and the analysis of the adequacy between the applications needs and the management strategies combined with the configuration layout. This validation confirmed only a maximum of 15% of difference between real and simulated execution time. Also, OGSSim execution in a competitive time, just 3.5 sec for common workloads on a large system of 500 disks, makes it a challenging simulation and evaluation tool. Thus, it is the appropriate and accurate tool for modern storage systems conception, evaluation and maintenance.","PeriodicalId":302558,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"48 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130996973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Cooperative behaviour in decentralized mobile agents requires communication among them. However, such communication can have negative consequences for the energy consumption. In this paper, we applied two bio-inspired meta-heuristics for the coordination of mobile robots that need to accomplish some tasks in an unknown area under a energy constraint. We address the issue on how the swarm communicates which the others to resolve some targets disseminated in the area cooperatively in a situation when there is a sudden stop of one or more robots for the battery consumption. The proposed strategies implement different communication approaches. The first employs the sensing communication between the swarm using a pheromone like a recruiting mechanism and the other strategy employs a wireless communication among the swarm. A simulator, that implements the strategies, was developed and the experimental set ups evaluate the quality of the two meta-heuristics considering how good solution is in terms of energy consumption taking into account the number of resolved targets and percentage of explored cells. We compares these two methods with the well-known Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO). Results indicates that the firefly-based strategy usually gives superior performance.","PeriodicalId":302558,"journal":{"name":"2016 International Symposium on Performance Evaluation of Computer and Telecommunication Systems (SPECTS)","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-07-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129269851","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
